The Role:

The EPSRC funded project “Enhancing maritime safety: developing an accessible real-time semantic wave imaging analyser for seakeeping” is led by Dr Ya Huang at the University of Portsmouth. The aim of the project is to predict wave-vessel-payload interactions by extracting semantic wave feature in real time. This requires accurate 3D wave geometry information over time – a dynamic 4D scene. Our methodology takes advantage of computer vision, deep learning, computational mechanics and human biomechanics approaches to correlate visual wave features to hydrodynamic and biomechanical loads acting on the vessel, payload and crew.

The project team is consisted of three academics and two post doctorate researchers. The post holder will be one of the two researchers supported by the EPSRC.

Based at Portsmouth, the research fellow will be responsible for developing a) a new real-time stereo vision and data acquisition systems, b) computational mechanics algorithms for wave and vessel hydrodynamic modelling, and c) additional analysis leading to the write-up of results for the stereo vision database and fluid-vessel dynamics model.

The role holder will engage in developing, analysing, interpreting data and generating project reports, writing technical manuscripts for research journals and material for publications. The post-doctorate researcher will be responsible for liaising and coordinating with the project industrial partners and experts in the field of marine fast vessel domain and the main UK search and rescue operators.

The post holder will maintain a project website with tutorials and information for software and hardware configuration in the University domain with video content to showcase project outcomes. The university media team will support the production of web content in the middle and completion of the project.

The researcher should hold a PhD in mathematics, physics or engineering discipline with experience in either wave theory, hydrodynamics, numerical mechanics, and and/or computer vision.

This is a fixed term contract to August 2027 aligning with the project duration to ensure sufficient progress is made before outcomes can be published, and the dedicated wave stereo vision database and fluid-structure interaction codes are ready to be disseminated to the scientific communities.

Opening exists for a post-doctoral researcher position on a UKRI funded project, Holistic Optical Biomarkers For Early Differential Dementia Diagnosis (HOpE). You will join an inter-disciplinary team of computational scientists, clinical experts and molecular biologists in developing novel computational algorithms for pattern recognition with Raman spectroscopy data. Techniques to be explored include classic statistical methods including low-rank matrix and tensor factorization and more modern deep learning-based methods with quantifying uncertainty in predictions as a primary goal. The post will be based within the Vision, Learning and Control (VLC) research group in the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS), working with the investigator, Professor Mahesan Niranjan.

The University of Southampton has a high profile for research and research-led education. For an early career researcher, we offer an environment with a dynamic research culture, an opportunity to interact with a community of researchers working on advanced topics and excellent high performance computing facilities. There is much activity in the pursuit of difficult inter-disciplinary problems, particularly at the computing-health and computing-biology interfaces, of which this project is an example. The rich environment of research in this area is largely facilitated by the Institute for Life Sciences.

The VLC group in which this project is based consists of 20 academic staff and over 30 post-graduate researchers working on various algorithmic and applied topics in Machine Learning, Computer Vision and Control Systems. We maintain a vibrant research environment via a regular seminar series, weekly journal club and occasional informal discussions, and the group works more as a community of scholars than a collection of researchers. Staff in the group teach courses spanning a range of topics in modern Machine Learning: architectures, algorithms and a range of applications, and the appointee will be able to take advantage of these both by attending specific topics and by helping with teaching.

The Infectious Disease and Epidemiology Research group in the School of Clinical and Experimental Sciences wish to appoint two Research Facilitators to help support the technical aspects of research activities and to assist with the day to day running of research studies undertaken by the group. The research group is based within the Faculty of Medicine at Southampton General Hospital.

Our group is undertaking a number of projects looking at the epidemiology of respiratory pathogens. Applications are invited from those with relevant experience of laboratory based microbiology and experience of research governance. Experience of bacterial identification is desirable. These posts are full-time but consideration will be given to those who wish to work part-time. Applicants must be available to work with some flexibility.

What skills and experience we're looking for

Personal Specification:

You should be an excellent classroom practitioner and have students at the heart of your decision making. You must also have good knowledge of the Science curriculum and the recent national changes that have taken place. In May 2025, our brand new state-of-the-art Science refurbishment, costing £3.48 million will be complete! Every Science teacher will have their own teaching laboratory, and we are excited to build on the department’s excellent outcomes from August 2024: 88% of students achieved grade 4s or higher across the Triple and Combined routes including 27 grade 9s.
