South West London and St Georges NHS Trust are looking to recruit two graduate psychology applicants for a new role on an apprenticeship programme in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) as a trainee Clinical Associate in Psychology (CAP).
This is a new and exciting career and is a training apprenticeship post, combining work and study. As an apprentice, you will be employed to work within a Single Point of Access (SPA) team within our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service for 18 months as a Band 5 employee.

Your MSc courses fees will be paid for by the Trust. Once apprenticeship requirements and endpoint assessments are successfully completed, you will be eligible to apply for positions as a qualified Child CAP at Band 6.
The MSc in Clinical Associate in Psychology starts on 16 September 2024 so candidates will need to be available to start employment with the Trust by 9 September 2024. Interviews will be held in person on 9thAugust 2024.
Trainee CAPs will help us to deliver evidence-based interventions and will be part of the multidisciplinary team with the opportunity to work with a range of presenting problems. You will be supported to carry out a wide range of assessments and gain experience of working with difficulties such as anxiety and depression, as well as neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum condition and ADHD.
Full training will be provided, and you will receive regular supervision from a Clinical Psychologist based in one of our SPA CAMHS services.
Child CAPs will be able to practice autonomously with appropriate support, working within their scope of practice, under clinical supervision. CAPs will work alongside other psychological professions and in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
It is a requirement of the apprenticeship programme that applicants have to provide evidence of a pass in GCSE English and Maths (or the equivalent if educated overseas). Applicants must be eligible for graduate membership with the British Psychological Society, and have a desire to work with children, young people and families within a multidisciplinary team. We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and/or with lived experiences of mental health problems.
Our Child CAPs posts are based in SPA CAMHS clinics in the London Boroughs of Wandsworth and Sutton.

Clinical
Under appropriate supervision from a qualified psychologist.
• Under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist, implement, in conjunction with other members of the team, plans for the psychological treatment and/or management of a patient’s mental health problems using interventions agreed with the clinical supervisor.
• Agree work/caseload levels with team manager and professional lead.
• To participate in team-based clinical supervision.
• To be responsible for the flexible management of a defined caseload to meet the individual mental health needs of the client and the related needs of carer’s within the Trust’s policies and all relevant external statutory frameworks and practice frameworks
• To conduct all work for the Trust within Trust policy and professional frameworks at all times and have a clear understanding of ones Code of Professional Conduct, risk assessment and safeguarding protocols, and relevant statutory and legal frameworks within which all clinical work is conducted To ensure effective communication within the team and share relevant information as required.
• To implement and/or participate in crisis intervention measures as required with the client/family or in conjunction with other agencies as defined by Trust policy and reflecting safeguarding and risk management procedures
• To maintain accurate clinical documentation in line with Professional and Trust’s record keeping standards.
• To ensure continuity of care by:
1. Providing client with contact numbers
2. Planning appointments
3. Maintaining contact during episodes of in-patient care and involvement in discharge planning
4. Contact and communication with GPs & other Primary care staff
5. Out of hours arrangements/cover for Annual Leave
6. To manage the transfer of a client’s care to another team member or service
7. Attend appropriate clinical meetings either in the community or other settings in relation to the client’s care.
• To ensure quality of care by:
1. Providing clients and carer’s with verbal and written up to date information on the services offered by the Trust, how to express their views, complaints procedure and what they can expect from their treatment
2. Involving clients in all aspects of the planning and provision of their care. Relatives/carer’s must be involved wherever possible
3. Care provided reflects the cultural and spiritual needs of the client and carer including access to interpreter’s
4. Care is prompt and based on evidence/best practice
5. Access to advocacy, support networks, service user and carer forums
6. Promote anti-discriminatory practice in all aspects of care
• To attend clinical meetings to provide the team with relevant information in relation to caseload and to receive referrals.
• To act as an effective link between Tier 3 PD services, specialist teams, secondary and primary care services and third-party agencies such as voluntary sector partners
• Act as an advisor to other professionals and develop joint working relationships.
• To provide consultation, training and support to other professionals as required.
• To be aware of the role of health promotion and actively seek to promote its benefits.
• To share the task of chairing/taking minutes with other members of the team.
• To contribute to the effective working of the multidisciplinary team and participate in team and service development and in the regular audit of team practices.
• To participate in the Trust’s complaints procedure and critical incident reporting when required and work within the policies and procedures of the Trust.
• To ensure regular attendance at managerial and clinical supervision sessions.
• To act as mentor for students and provide clinical supervision when required.
Teaching, Training and Supervision:
• In common with all psychological therapies staff, to receive regular clinical supervision in accordance with professional practice guidelines
• Actively participate in the apprenticeship assessment, reviews and end point assessment
• Maintain log demonstrating university and practice-based learning outcomes.
• To participate in continual professional development as directed including attending training courses, conferences and workshops Complete coursework to require standard and deadlines.
• Participate in appraisal and development planning, identifying and agreeing training needs.
• Maintain up to date knowledge of relevant legislation, national and local policies and issues in relation to the provision of services.
• To contribute to the training and support of other staff in provision of psychological care, including preparing and presenting teaching materials to a professional level including the use of video conferencing, audio visual packages and data visualisation.
• To give support to other Clinical Associates in Psychology and new staff of the department.
• To report to manager concerns about areas of training need.
Management, Recruitment and Service Development:
• Support service development and quality improvement initiatives within the directorate, in line with directorate priorities and in response to identified local need.
• Attend regular psychological professions meetings and maintain high standards of professional knowledge and practice in services.
Research and Service Evaluation:
• To complete the research component of the MSc.
• To contribute to audit/research/QI within the Trust using qualitative and quantitative methods.
• To plan, monitor and evaluate own work, using clinical outcomes assessments, small-scale research methodology and statistical procedures.
• Use skills in undertaking research, audit and evaluation analyse and interpret complex data, identifying trends and opportunities for improvement, complete repots and summaries using IT and statistical programmes.
Other
• To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, in consultation with the post holder’s professional and service manager(s),and (2) adherence to any local specialty standards.
• To contribute to the development and articulation of best practice in psychology across the service, by continuing to develop the skills of a reflexive and reflective scientist practitioner, taking part in regular professional supervision and appraisal and maintaining an active engagement with current developments in the field of clinical psychology and related disciplines.
• To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance in accordance with professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society and Trust policies and procedures.
• To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and issues in relation to both the specific client group and mental health.
• To perform other duties of a similar kind appropriate to the grade, which may be required from time to time by their Psychology Manager and Team Clinical Leader
