The post holder will be responsible for the effective leadership & management, service improvement, business development, strategy and non-clinical management input for Ophthalmology (inc community), OMFS & ENT Directorates. Particular emphasis on close working with the Professional Heads of Service and SDU leads to develop relationships with all stakeholders and improve Quality.

The post-holder will assist the Director, Deputy Director, SDU Leads, and Nursing Leads, by providing efficient and effective operational and general service management to services within the Directorate. Providing cancer related activities, ensuring that services are responsive, innovative and provided to the highest possible clinical and performance standards. They will also take forward projects to improve service delivery for both areas which include patient experience.

The post-holder will need to be a critical thinker and proactive problem solver and develop and implement lasting solutions in conjunction with clinical and managerial colleagues. They will also be a key member of the Care Group Management Team, taking full responsibility for actions and for keeping other team members fully always informed.





Provide management and leadership oversight to Ophthalmology, Trauma &Orthopaedics and Urology under the Care Group of Surgery and Critical Care.

Plan and manage the implementation of projects to modernise services and to improve facilities and working practices to meet organisational and service delivery plans.

Lead on the development of specific staff engagement measures within the defined service areas, and support the implementation of the Care Groups Staff Survey and Engagement action plan, so that staff are able to contribute effectively to the achievement of objectives and targets

Monitor service improvement programmes and associated work streams that support specific patient pathways. Ensure collaborative partnership working with other NHS Trusts, CCGs and partners across the health economy, as required.

Identify cost pressures, service development and cost improvement plans.

Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon

Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust is proud to offer this exciting opportunity to work in one of the most beautiful parts of the country in an expanding general surgery department and colorectal unit.

This is a new position to join the existing four colorectal surgeons in this busy unit. The Colorectal Surgery Unit at BHT is a high-volume cancer and IBD surgical unit and has an excellent track record with some of the highest volume surgeons in England on NBOCA.

The aim of this appointment is primarily to improve delivery of elective colorectal cancer services to a very high standard and within timelines set down by NHS England, and to create capacity to allow provision of other benign colorectal services.

Purpose of the post

The purpose of this post is multifaceted: to expand, develop and provide simple and complex colorectal surgical services, and diagnostic colorectal endoscopic services with the rest of the GI and Gastroenterology teams; and to help develop and provide an acute inpatient and ambulatory care pathway as part of a cohesive specialist emergency team, and deliver emergency general surgery services as part of the whole department.

The respiratory department is currently based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital with additional outpatient services and lung function services at Wycombe Hospital. A new candidate’s job could be weighted to be spending more time at Wycombe hospital, if it suited the person for their commute.

The department receives referrals mainly from Buckinghamshire and some from adjacent counties (Berks, Herts, Oxon). The spectrum of disease is wide including about 200 newly diagnosed lung cancers and 50+ cases of tuberculosis per year, with a large cohort of interstitial lung disease patients. COPD and asthma cases remain a large amount of our work and community MDT clinics have been started by us in 2020 and are likely to expand. The local GPs are excellent and are involved in the CCG decision processes.

The new consultant will be based at SMH in the department of Respiratory Medicine unless they wish to be based at Wycombe or Amersham. They will look after 20-24 inpatients on a rotational basis, (currently 2:7 weeks, but this will change with the appointment of more consultants); regular outpatient clinics, the weekly number of which will vary according to the ward rotational commitments ( x1 a week when IP consultant, x4 a week when OP consultant). We also have a consultant rotation for inreach referrals for respiratory to the acute medical units, to aid early discharge with associated ambulatory care pathways to review patients.

The Respiratory team won the Trust award of Acute Healthcare team of the Year; and the Consultant Lead won the Trust Leadership award in 2021.

We are looking to expand to provide a training for our formal Respiratory Specialist Unit for NIV, which is in place now; to aid our admission avoidance service; and to support respiratory outpatients to. All applicants within 6 months of CCT at interview date are welcome and all other subspecialist interests would be considered, and mentored. Less than full time working will be considered and welcomed.

The Respiratory Team has approximately 45 inpatients. 2 consultants run the 2 wards on rotation. 3 registrars and 2 IMT from the HETV/Oxford rotation and 9 juniors support the wards. We provide COPD and COVID early supported discharge.

We have weekend daytime on call for the respiratory wards giving 7/7 Respiratory cover; and take part in the acute general medicine on call during the week. There has been a large investment in Acute Medicine with a reconfiguration of the urgent care pathway, and appointment of new Acute Physicians. Sub-specialty outpatient clinics exist for lung cancer, pleural, cough/airways and TB. We work very much as a team of consultants with MDT meetings, and have commitment to teaching all grades of doctors.
