There is a post available for a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine with or without additional sessions in a related specialty at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team of Intensivists and be involved with the re-development and expansion of a successful and thriving Critical Care Department.

The successful applicant will join the Critical Care team of 16 consultants. The Trust provides critical care services on two sites: Stoke Mandeville Hospital [12 beds] and Wycombe Hospital [6 funded beds, with infrastructure for 8 beds] and a Critical Care Outreach service at both Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe hospital sites, servicing a population of 0.5 million with 900 admissions across both sites annually.

Organisationally, the critical care department sits within the Anaesthetic and Critical Care Service Delivery Unit (SDU). The intensivists have anaesthetic or emergency medicine sessional commitments. The department would be able to accommodate consultants from other appropriate allied specialties within the Intensive Care Unit. There are also options available for a single-CCT intensivist with specifics depending on the interests of the applicant. Out-of-hours activity would be in Intensive Care for this post, with full participation in the ICU on-call rota.

Relocation Support would be considered as per the Trust’s policy.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic and dedicated Intensive Care Consultant to join a team of intensivists within the department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care. The successful candidate will take part full-time in the Critical Care on-call rota at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Wycombe Hospitals. The post comprises Critical Care cover as detailed in the description above and job plan below. If the allied specialty is anaesthetics, there will typically be 2-4 anaesthetic sessions in the non-Critical Care weeks. For other allied specialties, the make-up of non-Critical Care weeks will be negotiated with the respective SDU leads.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Home First Therapy team in Buckinghamshire.

The team is still in its infancy of becoming a substantive service and this provides team members with the opportunity to influence and contribute to growing and shaping the service.

We are looking for motivated and skilled individuals to join the team, which supports patients that have recently been discharged from hospital, to regain their independence and remain in their own homes.

The ideal candidate will be able to take a holistic and person centred approach to supporting patients to recover from their recent hospital admission, and to achieve their short term goals, maximising independence.

The role will include working with other Advanced Therapists in the team to effectively manage a complex caseload and see patients within the expected timescales. Additionally, the successful candidate will be required to support, teach and supervise Therapy staff within the team, to ensure that high standards and efficiency are consistently maintained.

To be responsible for jointly leading and developing the Home First Therapy team, in regard to all aspects of clinical governance within this specialty.To perform specialised assessment and treatment for patients with highly complex presentations and needs, and to provide expert advice, guidance and information to health and social care professionals, carers, relatives and others.

To undertake all aspects of clinical responsibilities as a skilled, autonomous and advanced practitioner.

To actively lead development of professional and service initiatives, and contribute to organisational objectives.

To supervise, teach and appraise Therapy staff and students within the specialty.

To support the Lead Clinician and Junior Doctors through the provision of administration and ensure that patients’ admission, inpatient stay and discharge run in a smooth and timely manner. This will also include assistance with running of acute daily review clinics and emergency theatres, depending on ward base.

To be aware of the processes involved in the running of the surgical (Adult Surgical Floor, Orthopaedic Wards and Emergency Theatres) and medical wards and to support the wards with provision of administration and any required clinical input to ensure there are no delays in patient care.

The range of duties that the post holder will be expected to undertake will be varied and will depend upon the priorities for the department at the start of each working day due to the nature of the acute/ambulatory role. The post holders will be assigned duties by the team and will be trained in the appropriate skill-set in this highly valuable role.

Please note this role will be part of a 7 day working week rotation so there will be work at weekends and/or in the evenings as required. There may possibly be cross-working at other sites within the trust, if required, to cover annual and sickness leave. The post holder will be provided with adequate notice of rota plans.

An opportunity has arisen for a Medical Support Worker to support the clinical team within the surgical division. We are looking for a motivated individual to join the team on a permanent contract.

This posts will be part of a 7 day working rota to cover weekday and weekend activity and may require cross site working. This post will be based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Medical Support Workers are health care professionals who do not necessarily have nursing or medical training. Their main role is to assist the junior doctors with ward administration and training will be provided for taking blood and cannulation to support clinical elements of the role.

Applicants must have organisational skills and time management. Ideally, they will have some NHS experience, but this is not essential. The Trust will provide relevant training and development opportunities.

Applications are invited to apply for a full-time Critical Care Echocardiology Fellow appointment in the Intensive Care Units based at Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy, dynamic intensive care department in a role designed to develop skills in critical care echocardiography. The Critical Care Echo Fellowship is a fixed term year-long post for experienced doctors who have made a career commitment to intensive care medicine who have a strong interest in echocardiography. The Fellowship includes one half-day session per week of dedicated time for echocardiography, and support to achieve the British Society of Echocardiography Level 1 Accreditation. The echo training will be supervised by a fully BSE accredited Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia. The appointee will also have access to a dedicated Butterfly IQ portable ultrasound device for the duration of the fellowship.

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is a split site NHS Trust which provides critical care services at High Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals. The successful applicants will be expected to work at both sites. Maintaining full ALS certification is a mandatory requirement. Certification in ATLS and APLS would be advantageous given the case mix.

Applicants must be GMC Registered with Licence to practice in the UK.

The successful candidate will be expected to display a high degree of self-motivation, professionalism and integrity and should be able to provide critical care to a high degree of skill commensurate with a registrar in ICM. They would work clinically under the day-to-day supervision of the duty ICU Consultant.

The critical care department holds regular ICM teaching sessions, in-situ simulation sessions, MDT meetings, clinical governance meetings, journal club and other activities supporting clinical care and training. There is a rich audit and quality improvement program, and the department is participating in a number of NIHR-portfolio research studies. The Fellow will be encouraged and supported to be involved in these additional activities.

The Fellow will be expected to contribute to the teaching and supervision of less experienced colleagues. Once the Fellow’s personal echocardiography skills have developed sufficiently, they will be supported to become FICE mentors to enhance the echo training provided to other critical care healthcare professionals.

The post would be suitable for a single-CCT ICM trainee in Stage 2 training as part of a Special Skills Year subject to prospective approval from local TPD or as a post-CCT fellowship. Applications would also be welcomed from dual or joint ICM trainees as part of OOPE/OOPT and from equivalently experienced Trust or SAS doctors who can demonstrate a career interest and regular sessional commitment to ICM. In addition, the Fellowship would also be suitable for applicants who have already completed one year of echocardiography training elsewhere and need a second year of training for completion of ACCE or full BSE accreditation.

The department will also try and meet the needs of individual candidates with an additional specialty interest (e.g. anaesthetics) to maintain and develop knowledge, skills and experience in that specialty. Please contact us to discuss options.
