• Develop and maintain Risk Approach Plans to characterize and mitigate each risk assigned to the Element and maintain awareness of crew health and performance concerns and issues associated with Artemis missions.
• Work closely with the Element Manager to ensure that scientific activities in the Element are synchronized with the Element schedule, cost, and milestones.
• Lead the discipline scientist team and collaborate with academia, industry, other government agencies and International Partners to enable integrated research activities.

• Develop cost-effective methods for controlling foodborne pathogens associated with poultry and livestock.
• Provide new information necessary to rationally design strategies to increase resistance against foodborne pathogen colonization in food producing animals.
• Enhance the safety of food supplies derived from commercially reared animals.
• Generate critical transcriptomic and kinomic data on host-pathogen interactions of Salmonella and other foodborne pathogens.
• Elucidate effective immunometabolic molecular targets for intervention in the host-pathogen network that can be exploited by commercially viable intervention strategies, techniques, and technologies.
• Characterize and define in-feed/water interventions to ameliorate foodborne infections.
• Determine molecular immunometabolic biomarkers of foodborne pathogen colonization in host animals and virulence factors in foodborne pathogens to aid in detection and intervention efforts.

• Develop the strategic research approach to reducing the risk of adverse events due to space radiation exposure.
• Identify topic areas for national research solicitations and evaluate new proposals and directed research for merit and relevance and provide relevance and feasibility recommendations to the Human Research Program Chief Scientist.
• Manage issues of conflict-of-interest, bias, and confidentiality to ensure fairness and credibility of the proposal, evaluation, selection, award, and administration of Federal awards.
• Oversee and analyze the funded research progress to understand and respond to research results having significant impact to the research approach or any of the risks and updating the approach in response.
• Work directly with the appropriate scientists and clinicians to implement the science established by the research approach and successfully close out the associated human health and performance risks.
• Work closely with NASA Medical Operations personnel to facilitate the transition of research results into clinical practice.
• As a clinical specialist, ensure the scientific components carried out by the Element are focused on mitigating operationally relevant risks and developing countermeasures, clinical guidelines and/or technologies that support exploration missions.
• Provide expertise for the integration and coordination of the radiation research and expertise with other HRP Elements, the Translational Research Institute for Space Health or with other NASA organizations as necessary.
• Coordinate national or international collaborations to identify research approaches by other US or International Agencies that should be leveraged by NASA.

• Responsible for formulating and guiding the identification, acquisition, sustainment, and deployment of test technologies, simulations, instrumentations, test support networks, test control systems for operational testing and experimentation.
• Oversees a validation, verification, and accreditation program, employing a risk-based approach to support and inform test technology requirements.
• Applies knowledge of systems engineering/ systems analysis concepts, simulation and data collection technologies, mathematics, and statistics.

• Conduct basic and applied research to improve environmental and economic resilience and crop water productivity of various irrigated and dryland cropping systems.
• Develop and refine innovative practices to manage water for sustainable agriculture production for marginally irrigated and dryland cropping systems in a region with increasingly limited availability of water for irrigation.
• Conduct supporting research to enhance the understanding of crop response to water, improve the accuracy of soil water and plant monitoring, and develop and assess water management strategies.

• Discuss edited drafts with authors to explain suggested changes in content or format.
• Tactfully explain reasons for any needed changes to authors to secure their cooperation.
• Review manuscripts to assure consistency, and understand and apply necessary copyright laws and permissions, and analyze conclusions to ensure they are consistent with the facts presented.
• Edit written material for use at national and international medical and scientific meetings in support of the broad mission of the Borden Institute.
• Determine and recommend advisability of reorganization, condensation or deletion, and rewriting to clarify confusing passages, and adjust stylistic and logical approaches, refine research methods, and select appropriate information to present.
• Ensure compliance of reprinted material with copyright law and respond to problems or inquiries relating to assigned manuscripts or policy interpretation.
• Edit entire textbooks with an average of 25 chapters on different subjects, as well as visual technical information including tables and figures.

• Participate in all phases of the research within a broad area of research requiring a systematic attack of conceptionally related studies.
• Examine how management impacts greenhouse gas emissions and plant nutrient retention as manure is deposited and accumulates on feedlot/drylot surfaces, processed and applied to soils
• Assist in other research directed at quantifying the role of manures to promote soil health, and the development of new forage systems compatible with regional natural resources and result in decreased environmental impacts.
• Explore alternative uses for manure and crop-derived products.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Carries out complex searches providing accurate and reliable information that informs clinical and management decisions, provides context for research efforts and encourages the self-directed learning of VANTHCS staff. Applies expertise to searching multiple health-related databases including, but not limited to MEDLINE, CINAHL, Psyclnfo, Cochrane Collaboration, UpToDate, as well as databases in affiliated fields such as business and the social sciences. Incumbent applies knowledge of the terminology and practices of health care disciplines, including all fields of medicine and surgery, dentistry, nursing, mental health, health administration, pharmacy and allied health fields, to accurately interpret questions and complete reliable and comprehensive searches.
• Performs critical evaluation of citations to identify those that are pertinent to a client's question. Evaluates resources and references, both primary and secondary, for authoritativeness, timeliness, and relevance to specific information requests. Ensures the accuracy and relevance of information provided.
• Applies knowledge of interlibrary loan resources and procedures for hospital libraries to facilitate interlibrary cooperation and the smooth exchange of information in order to provide VANTHCS staff access to a wide range of resources beyond those owned by VANTHCS. Coordinates the activities of a broad and varied document delivery/interlibrary loan system.
• Applies expert knowledge of DOCLINE, OCLC, health sciences databases, and bibliographic control of medical journals to locate and retrieve journal articles, monographs, and audiovisual materials required by VANTHCS staff. Reciprocates service by providing materials from VANTHCS collections requested by staff in other medical libraries.
• Incumbent evaluates the Library's collection to identify gaps in content, select authoritative resources to fill those gaps, and to proactively identify and remove outdated materials from the collection. Conducts both informal (1 on 1) and formal (face to face or web-based classes) education, teaching clients how to use electronic products, including how to effectively search databases and navigate multiple resources.
• Orients VANTHCS staff to the Library. Presents information about library resources and services to groups and committees in order to market for awareness and to encourage use of Library services.
• Assists with maintenance of the Library's Integrated Library System. Develops expert knowledge of one or more system components (ie, OPAC, cataloging, circulation, etc.) and initiates actions to ensure data integrity, smooth functioning and optimum use.

At the GS-4 level, you will:
