Job Description for Senior Research Technologist:

A Senior Research Technologist (4A) with an extensive and diverse range of experience is required for the planning, execution, and supervision of experimental programmes performed under the Thermal Treatment R&D Portfolio, the Waste Vitrification Process Support portfolio, and on any associated wasteform development projects including those under the thermal core science theme. Chiefly the role involves developing experimental programmes to customer specification, acting as an authority on plant/experimental capabilities and suggesting additional work to the customer which may be of benefit to their operations. The role involves supervisory responsibility for junior Technologists working in these project areas in terms of technical safety and quality.
The role also involves contributing to the technical standards and skills development across NNL, such as engagement with companywide improvement programmes, involvement with the appropriate professional body and playing a direct active role in the supervision, coaching and development of supporting staff and new team members as well as acting as a champion for safety and technical quality.
The role may also involve the requirement to provide embedded support to external organisations such as customers, partners, and collaborator for a fixed period of time.
Main Responsibilities for Senior Research Technologist:
- Interfacing directly with customers and supporting them in identifying knowledge gaps and areas for further research.
- Development of experimental programmes to support the customer in achieving their waste management and disposal objectives.
- Fulfilling the role of Technical Lead to derive experiments aimed at investigating key research tasks.
- Specification, execution, and delivery of research projects including supervision of supporting team members.
- Identification of experimental analysis requirements and organising both internal analyses carried out by NNL, and external analysis carried out by the supply chain when necessary.
- Consulting with Operations and Laboratory Teams, ensuring that the aims and objectives of experiments are successfully being achieved.
- Performing on-line analysis of plant and laboratory produced data.
- Undertaking safety and quality audits on plant and in the laboratories.
- Investigation of experimental events occurring during rig or laboratory operations and conduct quick-time analysis, making changes where necessary.
- Collection of relevant data from rig and laboratory software systems and ensuring that QA aspects of data collection and retention from all projects are robust.
- Interpretation of results / data and production of technical reports.
- Presentation of results to the wider business area team and customers through Technical Committee meetings.
- Identification and recommendation of areas of future work for the business area.
Essential Criteria for Senior Research Technologist:
- Minimum Undergraduate degree in a relevant scientific subject; Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, etc.
- Experience in a technical capacity, ideally at lead or deputy lead level.
- Proven ability in experimental design, management, and reporting.
- Demonstrable customer focus with the ability to interact at all levels.
- Proven ability to analyse data, specifically data produced by plant trending software.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively and be a respected team member.
- Demonstrable positive attitude towards achieving high levels of safety and quality.
- Highly competent in Microsoft IT packages.
- Proven ability to interact with other departments and at higher level in, and outside of, own team.
- Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years' worth of UK residency).
Desirable Criteria for Senior Research Technologist:
- Master's degree or PhD in a relevant scientific subject; Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, etc.
- Technical knowledge and understanding of the HIP programme, VTR programme, glass and ceramic waste forms, and thermal treatment technologies.
