The incumbent will be a Nurse III Patient Safety Specialist in the Office of the Functional Champion (OFC), providing dedicated support to VA's Electronic Health Record Modernization - Integration Office (EHRM-IO), within the Office of the Deputy Secretary of VA (DEPSECVA). EHRM-IO is responsible for ensuring that VA successfully prepares for, deploys, and transitions to, a new electronic health record (EHR) system. EHRM-IO will ensure the modernized EHR system is positioned to meet VA needs, and enable seamless delivery of healthcare to Veterans and qualified beneficiaries.

The Patient Safety Specialist will assist in the development and implementation of patient safety programs. He/she will have a significant role on behalf of OFC in patient safety planning and will continue to support these activities as the program matures. The incumbent works closely with the patient safety leadership team. Ultimately, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring a safe optimization of the modernized EHR. This position will work with Contractors, the Office of the ADUSH for Quality, Safety, and Value, and other partners to:

• Evaluate and review the EHR implementation safety processes and confer with leadership to evaluate and initiate changes.
• Will be familiar with all aspects of the Patient Safety Program including reporting, analyzing data, creating reports, education, policy changes, and promoting a culture of safety for Veterans.

• Establish methods to monitor the patient safety management process and maintain appropriate documentation.
• Collaborate with EHRM-IO leadership and safety partners to assess and improve systems of care delivery

• Proactively engage and identify Serious Safety Events (SSEs) utilizing a standardized classification system and facilitate investigation and action plan development in response to SSEs.

• Review, report, data trend, and track patient safety related events and near miss events, risks and issues

• Facilitates Root Cause Analyses for SSEs across the health system and helps lead the organization in adopting and embracing a culture of high reliability and safety.

• Use only approved methods, procedures and techniques in job functions and in operation of aircraft and stresses standardization of job functions. Conducts ground school on aircraft systems in support of flight units.
• Applies the latest methods and techniques of instruction obtained through attendance at formal instructor training courses and seminars.
• Maintains liaison with aviation safety inspectors who conduct the Air Carrier Airmen Certification Program, and serves in an advisory and consulting capacity on job functions in that specialty.
• Recommends improvements and revisions to management on existing approved courses and the overall training program.
• Develops courses, outlines, and lesson plans necessary to conduct the ground training phase. Develops and analyzes tests to assure the objectives of the course are met.
• Familiarizes students with the latest regulations and requirements affecting the aviation safety inspector's job functions.
• Standardizes the inspector's performance, proficiency and timing relative to compliance with existing job functions procedures.
• Evaluates and reports the capabilities and performance of each student. Also reports areas in which further study and training are necessary.
• May be assigned responsibilities as course manager of one or more courses administered by the branch. May also be temporarily assigned to special projects to accomplish work as may be required.
• The Academy instructor has responsibility which requires highly specialized training, significant managerial skills, specific technical qualifications, and detailed proficiency equal to the highest nonsupervisory grade level in the field that significantly represents the occupational workforce.
• Possesses a high degree of human relations and communications skills which enables the individual to function as an agency role model for both new and current FAA employees.
• Possesses the skills to be able to understand and convert procedural requirements into overall function design of the FAA Academy's CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE to provide reliable and accurate course development and instruction. Maintains technical knowledge and currency equivalent to that of the highest level full performance specialist.
• The incumbent must have an in depth knowledge of the FAA Academy training process as it relates to the Aviation Safety Inspector work force job functions. Required to maintain a high level of proficiency in the operation of high performance aircraft used in air transportation; the effectiveness with which the branch training programs are coordinated and implemented will depend upon the aeronautical knowledge and proficiency, while maintaining expertise in commercial and/or general aviation state-of-the-art training programs.
• Provides support to the management team in the preparation and administration of the budget; coordination of staff training and travel administration; program management and planning; workload scheduling; space utilization, resource management; security; property management - accountable items; reports and records as required.
• When performing the duties of team coordinator, the employee will coordinate resources, such as, rooms and supplies; work schedules; T&A's; travel orders; suspenses; and, budget inputs.

*Incumbent must hold an airline transport pilot certificate or hold a commercial pilot certificate with multiengine land and instrument ratings and be eligible for an airline transport pilot certificate.

• YOU WILL/MAY:
• Ensure that regulated establishments produce a safe product by executing appropriate inspection methods, determining non-compliance with regulatory requirements, documenting noncompliance and initiating enforcement actions, where warranted.
• Verify that meat and poultry slaughter and/or processing establishment's Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Plans meet regulatory requirements.
• Execute Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Plans effectively to prevent unsanitary conditions and adulteration of product.
• Review records, observe plant operations and conduct hands-on verification to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and prepare detailed documentation (Non-Compliance Records) of non-compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Determine when regulatory control action is necessary. You will assess whether the plant's corrective or preventative actions are acceptable and effective, if there are trends in noncompliance, or if an enforcement action is warranted.
• Conduct regulatory oversight activities inside plants in matters relating to other consumer protections (e.g., economic adulteration and misbranding).
• Have contact with plant managers, owners and others to explain legal and regulatory requirements, discuss operation of the plant's SSOP, HACCP plan and other food safety programs.
• Communicate and defend determinations on non-compliance issues and discuss plans for addressing non-compliance.
• Work with a variety of individuals to resolve problems, clarify differences of interpretation concerning HACCP and other food safety or consumer protection requirements.
• Advise other Agency inspectors, supervisors and officers on inspection and enforcement matters for which you are involved.
• Conduct various samplings, surveys and tests to obtain pertinent data on potential problem areas, industry trends, or other issues of current interest to the Agency.
• Be involved in performing health and safety verification sampling and tests for detection of specific microbes (e.g., salmonella, listeria, etc.), residues or contaminants.
• Assure that products approved for import are in full compliance with all applicable federal regulations governing the importation of meat and poultry products.
• Authorize entry of all meat or poultry products considered to comply with Federal regulations or refuse entry of any products which violate any of the requirements for admission into this country.
• Coordinate with other Federal agencies (e.g., the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on such matters as animal health restrictions and refused entry lots.
