Your new role
You will be joining a prestigious research group working with some of the leading scientists in the genetics field carrying out research work to identify new approaches to tackle cancer.
Main responsibilities will include:

• Lead innovative research in molecular biology to uncover fundamental mechanisms related to genetic and protein functions in cancer.
• Investigate interactions between modified bases and proteins, focusing on their impact on genome functions like transcription and chromatin organisation.
• Develop new techniques to study the dynamics of modified bases and their binding proteins, utilising chemical and genetic approaches.
• Analyse genetic/genomic and other omics data sets to provide insights and use these to design future experiments.
• Explore genetic targets for synthetic lethality opportunities in cancer.
• Manage your own research projects while collaborating with others, ensuring meticulous record-keeping and resource management.
• Share your findings through presentations and publications, and help to mentor PhD students.

What you'll need to succeed
As well as strong communication and organisational skills, you should have:

• A PhD (or be nearing completion) in molecular biology, biochemistry, cancer genomics, or related fields, or significant equivalent experience
• Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, including RNA/DNA analysis, PCR, protein analysis, and western blotting.
• Advanced cloning skills, with experience in genetic engineering, vector construction, and CRISPR/Cas9 systems.
• Expertise in recombinant protein design and expression, utilising systems like E. coli, along with purification methods such as FPLC and mass spectrometry.
• Familiarity with genomic technologies like ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, and single-cell methods, preferably within oncology research, though this is not essential.

It would be an advantage to have good data analysis skills and experience using programming / scripting languages such as Python and/or R, along with tools like MATLAB and Bioconductor, however training can be provided.

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to join the Institute of Metabolic Science ¿ Metabolic Research Laboratories within the Clinical School at the University of Cambridge.

This role has the specific purpose of increasing the pool of researcher and technologist talent and widening access to a research-rich environment. The post is an 18-month placement and will be structured to support the development and training of highly motivated individuals from undergraduate degrees that offered limited laboratory experience and/or who have been otherwise disadvantaged . Post-holders will obtain bespoke training opportunities within research groups and core facilities. Support will be provided for individuals interested in pursuing a higher degree at the end of the position. Those interested in pursuing technical roles in academia or industry will be offered relevant training and support, including via IMS-MRL networks.

THE ROLE

As Administrative Assistant you will play a vital role in supporting the SCAR community, a vibrant international network of people engaged in or supporting Antarctic research. Your work will be varied, with tasks ranging from general office support and responding to day-to-day queries, to the planning of international meetings and interacting with people within and beyond the Antarctic research community. The successful candidate will be a highly organised individual who works well as part of a small team and is educated to degree level or with equivalent work experience, with a passion to support vital work in an important area of environmental research. There is some scope to adapt the role to the skills and experience of the successful candidate. The role will provide the jobholder with a range of learning and professional development opportunities. There may be some opportunities for international travel.



KEY CRITERIA

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, ability to engage diverse stakeholder groups.

Excellent IT/technical skills and a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office software and video-conferencing such as Zoom.

Highly organised; able to multitask efficiently, and meet tight deadlines whilst maintaining attention to detail.

Experience of working effectively within a team to achieve challenging objectives.

Experience of supporting and organising meetings.

A good first degree or equivalent work experience.

Experience of providing office support to a small team.

Experience with website content management.

Track record of learning and implementing new IT systems and interfaces.

Minute taking, editing and proofreading skills for meetings, document production and online text.

Experience of using task management tools (e.g. Asana).

Experience of ensuring GDPR compliance within an organisation.

Experience of working within a complex and dynamic organisation.

Experience of interacting with academia, particularly within polar or environmental research.

Experience of working in/with the charitable sector.
