Technical Services Managers in the College of Science and Engineering have a critical function in the delivery of an effective and efficient service to support research, learning and teaching. They play a key role in co-ordinating and overseeing all aspects of delivering the specialist service to a diverse research/teaching community. The postholder provides strategic and operational technical leadership to both research and teaching staff, technicians and students, operating in a specialist competence area, identifying issues, generating ideas and management solutions to improve these services.

The Technical Services Manager for the Electrical and Electronic Workshop Services is part of the Workshop and Teaching Technical Services group in the College of Science and Engineering Technical Services function. The postholder leads and manages a team of currently 12 specialists across several technical areas, with roles ranging from grade 2 (Modern Apprentices) to grade 7 (highly skilled specialist).

The Electrical and Electronic workshop services team offers extensive technical knowledge and experience in designing and operating complex electronics and mechatronic equipment/apparatus to create unique and bespoke electrical and electronic products. The team are also extensively involved with supporting undergraduate electronic teaching labs.

This role reports to the Head of Technical Services – Workshops and Teaching Labs Services and has responsibility to the Directors of Research and Directors of Learning & Teaching to support the development and delivery of Schools strategies and business needs.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and offered on an open ended (permanent) basis. Relocation assistance will be provided where appropriate.

What is the Role?

The System Performance group at SSEN Transmission has an opportunity for a System Integration Manager (Power System Analysis) to lead a team providing detailed study support for major projects connecting to the transmission system in the north of Scotland. This role will involve the management of power system analysis specialists and the coordination of their activities with project teams and other parts of the business. The team will carry out the full range of studies required to ensure that complex projects such as HVDC, FACTS and new major AC reinforcements can be successfully integrated within our system.

The key duties & responsibilities will include:

- Plan and oversee the delivery of complex power system studies covering areas such as power quality, system stability and electromagnetic transients.

- Show technical leadership within the team and oversee the implementation of the quality assurance process for study work.

- Liaise with project teams, operational colleagues and equipment suppliers.

- Provide line management for the System Integration team members.

- Represent SSEN Transmission in external meetings and on industry workgroups.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- Experience in power system analysis, design and planning, ideally within the electricity transmission area, with working knowledge of the relevant industry and technical standards.

- A good understanding of power system modelling and analysis with experience in at least three of the following areas: load flow and short circuit calculations, dynamic (RMS) simulation, power quality and system monitoring, EMT simulation for transients, EMT simulation for control interaction studies and automation scripting.

- Experience of managing complex technical study work and line management.

- Excellent knowledge of the electricity industry, including interfaces with the regulator, the Electricity System Operator, other Transmission Owners and Distribution Network Operators.

- A degree in electrical engineering or related numerical discipline and ideally be a Chartered Engineer with a relevant institution and the ability to write clear and well-structured technical reports and specifications and provide focused information for senior management.

About the Role

As Technical Accountant, your main role will be to support the Groups application of relevant financial standards, through the assessment of ad-hoc accounting issues arising and through the maintenance of specific policies within the Groups Financial Policies Manual (GFPM).

- Fully qualified Chartered Accountant with 5+ years Post Qualified Experience in a Financial Reporting or External Audit role, ideally with plc or relevant industry experience

- Fully up to date knowledge of accounting standards and corporate governance requirements and awareness of emerging issues

- Ability to consider commercial and operational implications of technical accounting opinions

About the Role

Base Location: Flexible, however our preference is that you will be based in one of our key UK or Ireland sites, which includes but is not limited to:- Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Reading, Havant, Belfast or Dublin.

As the Renewables Engineering Electrical Technical Authority, you will;

- Write and maintain electrical technical specifications and guidance notes required for electrical primary plant (transformers, AIS & GIS switchgear, reactive compensation plant, CTs/VTs, harmonic filters), protection and auxiliary equipment.

- Provide technical input to design reviews carried out by the Design Authority and provide specialist input where required to verify project proposals are fit for purpose and identify any scope changes required.

- Ensure that all technology and equipment selected conforms to company and industry standards and specifications and approved for use.

- Provide technical guidance and advice to the renewables business for new and replacement plant and to support Asset Management regarding equipment capability or fault investigations.

- Represent company at industry body events such as Carbon Trust, DNV or CIGRE working groups and attend conferences.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- Degree in Electrical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline and Chartered Engineer status with a relevant institution or working towards chartered status.

- Demonstrable experience in the design, specification and application of electrical plant with knowledge of a range of National Grid, British and European Standards.

- The ability to technically assess issues and/or problems and critically assess a range of technical solutions. Experience in designing, manufacturing, testing, installation or maintenance of transmission voltage plant and equipment would also be advantageous.

- The capability and experience in writing technical specifications, guidance notes and work instructions for plant, equipment or substation design.

What You'll Do:

• Provide formal supervision to employees.
• Monitor the training and development of staff.
• Conduct performance evaluations and coaching.
• Oversee the recruiting and hiring of new employees.
• Schedule and manage the team's daily activities.
• Establish work schedules, assign tasks, and cross-train staff. Set and track staff and department deadlines.
• Mentor and coach as needed.
• Coordinate and manage facility repairs and maintenance by working with technicians, vendors, and contractors.
• Maintain positive client relationships and conduct meetings on unresolved facility issues.
• Prepare and manage capital projects, operating budgets, and variance reports.
• Perform facility inspections quality assurance following local, state, and federal regulations. Suggest operational efficiencies, repairs, and upgrade opportunities.
• Manage environmental health and safety procedures for facilities.

Qualifications

• Recognised Trade apprenticeship or level 3 NVQ in a trade
• Full Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology or equivalent
• Has been an SAP in one of the following disciplines:
• High Voltage
• Confined Spaces
• Pressure Systems
• Good customer relationship building skills
• Conversant with Microsoft Office
• Must be able to attend site in the event of emergency and provide guidance to staff in the event ofemergencies.
• Availability to attend site at weekends for planned building shutdowns

Preferred

• ILM 3 certificate or above
• Proven team leadership skills
• IOSH/Nebosh qualification
• Have previously been appointed as an Authorising Engineer
