The Applied Legal and Compliance Organization (LCO) environment offers a fast-paced, challenging, collegial and collaborative environment. Reporting to LCO’s Patent & IP Portfolio Management Group, this role will have the primary responsibility to support product groups, interact with business and technology management, and advising its leadership team on various IP related matters (patents, IP transactions, etc.). Applied is seeking an energetic team player able to provide counsel on a wide variety of IP issues.
Key Responsibilities:
- Counsel management and technologists of client groups on IP matters involving patents, trade secrets, trademarks and copyrights, and IP transactions
- Analyze IP landscapes, perform IP risk assessments and develop IP sustainability strategies
- Actively develop and manage a global patent portfolio (including patent budget management) to protect key differentiating aspects of Applied’s technologies, including managing outside counsel on patent drafting and prosecution, improving quality, scope and breadth of patent applications & claims, and tracking patent budget and spending
- Collaborate with Litigation team regarding IP procurement and enforcement strategies
- Develop programs to protect IP and accomplish business goals including providing training to management and engineering teams
- Lead and contribute to the development of business processes and policies to better enable achievement of business objectives, mitigate risk, reduce inefficiencies and improve effectiveness
Basic Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate (JD) from accredited law school
- Bar Admissions: U.S. (CA or other state) and USPTO Registration Numbers
- B.S. in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Chemistry or Materials Science
- 7+ years of legal experience in law firm and/or in-house legal departments with a focus in the following areas:
- Patent portfolio development and management in the US and internationally
- Experience in drafting and negotiating agreements involving IP provisions, including licensing, collaboration, research and similar agreements preferred
- Knowledge of IP law, practice, and/or filing strategies in Asian countries, including China, Korea and Taiwan preferred
- Experience related to IP enforcement and litigation, including claim construction, patent invalidity, infringement and damages preferred
- Familiar with global patent operations (e.g., patent administrations, billings, docketing practices, etc.) also preferred

U.S. Salary Range:
$200,000.00 - $275,000.00
The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.
For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
