With the launch of a further Mental Health Support Teams (MHST) in Waveney & Norfolk, we are looking to recruit three Senior Wellbeing Practitioners. Two posts will be based in King's Lynn, one with the new West Team and one with the established King's Lynn Team. An additional post will be based at Dereham with our established MHST Breckland Team (see separate advert). All will have a start date in January 2025, to coincide with the launch of the new West Team. Successful applicants will be able to complete the UEA supervisor course in 2025.

The post holder will:

Provide case management and clinical supervision to Education Mental Health Practitioners (EMHP’s) and Trainee EMHPs under the direction of the Senior Clinicians and Clinical & Team Lead.

Manage a caseload and the provision of Mental Health Care services to children and young people with mild to moderate mental health problems in education settings.

Provide assessment and formulation of mental health difficulties in children and young people.

Offer evidence-based practice in guided self-help, CBT, child and adolescent mental health practice and Whole School Approaches to mental health .

Clinically develop the provision of group work for children/young people and training for teaching staff, to include training and mentoring EMHP colleagues in order to improve the quality of the group work and training that we deliver.

Will ensure the ‘voice of the child/young person’ is pivotal in all aspects of clinical practice and development. Co-production will underpin the MHST’s.

Participate in the MHST Supervisors course run through the University of East Anglia. Delivery may be face to face in Norwich, online or a blend of the two.

Clinical
1. Under the direction of the MHST Senior Clinician, be accountable and responsible for a defined clinical caseload.

2. Provide screening, assessment, psychosocial formulations and interventions (e.g. psycho-educational interventions, CBT informed Guided Self Help, solution focused work, systemic work and group support), and to measure outcomes for all interventions, for mild to moderate mental health difficulties in educational settings.

3. Provide a service that is comprehensive and accessible to the whole school community, targeting mild to moderate mental health problems in children and young people aged 4 to 19 years old.

4. Provide a service that is equitable and non-discriminatory in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and disability or any other protected characteristic.

5. Support professionals in making appropriate referrals and in carrying out the mental health aspects of their own roles.

6. Liaise closely with other professionals including GPs, Paediatricians, Specialist CAMHS, school counsellors, Children’s Services, other voluntary agencies and the University of East Anglia.

7. Make appropriate referrals to other service providers in the statutory and voluntary sectors and redirect clients to other sources of appropriate support within the local community as required

8. Provide consultation as required to other professionals (such as teachers and Family Workers) around mental health issues in children and young people in educational settings

9. Work creatively with other members of the team to create training packages for teachers and support/awareness sessions for young people and parents/carers

10.Develop a ‘local knowledge’ of the locality and its services and facilities, particularly in relation to mental health issues

11. Deliver psychoeducation and support to parents/carers and teachers, conveying formulations with sensitivity in easily understood language

12. Enhance emotional wellbeing and to promote or build resilience in children and young people through educational workshops, assemblies and PSHE lessons

13. Conduct risk assessments, prepare risk management plans and initiate appropriate action where indicated (including referrals to relevant secondary care services)

14. Actively contribute to team multi-disciplinary working

15. Demonstrate appropriate understanding of the legal and ethical issues in providing mental health care to children and/or adolescents

16. Demonstrate an understanding of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and the Care Act. The post holder will also have an understanding of Safeguarding Children and Adults and Child Protection procedures

17.You will be required to work with young people whose behaviour is personally challenging and deal with frequent exposure to highly distressing or highly emotional circumstances

18. To support the rollout of further MHSTs across Norfolk and Waveney

Clinical Supervision and Training

1. Undertake appropriate clinical supervision on a regular basis in accordance with the relevant professional guidelines and policies

2. Provide clinical and case supervision to Education Mental Health Practitioners (EMHPs) and Trainee EMHPs. This will involve supervising several elements of their practice:

a. Low intensity cognitive behavioural informed interventions and

b. Whole School Approach to mental health in education settings

c. Attend the EMHP Supervisors Course at the University of East Anglia

d. Offer training to Education staff and other agencies in CBT based interventions

e. Attend locally organised and national training appropriate to the work role

f. Support trainees and complete relevant paperwork associated with trainee UEA EMHP course requirements.

The new Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions for children, young people, and their families, working across both educational and healthcare settings.

Successful candidates will receive training in delivering Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) informed, guided self-help for mild to moderate mental health problems. They will gain their (funded) Diploma at the University of East Anglia, whilst working clinically within either a new or established Mental Health Support Team (MHST) in Norfolk or Waveney.

This is in collaboration with NHS England, Health Education England and the Department for Education, following on from the 2017 Green Paper Transforming children and young people’s mental health provision. This is a roll out of the work to improve access to mental health care for young people set out in the NHS Long Term Plan.

Successful candidates will be employed by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust who deliver MHST services across Norfolk & Waveney.
During the training year, post holders will participate in 64 University days. The method of delivery is likely to be a blend of face-to-face learning (requiring travel to the University of East Anglia in Norwich) and online delivery.

Successful candidates will be employed on a full time one year training contract at Agenda for Change (AfC) Band 4. Upon successful completion of the training year (passing both UEA requirements and service requirement), a permanent AfC Band 5 EMHP contract will be offered.

All applicants must demonstrate in their application the ability to work at degree level or have an equivalent level of relevant experience, with a proven record of previous learning or formal study in child development, wellbeing, psychology, mental health or education. Further to that, experience of working with children and young people and an understanding of the educational system in England is highly desirable. All applicants must be able to demonstrate they can balance the conflicting demands of academic study and clinical work.

The Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner role will:
• Work closely alongside a team of mental health professionals delivering a wide range of evidence informed interventions, under supervision.
• Develop and practice evidence-based skills under supervision to work directly with children, young people and families.
• Develop and practice evidence-based skills under supervision to carry out holistic and child-centred mental health assessments, including risk assessments.
• Candidates will earn an NHS funded qualification from UEA, whilst working clinically in service.

The Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner is required to:
• Demonstrate the ability to work at degree level or have an equivalent level of relevant experience, with a proven record of previous learning or formal study in child development, wellbeing or mental health.
• Demonstrate their experience of working with children and young people, their families and others.
• Demonstrate their experience of working and liaising with a wide variety of agencies and stakeholders.
• Have experience of working with children and young people who have social, emotional and/or mental health difficulties.

As a Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner, you will be expected to work under supervision as part of a dynamic mental health team in a creative environment where evidence-based interventions, new ideas, ways of working and supporting children and young people are actively encouraged. This approach requires flexibility and adaptability, and above all a passion for working with children and young people in educational settings.

Over the course of the training year, the post-holder will, under supervision, develop knowledge and practice skills to employ a range of evidence-based interventions for common mental health problems. These are delivered via direct individual and group support for children, young people and their parents, in line with the university expectation. The MHSTs work with education settings to provide help to staff in schools and colleges on their ‘Whole School Approach’ (WSA) to mental health.
