The Optical Design Engineer will take ownership of designing integrated photonic components such as optical passives (waveguides, MMIs, couplers) for high performance interconnect. Responsibilities of this role include performing extensive simulations, design of experiments (DOE), layout of test patterns, collection of test data or close coordination with test team, and statistical data analysis, all with a focus on innovation and accelerated time to market.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the design and optimization of integrated photonic components.
- Simulate photonic components using finite difference, mode solvers and finite element tools.
- Perform Design of Experiments (DOE) and tape-out and measure test patterns.
- Analyze test data and match measurements with simulations.
- Derive predictive compact models that can be used in photonic circuit simulations.
- Optimize components towards process variation (Design for Manufacturability) by utilizing statistical tools, measurements and Monte Carlo analysis.
Functional Knowledge
- Abundant experience on integrated photonics design and simulation.
- Hand-on experience performing FDTD and other numerical simulation tools.
- Deep understanding of the working principles integrated photonic components.
- Desire to deliver innovative products to market.
- Ability to solve problems in new and/or ambiguous scenarios.
- Experience in formalized DOE and statistical analysis such as JMP is a plus
- The candidate should have excellent communication and presentation skills
Business Expertise
- Has knowledge of best practices and how own area integrates with others; is aware of the competition and the factors that differentiate them in the market
Leadership
- Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience; may lead small projects with manageable risks and resource requirements
Problem Solving
- Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective on existing solutions; exercises judgment based on the analysis of multiple sources of information
Impact
- Impacts a range of customer, operational, project or service activities within own team and other related teams; works within broad guidelines and policies
Interpersonal Skills
- Explains difficult or sensitive information; works to build consensus
