Job Description:
Primary Responsibilities and Duties (80%):
1. Participate in and, when necessary, supervise the reception of laboratory specimens and rejection of those that are unsuitable for analysis
2. Operate the Laboratory Information System to perform functions such as order entry, result entry, result collation & certification and result query
3. Perform all procedures in accordance with laboratory protocols
4. Ensure that “critical values” are reported to appropriate personnel
5. Resolve queries from customers
6. Report adverse incidents to the supervisor
7. Perform, record and interpret results of quality control procedures and take corrective action where indicated
8. Undertake simple preventative maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and perform simple troubleshooting in the event of malfunction
9. Comply with laboratory inventory management procedures
10. Keep current with new instrumentation, techniques and procedures by attending/participating in appropriate workshops, seminars and in-service education classes
11. Conduct of in-service education and continuing education classes
12. Assist with planning of staff rosters as required
13. Perform shift duties as required
14. Coach trainees and new staff in laboratory procedure
15. Carry out the instruction(s) of senior staff with regard to work procedures and duties
16. To conduct internal audit
17. Comply with good laboratory practice as set out by the Laboratory Accreditation Programme of the College of American Pathologists and Singapore regulatory agencies such as the Medical Audit & Accreditation Unit
18. Ensure compliance with all requirement of the Laboratory Safety Manual
19. Comply with DLM Workplace Etiquette in line with NUHS Core Values
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities (20%):
1. Assist with the evaluation of new laboratory test methodologies
2. Undertake back-up procedures in the event of emergencies such as loss of electrical power and information system crash
3. Participate in basic laboratory administrative work such as filling, processing of deliveries orders and invoices
4. Assist with drafting and updating of laboratory protocols when required
5. Participate and contribute to project teams as required
6. Cover duties of Senior Medical Technologist when required
7. Any other duties as assigned by supervisor
Requirements:
BSc or equivalent in Medical Laboratory Science
- Preferably with 1-2 years Clinical Laboratory experience and good or excellent performance
- Good laboratory skills
- Good initiative and attitude
- Good general health and no colour blindness
- Ability to multitask and prioritise workload as part of a team
- Basic computer skills and proficiency in laboratory information systems
- Proactive, with good planning and organising skills
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Service oriented and customer focused
