About the role

You will help to deliver an innovative neuro-oncology research project; developing a new preclinical in vivo model of NF2-null meningioma and investigating immunotherapies. The project involves using single-cell RNA-sequencing and murine models of NF2-null tumours, patient-derived xenograft drug screening and validation with a variety of wet-lab techniques. This role is advertised on a fixed-term basis for 2.5 years due to external funding.

The role will be ideally suited to an early-career researcher who is motivated to join a vibrant neuro-oncology research community at the University of Plymouth’s Brain Tumour Research centre of excellence.

Essential:

• Ph.D (or close to completion) in neuro-oncology, immunology or other closely related and relevant subject.
• Competence in a variety of laboratory techniques.
• Extensive knowledge of cancer cell biology and tumour-associated immune cells.
• Skill in protocol development and optimisation.

Desirable:

• Experience in animal research and/or UK Home Office PIL A/B + C (rodents).
• Experience in single-cell RNA-sequencing and/or other omics techniques.

Our Research:

The Parkinson lab’s neuro-oncology research focus centres around NF2-null nervous system tumours; meningioma, schwannoma and ependymoma. We have access to an excellent biobank of primary tumour cells, and use genetic and xenograft murine models to drive translational preclinical research.

This is an outstanding opportunity for you to work on an exciting project in the Division of Oral Biology within the Leeds School of Dentistry, in collaboration with Haleon and colleagues at synchrotron facilities. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will be using dual imaging and diffraction to assess the protective mechanism of action on hierarchical mineralised tissue structures in dental enamel brought about by the application of new formulations of a widely available consumer product. The project involves the use of routine laboratory imaging techniques and the dual imaging and diffraction beamline at Diamond Light Source to study and image oriented structures at multiple length-scales in hierarchically organised mineralised tissues, with and without treatment.

You will have experience working with diseased enamel affected by either caries lesions or erosive wear. Have a first degree related to dentistry or the physical sciences. You will also have experience working both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as well as a willingness to work flexibly and travel internationally and nationally to synchrotron facilities and collaborating institutes.

Prioritise own workload for the day. Inform manager if equipment levels are inappropriate for demand. Patient/ Client Care - (Factor 6) To be aware of Cardiac Arrest and undertake Basic Life Support. Recognise the needs of any vulnerable patients and discuss with clinical staff as appropriate prior to examination. To articulately describe the use of equipment to patients and ensure they are fully conversant with its application. Reassure, empathise and tactfully persuade patients, some of whom may have barriers to understanding. To check mobility of patient on ward and book as appropriate, taking into account patient needs. Perform inpatient and outpatient ECGs. Policy and Service Development Implementation - (Factor 7) Aware of and work in accordance with the policies, procedures and philosophy of the department. Financial and Physical Development (inc. equipment, stock etc) - (Factor 8) To be aware of cost savings and limit use of consumables where possible. Be responsible for maintenance of equipment, returning faulty equipment as needed including upgrades. To trial and demonstrate alternative consumables to secure best prices without reducing quality to the service. Have a good knowledge of all the hospital and department database systems (e.g., SemaHelix, Sentinel and Novacor). Understand all aspects of the hospital appointments system in order to ensure all appointments are correctly booked and information correctly logged in order the correct tariff is received.
