What is the Role?

Our Transmission Engineering summer placements provides real hands-on experience through a 12 week placement in one of our engineering based teams. Throughout the placement, you will have the support of a business mentor and buddy, who will provide guidance and support to enable you to reach your full potential.

About our Teams

HVDC Centre: We are looking for Electrical Power Engineering students to support the power system studies to de-risk the deployment of High Voltage Direct Current transmission technologies to deliver our net-zero targets. Over the next decade, the electricity transmission network that we operate will be dramatically reshaped by HVDC to integrate massive offshore wind power to achieve net-zero. Our team of power system experts are key to enabling and de-risking this journey. We are seeking students studying electrical power engineering. This team are based in Cumbernauld.

Project Engineering: A core technical department within SSEN Transmission. Our summer placement programme will provide you with experience of working at the centre of the transition to Net Zero. You will receive training to work on multimillion pound infrastructure projects covering innovations that will allow us to meet these technological challenges. We are looking for students studying electrical, mechanical or civil engineering. This team are based in Inverness, Perth or Glasgow.

HVDC Engineering: With new renewable energy projects in the North of Scotland needing to be connected to the National Grid and the electricity transported large distances from areas of Generation to areas of Demand, HVDC is the most efficient way to do this. Our HVDC Engineering team is central to these projects and we are at the cutting edge of new HVDC Voltage Source Converter technology, having recently commissioned the Shetland HVDC Link, which completed the Caithness-Moray-Shetland HVDC project, the first Multi-terminal HVDC VSC scheme in the world outside of China. With significant projects to work on in the North of Scotland, including work on our Eastern Green Link projects (planned HVDC links from the East coast of Scotland to Northeast England) as well as a number of embedded links within SSEN Transmissions own Network in the North of Scotland, we are aiming to connect up to 10GW of renewable energy in the North of Scotland to the National Grid. This team are based in Inverness, Glasgow, Aberdeen or Perth.

Marine Engineering: A relatively new function within SSEN Transmission, established just over 2 years ago, to be ready, and indeed be a major part of the "Net Zero" race in the UK. We have an increasing portfolio of substantial Marine Installation projects for at least the next 10 years, including the installation of critical national infrastructure and its on-going protection. The team is building the capacity for "best in class" offshore cable installation projects, putting a team together to manage all aspects of marine delivery, Safety, Logistics, Vessel Assurance, and Survey support throughout the lifetime of the marine infrastructures lifespan. We are looking for students studying geosciences, construction management or logistics management. This team are based in Aberdeen or Glasgow.

Are you ready to play a crucial role in safeguarding some of the most important assets across Scotland? As a Security Systems Service Engineer at SSE, youll be at the heart of maintaining and securing SSE infrastructure, ensuring the safety and operational continuity of SSE sites. Utilising your knowledge of security technology, youll travel across mainland Scotland and the islands, solving problems and keeping the system running smoothly. This role includes standby engineering duties across the Scottish region, so you'll need to be flexible and ready to support these arrangements. - Carrying out routine maintenance and responding to security system issues at SSE sites within your designated area, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

- Identifying and troubleshoot both minor and major faults in security systems, contributing to upgrade projects where necessary.

What do I need?

As an Operational Electrical Engineer working in the Offshore Wind team, you'll be responsible for providing technical knowledge required to manage the integrity and availability of operational assets, where failure would have a major impact on safety, environmental and commercial operation of the business.

- Acting as first line support to the Operations and Engineering teams, developing proactive and corrective maintenance plans for a range of HV and LV systems.

- Maintaining a clear technical record of the condition and status of wind farm electrical components, taking a proactive approach to maintain asset integrity.

What do I need?

- Operational experience working as a Senior Authorised Person at 33kV or 66kV or working towards this is preferred however training can be provided as part of potential development in the role.

Mechanical Services Engineer

The Role:

Property & Facilities Management (P&FM) has a vacancy for an experienced Mechanical Services Engineer within its Engineering team.

Reporting to the Principal Mechanical Engineer and Engineering Manager within the P&FM service, you will provide a full range of technical and professional duties associated with mechanical building services, including the preparation of design solutions, technical drawings and associated information.

Projects will include new build major capital projects, such as schools, housing, offices, and depots, as well as extensions, alterations and refurbishments within existing local authority properties. This post will provide an exciting opportunity for applicants with a range of experience, and relevant training can be provided where necessary.

P&FM delivers BIM L2 compliant projects and knowledge of this process, and the associated software packages such as Revit, Stabicad and IES may be an advantage.

This role also provides a service providing technical and practical advice to other P&FM disciplines, client departments, Elected Members, and external clients.

