Breast Surgery Department Churchill Hospital Job Description JOB TITLE: Nursing Assistant (Clinical Support Worker) GRADE: Band 3 DEPARTMENT: Hours RESPONSIBLE TO: Breast Surgery 37.5 hrs Advanced Nurse Practitioners ACCOUNTABLE TO: Advanced Nurse Practitioners OVERALL OBJECTIVES: As a member of the nursing team, you will assist registered members of staff to deliver a high standard of care to patients in the ward/clinical area demonstrating compassion, kindness and sensitivity. Work as an integral part of the OPD team and be responsible for day to day running of outpatient clinics Manage and maintain the online booking system for the clinic rooms within the outpatient setting. Provide high quality and safe care to patients attending OPD. Be alert to frail patients and provide refreshments, pressure relieving aids and/or assistance to toilet. To maintain the dignity and privacy of all patients and respect their right to confidentiality at all times. To complete and maintain on an ongoing basis a portfolio of clinical competencies. To review progress with ward manager and team leader/supervisor at regular intervals and through appraisal process. Undertake action required in emergencies as directed by trained nurses Maintain a safe, well stocked, clean and comfortable environment for patients, staff and visitors. KEY RESPONSIBILITES: You will undertake the following duties under the supervision of a registered practitioner. Communication: To establish and maintain good relationships with patients, relatives and colleagues through effective verbal and non-verbal communication, demonstrating empathy and ability to manage conflict or potentially challenging situations. To help patients and visitors orientate themselves to their surroundings when in the outpatient department, tailored to their specific needs. To answer telephone calls appropriately and efficiently, accurately relaying messages. Contact patients and visitors and instruct them on attending the department following COVID 19 guidance Have a good understanding of IT systems. Undertake agreed aspects of clerical work relating to patients and the outpatient department including gathering and filing notes. Clinical: Establish a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere and environment, for patients, visitors and staff alike. Be aware of which patients are on hospital transport, co-ordinate their OPA & return transport home as required. Ensure they have necessary refreshments and assistance to toilet if required. Be alert to frail patients or those who are attending for several hours, provide refreshments, pressure relieving aids and/or assistance to toilet. Chaperone patients when required. Assist colleagues in the moving/handling of patients as appropriate. Report all occurrences promptly which require the attention of a trained nurse. Undertake action required in emergencies as directed by a trained nurse. When required, assist nursing team in transfer of patient or accompany a patient to another department within the hospital or to another hospital. Prepare patients and their environment for clinical procedures. Promote anti-discriminatory practise, ensure patient confidentiality, privacy and dignity at all times. Support the patients rights, choice and personal beliefs. General Duties: Ensure equipment is cleaned as per Trust policies (beds, chairs, tables, pumps, trolleys, blood pressure monitors, thermometers, ophthalmoscope, ECG trolley, computer keyboards, weighing scales, etc). Ensure all equipment is present (maintain equipment log) and in working order, that any broken equipment is removed from use, cleaned, tagged and sent for repair, as per Trust policy. Ensure required stocks are ordered as required. Check deliveries against invoices and store in a tidy and accessible way. Store equipment in a tidy and accessible way Demonstrate an awareness of Health and safety regulations that apply to staff and patients in the clinical area and compliance with the procedures. Record and Report appropriately untoward incidents such as complaints or clinical emergencies as detailed in department and Trust protocols and procedures. Quality and Service Development: To undertake annual training as required via face-to-face teaching or e learning. To assist in maintaining a safe working environment for patients, visitors and colleagues To adhere to all Trust and Directorate policies being aware of specific policies and risk assessments carried out in the clinical area and to escalate concerns. To support all monitoring of quality initiatives and evaluations within the clinical area e.g friends and family test. To be familiar with the local quality standards of the ward/unit and how it fits in and contributes to the organisation and its core values. To report all accidents, incidents and areas of concern to senior staff ensuring relevant documentation is completed To have knowledge of the procedure for calling for emergency assistance following cardiac arrest or patient emergency. To ensure all faulty equipment is taken out of service, cleaned appropriately, labelled correctly and sent for repair. Ensure all equipment is cleaned correctly (according to hospital policy) and stored appropriately. Patient Confidentiality: All care to be taken to maintain patient confidentiality at all times. • Band 3 Laboratory Support Workers will have had previous experience of working in an NHS diagnostic laboratory.

You will support Healthcare Scientific staff by maintaining analytical equipment, producing chemical reagents and preparing biological specimens for analysis. You will help to meet quality standards necessary for accreditation, and ensure that protocols are followed in a way that maintains Health, Safety and Information Security for individuals, the Department and the Trust.

You will have a positive, professional approach to patient care and be keen to work as part of a busy, highly skilled team. Previous experience within a diagnostic laboratory is essential for this post.

To effectively plan and organise own time, patient caseload, meetings, training and be able to adjust plans as required according to staffing levels and unpredictable factors. To assist in the planning of junior staff, students and assistant timetables and deputise for senior staff in organisational duties. Education and training To organise and contribute to the teams training and post-registration education programme. To contribute to the education of multidisciplinary groups, patients, families, and carers as appropriate. To be responsible for individual undergraduate student physiotherapists supervision and practice-based learning. To adopt a proactive approach in learning from others within, and outside of the physiotherapy profession. Research and development To actively participate in the departments quality improvement and clinical audit programme through the completion of authorised projects. To ensure good working knowledge and application of national and local clinical standards. Effort To be able to undertake episodes of moderate physical effort for several short periods during a shift. This broad spectrum of patients provides you with the opportunity to build a wide range of skills and knowledge upon which to construct your health career, whilst working within a nationally recognised centre for management of complex colorectal diseases.
