As Clinical Coding Audit and Training Manager you will work closely with the Senior Management to ensure clinically coded data is accurate, of high quality and adheres to national clinical coding standards rules and conventions. This will be done by developing a robust departmental audit programme as well as engaging with clinical and care group colleagues to ensure they understand the complexities of the clinical coding process and the national standards by which the department is governed
Working alongside the Senior Management Team, the post holder will be responsible for ensuring the clinically coded data is representative of the activity undertaken by East Kent Hospital University Foundation Trust. This will be achieved through planning and completing regular department wide and individual staff audits. Using their freedom to act, they will develop local clinical coding policies, reviewing pre-existing ones and ensuring the QRGs and other coding guidance as contained on the database is accurate, relevant and does not breach national clinical coding standards, rules and conventions. The Clinical Coding Audit and Training manager will also assist the Senior Managers of Clinical Coding in identifying departmental and individual specific training needs.
The post holder will be an Accredited Clinical Coder and they will be a holder of the NHS England Clinical Coding Auditor qualification as well as possessing experience of leading and managing a clinical coding department or service. Their knowledge base will include an in-depth understanding of Secondary Uses Services (SUS) and Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data and how this is used in external benchmarking to describe the depth of coding between organisations.

Develop clinical coding awareness presentations for non-coders/clinicians, presenting them accordingly at audit days and new consultant induction programmes.
Assist the Senior Management Team with the on-going development and long term planning of the Clinical Coding service, ensuring that national clinical coding standards, rules and conventions are implemented within the agreed timescales.
Lead and motivate the Site Clinical Coding Managers in developing and maintaining robust liaison and communication with a range of care group staff, clinical teams and the Information department, regarding a variety of complex matters and issues to assist with the maintenance of high quality, accurate clinically coded data
Participating in the Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT) initiative, analyse the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data contained within the relevant report for conflicting information or indicators, identifying the potential root cause(s) for any negative trends or where the trust appears to be an outlier against national performance targets.
Participating in the GIRFT initiative, communicate to the various staff disciplines how the trust recording practices regarding main and speciality treatment function codes impact upon HES data.
Assist the Senior Management Team with the motivation and leadership of the trust wide clinical coding team in the production of high quality clinically coded data.
Assist the Senior Management Team in the identification of areas for audit.
Using specialist clinical coding knowledge, act as the professional link to the Care Groups through the provision of clinical coding reports as part of their performance management arrangements. Communicating the depth of coding versus benchmark for each specialty in the group and assisting them to agree data quality and clinical coding improvement plans.