SSEN Distribution's subsea cable team is a key part of its operations in the north of Scotland - responsible for monitoring the submarine cable network that provides power supplies from the mainland to 60 Scottish Islands, including the Inner and Outer Hebrides, Arran and the Orkney Islands

Reporting to the Lead Submarine Cable Design Engineer and relevant Project Managers, you will support the delivery of engineering elements of the projects from the preliminary route identification through to the development of the detailed design and cable installation and commissioning.

With a priority on safety and the environment, you will have technical and design responsibilities within:

- Submarine Cable procurement and Submarine Cable route design, including desktop feasibility study, cable burial risk assessment, on bottom stability analysis and UXO risk assessment.

- Preparing pre-construction information and scopes for all aspects of the works in line with SSEN's specification and industry best standard.

- Managing technical aspects of contractors, from delivering survey data, to report generation, through to cable installation.

- Technical support to the wider subsea team, procurement and commercial, environmental and consents.

- Internal design governance processes, including design management and design risk.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- Experience of submarine power cable landfall assessments, route engineering, design analysis and specifying methods of cable installation, burial and protection, based on marine survey data and experience of route engineering design with GIS and drawing packages.

- Knowledge of submarine power cable installation, both in deep and shallow waters, and aspects that may affect the cable integrity during installation and operation. 

- Experience of preparing and managing tender packages for submarine power cable works, including installation and marine surveys.

- Experience in considering stakeholder views within the design development and experience of onshore cable route assessment for subsequent connection of the submarine cable to the distribution network is desirable

- Applicable Engineering degree qualified or equivalent experience.

A full driving licence is required for this role.

What is the Role?

As an Electrical Networks Design Engineer, you will primarily be responsible for technical development of capital projects for our distribution network, from feasibility through to approved for construction stage, using a suite of engineering standards. Project designs relate to underground cable, overhead line and substation situations up to 33kV. The project portfolio includes network refurbishment, reinforcement or automation and plant replacement.

Your design duties will include:

-Production of line route drawings, stage by stage plans, plant and equipment specifications, contractor tendering and evaluation.

-Liaise with internal colleagues and external stakeholders to ensure that necessary project land rights can be consented, construction carried out robustly, cost effectively and be technically compliant.

-You will also be required to plan, manage, monitor and coordinate the health, safety and environmental aspects of projects during pre-construction phase.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- At least an HNC level qualification within a relevant subject or equivalent experience.

- Previous experience in the design and construction of electrical distribution networks up to 33kV.

- Previous experience in applying the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 to technically complex projects.

- Strong negotiation and influencing skills, being able to convey your position in a clear and concise manner.

- Proficiency with using Microsoft Office applications. Knowledge of electrical network modelling and the NRSWA code of practice would be advantageous.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Asset Engineer (Control & Instrumentation - Cyber Security) to join our Thermal team based at Peterhead Power Station. Reporting into the E, C & I Lead Asset Engineer, you will be responsible for providing technical oversight and support across the station within your area of expertise and ensuring management plans for station assets meet company objectives in terms of SHE performance, cost, reliability, efficiency and availability.

Key Responsibilities:

- Create, maintain & execute asset management plans for the allocated assets e.g. Distributed Control System, Continuous Emissions Monitoring System, PI Processbook & Instrumentation Systems inc. Field Equipment. All in line with Cyber security guidelines and standards.

- Determine the maintenance strategy for the allocated assets and create and maintain the necessary preventative and predictive maintenance tasks in Maximo. Specify and maintain spares stockholdings for assets in your area of responsibility. Contribute to FMEA, RCM and other asset related studies identifying issues and specifying corrective action. Supervise site works for execution of projects and asset related tasks. Carry out RCA on plant failures and carry out rectification as required.

- Provide technical oversight and support across the station within your area of expertise. Provide the link between the station and external technical experts, e.g. central Engineering, Generation Development and OEMs. Example Systems: T3000, Envirosoft, PI Processbook, Beran, Zoom, BVM etc. Supervising and executing repairs on site.

- There is a general responsibility to maintain compliance with legislation, in addition you may have responsibility for maintaining station compliance with specific areas of legislation relevant to the role.

- Manage revenue and capital projects in your area of responsibility complying with the company project management and plant & process change processes.

What do I need?

To be considered we would love you to have:

- Degree qualified in an applicable engineering discipline or relevant experience.

- Skilled in Control & Instrumentation Field Equipment, Distributed Control Systems e.g. T3000, Intouch, Osisoft PI and various control techniques.

- Proven track record of plant troubleshooting & preparation of work packs for execution.

- Experience of Cyber-Security/Digital Engineering in an Operational environment, preferably within the Energy Industry and understanding of the regulatory requirements for OT Cybersecurity.

- Experienced using computerised maintenance management systems, preferably Maximo.
