HVDC (High-voltage direct current): With new renewable energy projects in the North of Scotland needing to be connected to the National Grid and the electricity transported large distances from areas of Generation to areas of Demand, HVDC (High-voltage direct current) is the most efficient way to do this. SSEN Transmission are working on a significant number of new HVDC schemes deployed in Great Britain over the coming years. Our HVDC Engineering team is central to these projects and we are at the cutting edge of new HVDC Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology, having recently commissioned the Shetland HVDC Link, which completed the Caithness-Moray-Shetland HVDC project, the first Multi-terminal HVDC VSC scheme in the world outside of China. With significant projects to work on in the North of Scotland, including work on our Eastern Green Link projects (planned HVDC links from the East coast of Scotland to Northeast England) as well as a number of embedded links within SSEN Transmissions own Network in the North of Scotland, we are aiming to connect up to 10GW of renewable energy in the North of Scotland to the National Grid. This team are based in Inverness, Glasgow or Perth.

Project Engineering: is a core technical department within SSEN Transmission, at the centre of the transition to Net Zero. You will be trained to work on multimillion pound infrastructure projects covering innovations that will allow us to meet technological challenges. The role

The School of Science and Engineering has a wide range of engineering laboratories and workshops which support teaching in Biomedical, Civil, Mechanical, and Industrial Engineering and Physics.

We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Engineering Technical Manager within our Team. The Engineering Technical Manager is a vital role as part of the School Senior Professional Services Team with responsibility for the provision and delivery of high-quality technical services, laboratory management, and operational support for education, industrial engagement, and research activities within the School.

With responsibility across multiple buildings and supporting multiple academic disciplines they take responsibility for leading the highest standards of technical service to academic staff and students, the role holder will proactively identify ways to improve service to meet day-to-day changing demands in a complex laboratory environment. This post is critical with regards to service delivery across our engineering technical services and will manage operational budgets and resources to meet key strategic objectives for the school.

Your priorities will include:

• Provide leadership and management of a large team of technical staff including on-going coaching, training and mentoring, managing objectives, activities, and critical timelines to ensure efficient service delivery.
• Lead the team to support students undertaking practical work, laboratory practical activities and research projects in Physics and Engineering Disciplines.
• Continually look for ways to streamline engineering technical services and operations to ensure delivery of fit- for-purpose and robust services for staff and students.

Who we're looking for:

• Knowledge and understanding of the key issues facing higher education in Scotland and how they relate to the University.
• Technical expertise in engineering and/or laboratory settings.
• Knowledge of industry standards, good practice, and legislation in relation to managing engineering operations
• Excellent liaison skills, with the ability to manage complex relationships with a wide range of individuals (including senior staff) within the University and externally.
• Leadership ability and versatile interpersonal skills to support and build cohesive teams.

Biomedical Engineering is committed to delivering the next generation of medical diagnostic and treatment technologies and protocols. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees including co-delivery of a large Joint Educational Programme in Biomedical Engineering with North-Eastern University, China.

Research in Biomedical Engineering is focussed through the Centre for Medical Engineering & Technology (CMET). CMET is a joint initiative between the Schools of Science & Engineering, and Medicine. It brings together anatomists, clinicians, engineers, physicists, and surgeons to develop world-leading research and knowledge exchange.

The Professor of Biomedical Engineering will be a key appointment for the School, providing strategic leadership for the discipline. This Chair will take the role of Head of Discipline (three years in the first instance). They will be expected to further strengthen and expand collaboration between Biomedical Engineering and key clinical partners in NHS Tayside and in the School of Medicine. Heads of Discipline in SSEN work alongside the School Executive Group to form the Senior Management Group for the School.

• Provide strategic direction and leadership to solidify Biomedical Engineering as a leader for stakeholder- oriented education, research, and knowledge exchange


• Nurture a student and staff community in which people can thrive, and innovation and excellence can flourish


• Develop existing and foster new relationships with national and international partners


• Deliver an outstanding contribution to research activities at the highest level

Who we're looking for:

• An outstanding track record in research including successful PhD supervision, impactful research outputs of internationally excellent quality, and significant external funding


• Evidence of the successful leadership and organisation of learning and teaching activities across a programme

that provides students with integrated, translational learning experiences

• Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively with others including clinicians with a track record of senior leadership across discipline boundaries
