What We Offer
The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The full salary range for this position is $174,899 - $297,328/year. However, our target hiring range is between $190,000 - $240,000/year commensurate with education and experience.

Location
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days. In this position you can expect to work on site at the Wellington Webb Building or at our Wastewater Building at least three days a week.
What You’ll Do
DOTI has an opening for the Chief (City) Engineer. This executive level management position will be responsible for providing visionary leadership for the City transportation and city infrastructure business lines, the delivery of effective and efficient customer-focused services, and the execution of business strategies with a focus on continuous improvement and data-driven results. The City Engineer will direct multiple engineering and planning related divisions for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) including establishing a multi-year vision and strategic plan for the business lines, optimizing resource allocation, and ensuring the organization accomplishes annual goals and strategic initiatives.
Additional responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:
- Providing leadership and direction to Directors, Managers, and staff members to ensure continued development and management of an efficient organization
- Creating and implementing agency-wide frameworks, structures, systems, and processes to support the delivery and execution of DOTI goals and initiatives
- Providing technical engineering expertise and partnership to other departments, elected and appointed officials, other governmental jurisdictions, and consultants in the planning and execution of DOTI system improvements, programs, projects, and other engineering matters
- Collaborating and garnering support for DOTI and citywide programs, projects, and goals for current and future concerns and regulatory compliance
- Reviewing and recommending grant writing strategies to leverage city dollars for system improvements in coordination with other governmental agencies and/or private partners
- Performing other related duties as assigned
About You
What You’ll Bring
You are a visionary who possesses demonstrated leadership experience as an Engineer on large, complex, multidisciplinary design and construction projects. You are a well-rounded Engineering professional with the highest professional ethics, robust leadership skills, and a passion for solving complex programmatic issues.
Additionally, you will possess:
- Prior experience as Director or senior level executive with a background managing large teams focused in horizontal or vertical construction programs
- Experience working with major public infrastructure agencies and projects, prior municipal experience as a city engineer or city traffic engineer is a plus
- Preferred experience with complex portfolio or program management including financial strategy and budgeting of local, state and federal funding sources
- Preferred ten (10) years of supervisory experience
- Preferred significant experience managing complex internal and external stakeholders including elected officials, other department heads, industry organizations, public entities
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Education requirement: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
- Experience Requirement: Five (5) years of experience at the type and level of Engineer/Architect Director
- Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements
- Licensure: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application. Or requires registration as an Architect by the Colorado State Board of Registration at the time of application. Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation.
