The Senior HVDC Plant Engineer will have experience working on the Transmission Network and an extensive knowledge of HVDC covering System Design, Main Plant Apparatus, and Insulation Co-ordination design.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

- Review or approve the technical requirements of HVDC system design and primary plant and equipment and liaise with control and protection team to ensure that secondary design is well coordinated.

- Provide HVDC and AC Substation technical support on high profile projects or technically complex issues.

- Take technical ownership of engagement with Technical Authority to manage specification deviations and to capture lessons learned and future specification improvements.

- Work within a multi-discipline team, utilising Autodesk Construction Cloud BIM environment to manage and co-ordinate designs, raise and respond to contractor RFI/TQs, clash detection, 3D model development etc.

SSEN Transmission has an opportunity for a Civils Principal Engineer to join our Policy & Standards Team.

The Policy and Standards Team are part of the Asset Management and Operations Directorate and are the Design and Technical Engineering Governance function for the Transmission Business. Their purpose is to ensure that suitable engineering guidance and specifications are in place for all Transmission projects and relevant business areas and that the design of the network and the equipment used ensures we operate safely, reliably and in compliance with the relevant legislation.

As the Principal Engineer - Civils, you will;

- Write, maintain and own technical specifications required for civil works associated with substation, e.g. substation buildings, bunds, trenches, etc. and review existing specifications and update them based on lessons learnt from projects.

- Represent Transmission at industry body events such as ENA or CIGRE working groups and attend conferences, participate in supplier meetings, TO forums, etc. and lead on introduction of new technology for substation construction.

- As part of the Technical Authority review perform approval of civil aspects with regard to standardised substation construction.

- Provide technical guidance and advice to Project Engineering for scope of works, specification and supplier selection, to Asset Management regarding civil asset condition and to Operations regarding civil capability.

- Provide Subject Matter Expert input to design reviews carried out by the Design Authority to verify project proposals are fit for purpose.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- A degree in Civil Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline and Chartered Engineer status with a relevant institution or working towards chartered status.

- Demonstrable experience on an expert level in the design, specification, construction, operation and maintenance of civil infrastructure, preferably related to the energy sector.

- The ability to technically assess issues and/or problems and critically assess a range of technical solutions and a detailed knowledge and understanding of a range of British and European Standards related to civil infrastructure.

- Strong organisation and project management skills as well as interpersonal skills as the role interacts across broad areas of the business and at multiple levels.

- Experience in design and construction of mechanical services in substations would also be advantageous.

HVDC (High-voltage direct current): With new renewable energy projects in the North of Scotland needing to be connected to the National Grid and the electricity transported large distances from areas of Generation to areas of Demand, HVDC (High-voltage direct current) is the most efficient way to do this. SSEN Transmission are working on a significant number of new HVDC schemes deployed in Great Britain over the coming years. Our HVDC Engineering team is central to these projects and we are at the cutting edge of new HVDC Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology, having recently commissioned the Shetland HVDC Link, which completed the Caithness-Moray-Shetland HVDC project, the first Multi-terminal HVDC VSC scheme in the world outside of China. With significant projects to work on in the North of Scotland, including work on our Eastern Green Link projects (planned HVDC links from the East coast of Scotland to Northeast England) as well as a number of embedded links within SSEN Transmissions own Network in the North of Scotland, we are aiming to connect up to 10GW of renewable energy in the North of Scotland to the National Grid. This team are based in Inverness, Glasgow or Perth.

Project Engineering: is a core technical department within SSEN Transmission, at the centre of the transition to Net Zero. You will be trained to work on multimillion pound infrastructure projects covering innovations that will allow us to meet technological challenges. This team are based in Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen or Inverness.

What do I need to join?

To be considered for the role, you will be studying a degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (or a mix of these disciplines).

This role would sit in within the HVDC Engineering Team, and although direct HVDC experience would be desirable it is not necessary. We encourage candidates with a project engineering background, ideally with an electrical engineering background in either construction, consultancy, or client organisations within the Energy Industry to apply. The key duties and responsibilities of this role will be:

- You will assist in defining the basis of project design and scope. You will be involved in the full project life cycle, from project definition, preparing and evaluating tenders, conceptual and front end design development, detail design reviews HAZID/HAZCON/HAZOP sessions through into supporting construction, installation supervision and commissioning.

- You will assist with reviewing contractor designs ensuring they comply with specifications. Apply basic knowledge of commonly used electrical concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the Transmission & HVDC industry.

- You will support site works with regular site visits during construction, installation and commissioning phases of a live HVDC project.

- You'll promote and manage safety within your assigned projects through the implementation of CDM procedures and practices, ensuring the project engineering is compliant with company, HSE and industry regulations.

- You will support the engineering delivery on your assigned projects, of a typical capital value of £50m - £1000m. Working closely with Engineers, Engineering Managers, Lead Project Managers and Project Managers you'll ensure that Engineering and Quality risks are identified and mitigated with projects being successfully delivered.

We have an exciting opportunity for a SCADA Asset Engineer to join our team. As a SCADA Asset Engineer you will assess, understand and predict the performance, integrity and condition of transmission SCADA assets and enable timely interventions to maintain overall network reliability. This role offers the successful candidate a unique opportunity to become involved in the full life cycle from conception to decommissioning of large infrastructure. - Working closely with the Project Delivery and Operational Teams, you will deliver value and contribute to the overall operational excellence of the business. - Provide a continuous overview and review of all applied SCADA Assets taking account of dynamic changes to the system from new connections and embedded generation and maintain/update asset/settings database.

What do I need?

- Significant experience in asset management influencing design, construction or operation & maintenance of SCADA and communications, ideally educated to degree level in a relevant Engineering subject, although for this role we consider experience more important than qualification.

- You have worked within multi-discipline environments and have experience of development and reviews of RTS/SCADA and control design at all Transmission voltage levels.

- Experience in fault analysis and post fault investigative studies and reporting.
