We are looking for an enthusiastic, quality-focused individual with strong leadership skills for the post of Senior Biomedical Scientist in the Virology laboratory at Hull University Teaching Hospitals.
The successful applicant will be a qualified BMS, with MSc, or equivalent and will be responsible for the day-to-day operational running of a section of the Virology department.
The post holder is part of the management team responsible for delivering a clinical laboratory service that achieves the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, and resource management within the Trust. You will be directly responsible to the Chief Biomedical Scientist in accordance with departmental and Trust policies and procedures.
Applicants must be state registered with the HCPC and have extensive post registration experience in Virology.
The Virology laboratory has a wide test repertoire including a range of molecular testing.

The position will include weekend, late shifts and bank holidays.

• Responsible for the day-to-day operation of one of the designated areas of the laboratory.
• An in depth scientific knowledge of all areas of Virology.
• Responsible for managing a small team of Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants.
• Maintain adequate supplies of reagents and consumables.
• Undertake analytical, technical and administrative trouble-shooting to ensure a reliable fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service is delivered.
• Train, develop and motivate staff to meet service requirements.
• Communicate with other senior laboratory staff and clinicians, and service users from within the trust and from external sources.
• Responsible for day-to-day organization, maintenance of work flow and any particular responsibilities associated with their designated sections.
• Maintain at all times high standards and quality and an up to date knowledge of virology and current working practices within the diagnostic laboratory.
• Demonstrate experience of compliance with standards as required within work duties such as UKAS and other relevant professional and legislative bodies.
• Participate in recruitment, selection and induction of staff
