HVDC (High-voltage direct current): With new renewable energy projects in the North of Scotland needing to be connected to the National Grid and the electricity transported large distances from areas of Generation to areas of Demand, HVDC (High-voltage direct current) is the most efficient way to do this. SSEN Transmission are working on a significant number of new HVDC schemes deployed in Great Britain over the coming years. Our HVDC Engineering team is central to these projects and we are at the cutting edge of new HVDC Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology, having recently commissioned the Shetland HVDC Link, which completed the Caithness-Moray-Shetland HVDC project, the first Multi-terminal HVDC VSC scheme in the world outside of China. With significant projects to work on in the North of Scotland, including work on our Eastern Green Link projects (planned HVDC links from the East coast of Scotland to Northeast England) as well as a number of embedded links within SSEN Transmissions own Network in the North of Scotland, we are aiming to connect up to 10GW of renewable energy in the North of Scotland to the National Grid. Project Engineering: is a core technical department within SSEN Transmission, at the centre of the transition to Net Zero. This is an exciting opportunity for a driven Software Engineer or Controls Engineer to directly influence and shape their product through new projects. The successful candidate will be directly involved in the specification and application, controlling the automation and interface of the company's machinery. They are looking for a highly experienced and knowledgeable Software Engineer who can join their Development & Engineering team, and add their knowledge and creativity to a world-class manufacturer.

The Software Engineer will be responsible for creating, managing and updating machine software applications, seeing a project through from Inception to Delivery, contributing to the full product life cycle.
You will work seamlessly with the Development Department, Process Engineering and Manufacturing, and be expected to play a lead role in all software development activities.
Your responsibilities will include:

• Development of software for automation and control of machinery.
• Support on site manufacturing and laboratory facilities.
• Interacting with customers during design and after sales support.
• Work closely with Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
• Actively working with all departments to identify problems and develop solutions to maximise quality.
• Maintain / continuously improve current product line.
• Generation of supporting documentation, e.g. BoMs / Reports / User Guides.

We're looking for someone who has/is:

• Degree educated (or with equivalent experience) in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics or similar.
• Extensive experience using LabVIEW.
• Windows IoT experience.
• Advanced knowledge of hardware integration and industrial communication (EtherCAT, TwinCAT and/or CANopen preferred).

Additional Skills that would benefit the role:

• Experience with PLCs, stepper motors, variable frequency drives.
• Knowledge of other programming languages such as C, C#, C++ or Python.
• Knowledge of EU directives and CE Marking.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Role
