The Senior Software Engineer – Integration post will sit within Social Security Scotland’s Chief Digital Office (CDO), which has a remit to provide infrastructure and systems to support both the wider social security programme and Social Security Scotland.

DDaT Pay Supplement;

This post attracts a £5,000 Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) pay supplement after a 3 months DDaT competency qualifying period. The payment will be backdated to your start date in the role. Pay supplements are temporary payments designed to address recruitment and retention issues caused by market pressures and are subject to regular review. This post is part of the Scottish Government DDaT profession. As a member of the profession you will join the professional development system, currently BCS RoleModelplus.

Main Duties;

As a Software Engineer in the Integration Platform team, you will be expected to:

• Manage service components to ensure they meet business needs and performance targets.
• Identify process optimisation opportunities with guidance and contribute to the implementation of proposed solutions.
• Participate in the information security process.
• Design and implement embedded security controls in solutions and services.
• Competently apply a modern standards approach and guide others to do so.
• Collaborate with others when necessary to review specifications.
• Use the agreed specifications to design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium-to-high complexity, using the right standards and tools.
• Participate in team prototyping.
• Advocate for the use of prototypes and testing with others.
• Establish design patterns and iterate them.
• Use a variety of prototyping methods and choose the most appropriate.
• Identify, locate and fix faults.
• Design systems characterised by medium levels of risk, impact, and business or technical complexity.
• Select appropriate design standards, methods and tools, and ensure they are applied effectively.
• Review the systems designs of others to ensure the selection of appropriate technology, efficient use of resources and integration of multiple systems and technology.
• Define the integration build.
• Co-ordinate build activities across systems.
• Understand how to undertake and support integration testing activities.
• Prioritise and define approaches to understand user stories, guiding others in doing so.

SSEN Transmission has an opportunity for a Senior System Performance Engineer to undertake and lead power system studies to support the integration of low carbon generation and related technologies onto the transmission system in the north of Scotland. Our System Performance team provides an advanced simulation capability which includes cutting edge large scale EMT modelling using PSCAD on dedicated high performance computing hardware.

The key duties & responsibilities will be:

- Define and deliver detailed simulation studies to support the connection of renewable generation, FACTS devices, HVDC links and railway feeder stations.

- Show technical leadership within the team and provide training and mentoring for less experienced colleagues.

- Take the lead on scoping and delivering innovation projects ensuring that our business is at the forefront of new developments in system modelling and monitoring.

- Support the operation of our network by assisting with analysis of events and disturbances.

- Represent SSEN Transmission in external meetings and on industry workgroups.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- Experience in power system analysis, design and planning, ideally within the electricity transmission area, with working knowledge of the relevant industry and technical standards.

- A deep understanding of power system modelling and analysis with extensive experience in at least three of the following areas: load flow and short circuit calculations, dynamic (RMS) simulation, power quality and system monitoring, EMT simulation for transients, EMT simulation for control interaction studies and automation scripting.

- Experience with industry standard analysis tools such as PSS/E, Power Factory, PSCAD and Matlab/Simulink. Knowledge of the Python scripting language would also be advantageous.

- Excellent knowledge of the electricity industry, including interfaces with the regulator, the Electricity System Operator, other Transmission Owners and Distribution Network Operators.

- A degree in electrical engineering or related numerical discipline and ideally be a Chartered Engineer with a relevant institution and the ability to write clear and well-structured technical reports and specifications and provide focused information for senior management.

What you'll do

You’ll apply widely agreed data software engineering principles and methodologies to design, develop, test and maintain applications and services to achieve the stated business and technology goals within required budgets and timelines. You’ll also:

• Design and develop new reusable services and APIs for use across the bank
• Design and develop data components that are amenable for a greater automation of build, release testing and deployment process on all environments
• Drive the reuse and sharing of platform components and technologies within the software engineering teams
• Deliver data components to enable the delivery of platforms, applications and services
• Write unit and integration tests, in automated test environments to ensure code quality

The skills you'll need

You’ll need a strong background in data engineering, software design or database design and architecture, as well as extensive experience of developing in a micro-services architecture. You should also have development experience in a programming language, experience of using industry recognised frameworks and development tooling, and a background of implementing programming best practice, especially around scalability, availability and performance.

You’ll also need:

• Proven track record of solving business and technical problems using data in micro-service architecture
• Extensive experience of test-driven development alongside the use of automated test frameworks, mocking and stubbing and unit testing tools
• Knowledge of the key phases of software delivery lifecycle and established software development methodologies
• Experience of working in an environment where products must be delivered to specific timescales
• An understanding of data engineering tools including Hadoop, streamSets, MongoDB, postGresDB, REST and python
• The ability to understand and support, modify and maintain systems and code developed by other engineering teams
