Trains and supervises inmates in manufacture and assembly of various upholstered items. Trains and supervises inmates in the use of a wide variety of upholstery tools and equipment including sewing machines, fabric cutting equipment, cushion machines, pneumatic staple guns, button machines, upholstery presses, foam cutting and gluing equipment, scissors, regulators, tack hammers, and frame assembly equipment which includes clamps, pneumatic nailers, drills, screw drivers and related hand tools.
Must be able to interpret and check plans, blueprints, drawings, sketches and specifications used in the design and manufacture of wood and upholstered products.
Must have thorough knowledge of upholstery manufacturing processes from basic slip-seat construction to fitting of loose cushions and more advanced techniques such as tufting, spring suspension design and determining the appropriate density of polyurethane foam materials to be used in a given chair design.
The incumbent must be familiar with leather, vinyls, and a broad spectrum of fabrics commonly used in the contract furniture industry such as nylon, herculon, polyester, and fire retardant fabrics such as Trevia and have a working knowledge of the performance, application and characteristics of each.
The Upholstery Worker Supervisor must ensure compliance with UNICOR blueprints and requirements mandated by UNICOR and BOP policies in the daily operation of the department.
Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.
