The Role and Department

We are looking for an experienced Team Leader to join our Post Award section within Research and Innovation Services (RIS). The Research Operations Post Award section is responsible for providing overarching support and quality assurance for research, knowledge exchange and expert services Post-Award finance-related activity, including financial management for live grants; provision of live grant information to grant holders and senior management; financial reporting to funders and other external bodies; and support in the management of studentships and grant administration.

You will have the following key responsibilities;

• Line manage a team of 5 Post Award Finance and Project Officers providing advice and guidance on University procedures and pastoral care.


• Provide training to new and existing staff members as appropriate and mentor team members to ensure a thorough understanding of university financial regulations, research related policies and external funders.


• Monitor and coordinate the performance and workload for the Post Award team, planning cover to ensure smooth service provision through peaks and troughs.


• Provide advice, and lead on, complex or high-risk awards.


• Provide a senior check, where appropriate, of the team's work to ensure accurate calculations and reporting. procedures and pastoral care.


• Develop and deliver training sessions to relevant university staff on Post-Award procedures.


• Contribute to the design, implementation and monitoring of new policies and quality standards, procedures and systems for the post award management of Durham's externally funded research activities to ensure effective working and continuous improvement.


• Actively participate in regional and national networks and working groups to represent Durham and share best practice across the sector in research project management, ensuring that Durham is actively engaged in relevant consultations and well positioned to understand and, where appropriate, influence funder policy.

The University is currently offering hybrid working, which means you will have flexibility around working arrangements. Currently you would need to come into the office a minimum of twice a week. You can work in the office on additional days of the week if you choose.

Your new role
As an experienced Finance Manager or Company Accountant, you will be involved in setting up and managing assets of the organisation, ensuring all financial and management accounting information is provided. You will be responsible for producing year-end accounts as well as all the general day to day accounting duties - VAT, journals, grant administration, reconciliations, analysis etc. You will have support from junior team members for administrative finance tasks. You could be a qualified accountant, current studier, AAT qualified or qualified by experience.

Your engagement skills will be excellent, and having the ability to work closely with operational colleagues in managing financial information will be essential for success. Demonstrating a track record of delivery in financial management, as well as an understanding of asset management and the production of year-end accounts will be key to success in this role.

Hays are currently recruiting for an exciting opportunity to join a busy Finance team as a Finance Manager on an 18-month Fixed Term Contract basis based in the Darlington office (hybrid working).
The Finance Manager position will be responsible for financial control activities within the Financial Control Centre of Excellence, with a specific focus on finance risk management oversight, internal control monitoring and associated reporting. What you'll need to succeed

• The successful candidate will be an experienced qualified Finance Manager, with experience of co-ordinating regulatory and statutory reporting, financial controls policy and month-end close processes within a Financial Services environment.
• You will proactively identify and drive the delivery of an agenda for continuous improvement both in terms of quality and efficiency, across the processes and systems, and champion automation where feasible.
• You will have a risk-based mind-set, ensuring oversight of financial control policy, and development of risk and internal control MI reporting (including Key Performance Indicators and controls assurance testing).
• To succeed in this role, high attention to detail and the ability to prioritise your workload to meet the various deadlines is key.
• You will have the ability to effectively communicate and build effective relationships with various stakeholders across the business, including Finance teams, Finance BPs, and Business stakeholders.
• We are looking for an individual who is self-directed and can take ownership of tasks, who's keen to role model a positive can-do attitude.
• As a Finance Manager, you will be analytical in your approach to allow you to effectively identify and resolve potential discrepancies discovered as part of the transformation journey.

Reporting to the Managing Director, the purpose of the role is to be the senior finance person on site, taking responsibility for all financial matters within the company.

Duties will include:

• Production of monthly management accounts and supporting information.
• Rolling cash flow forecasting, managing supplier payments, bank reconciliation and overseeing credit control.
• Monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
• Production of Year end Accounts and liaison with external auditors.
• Monthly customer, and product sales, analysis.
• Process monthly payroll, including pension scheme return and management.
• HMRC VAT and PAYE returns.
• Management of Foreign Currency payments to non UK suppliers.
• Managing Xero accounting system, including supplier invoices, accruals and prepayments.
• Company credit card reconciliation and journal posting.
• Management of Fixed Asset register.

It is essential that the successful candidate holds or is working towards a recognised UK accountancy qualification (AAT/ACCA/CIMA). Previous experience in a similar role is essential, experience working with Xero will be highly beneficial.

The role is office based, Monday to Friday 37.5 hours per week.

The Role and Department

The Finance Manager will report directly to the Finance Business Partner who is responsible for the remit of Colleges, Student Experience and Estates & Facilities. The position will take ownership of the financial postings and planning for Colleges & Wider Student Experience (CWSE), being involved in forward-looking forecasting and planning as well as providing financial compliance and having key involvement with wider Finance, HR and CIS colleagues in order to take forward the objectives of CWSE. The role will also be involved in change management as the University continues to implement its new financial systems and associated financial processes.
