Applications are invited for a Speciality Doctor in Microbiology at University Hospitals Derby and Burton NHS Trust (UHDB) to join the current team of Microbiologists. This is post will support the expansion of the current infection service including both the Derby and Burton sites.
The post attracts 11.5 programmed activities (10 PAs Monday to Friday and 1.5PAs for weekends/on call), with the post holder being expected to work flexibly across the Acute Trusts hospital sites (Derby and Burton) as a merged organisation.


You would join a multi-disciplinary department aiming to deliver a clinically orientated, forward thinking infection service across UHDB.

There are currently microbiology laboratories on both the Royal Derby and Queens Hospital Burton sites, providing comprehensive diagnostic microbiology services to University Hospitals of Derby and Burton acute Trusts, Derbyshire and Staffordshire general practices and local private healthcare providers. The post holder will be expected to participate with the current medical staff in the provision of an infection consultation service, infection rounds on specialist units, the interpretation of laboratory reports and the infection service.

Educational and other activities
• This includes participation in the preparation and writing policies and SOPs; collecting and analysing audit and surveillance data; responses to various documents; writing educational PowerPoint presentations; checking minutes of meetings.
• Involvement in quality assurance performance within the department, including taking part in all relevant national external quality assurance (NEQAS) programmes.

Based at Queens Hospital in Burton, we are appointing a Senior Clinical Fellow (ST4 level) within our Stroke team. This will be a full-time, fixed-term service appointment for 1 year with a possibility of extension. Applications for less than full-time working patterns are welcome.

You will be based within the Department of Stroke Medicine and work with consultants, advanced care practitioners (ACPs), Therapists and Discharge Support Officers to deliver a responsive service to medical patients throughout the hospital. Your speciality team will give you consistent support and further learning opportunities.

The post can be tailored to individual requirements but centres upon the provision of care to the Stroke Medicine/General Medicine teams. There is scope to access opportunities that enable you to fulfil the ‘alternative certificate’ required for stage 2 training (critical care training opportunities are not available)

One day per week (on average) can be spent performing QIP/teaching/attending clinics etc. The postholder will do at least one Stroke clinic a week. The department runs a number of specialist clinics such as TIA clinics which the postholder may be able to attend depending on their training needs.

The in-patient medical division based at Royal Derby Hospital (RDH)/Queens Hospital Burton (QHB) offers a high standard of care, across a number of Medical Specialities for the population of Derbyshire, Staffordshire and the surrounding areas with dedicated nursing and therapy staff.

The bed-holding specialities with Specialist Medicine Business Unit 1 consist of Respiratory, Cardiology, Neurology, Stroke, Dermatology and Department of Medicine for the Elderly (DME). Queen’s Hospital is a vibrant District General Hospital situated in the East Staffordshire town of Burton upon Trent. SCFs in Stroke have the opportunity to benefit from working within the new Stroke pathway operating across Derbyshire and East Staffordshire. QHB is the partner site to the Hyperacute Stroke Unit at the RDH and provides care to patients recovering from stroke, following their initial 72 hours at the RDH. Patients at QHB require attentive stroke specific medical care, investigation for causes of stroke and close MDT working with both inpatient and community rehabilitation services. There are opportunities for you to join the hyperacute/thrombolysis team at RDH on a 1:7 weeks basis to gain thrombolysis experience (Mon-Fri 9-5 pm)

UHDB is seeking to recruit a Speciality Doctor in Rheumatology to join the well established team. The department’s work involves the assessment, follow-up and monitoring of patients with inflammatory arthritis, CTD, metabolic bone diseases and osteoarthritis. QHB site has 2.6 WTE consultants providing service from main site and also community. This site is also supported by registrars and Clinical Nurse Specialists, specialist physiotherapy and OT. Based at Queens Hospital in Burton, we are appointing an F3 doctor to our Department of Medicine for the Elderly. This will be a full-time, fixed-term service appointment until August 2025, with a possibility of extension. Applications for less than full-time working patterns are welcome.

The post holder will work 8 hours on duty Monday to Friday, rostered between 0900hrs and 1700hrs (option of 0800-1600 available). Rota to be confirmed upon appointment.

In addition, there are daily ‘board rounds’ with the opportunity to discuss the management of the ward patients with a senior clinician. The post holder will be attached to the Department of Medicine for the Elderly You will also have regular out-patient clinics with full consultant supervision. You will be expected to work as middle-grade doctors, seeing speciality referrals and leading your junior team with full consultant support.

Plans and organises the daily routines of the multi disciplinary soft facilities team at Queens Hospital, Burton.

Day to day supervision of staff.



Ensure the delivery of a high quality, integrated service in line with national standards of cleanliness and agreed performance monitoring measures.

You will support the Biomedical Scientists by performing a wide variety of tasks associated with the processing of samples. Duties vary between departments and include the sorting, preparation, processing and handling of blood, urine, tissue and bodily fluids.

This post is based at the Queens Hospital Burton Site. You will work within a rotational shift system covering core hours Monday to Sunday between 7am and 9pm. There will also be an expectation to work bank holidays and other shifts set within a 24/7 period to ensure adequate service provision.
