The Coroners Service comprises a small team dedicated to providing support to the Senior Coroner by ensuring that the legislative and case management processes, as well as the planning and handling of all aspects of the service, are conducted efficiently and effectively.
Salary: £45,441 to £48,474 per annum
Contract Type: Permanent
Working Pattern: Full-time (37 hours per week)
Location: County Hall North, Madeira Ave, Horsham RH12 1AB (Hybrid and Flexible Working) with countywide travel including Brighton and Hove.
This role offers hybrid working arrangements and will require you to work from county council office buildings and make regular visits across Horsham and Brighton, as well as the flexibility of home working as appropriate. Final arrangements to be confirmed with successful candidate.
You will need to be able to travel independently around the county, including to areas that may not be easily accessible by public transport. Pool cars and pool bikes available.
The Opportunity
We're looking for a dedicated professional to join the Coroners Service. In this role, you will be responsible for the effective management of all referrals as well as subsequent investigations and enquiries that lead to inquest hearings. Ensuring the team is supported and enabled to deliver a high-quality service to bereaved families.
Working directly with HM Senior Coroner and the Coroners Service Manager, you will be the crucial single point of contact, taking on the responsibility of representing and being accountable for the Coroners Service.
Other duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Oversee the preparation and submission of inquest files for Court, in consultation with HM Senior Coroner, West Sussex. Actively manage and allocate work to the Coroner's Officers ensuring that procedural timelines and legislation is adhered to.
- Manage a team of Coroner's Officers, delivering high quality investigations whilst maintaining a healthy and supportive environment, ensuring good performance management and development of people.
- Manage the Coroner's Office ensuring resilience is maintained and staff are fully equipped with all equipment required to conduct their role safely, efficiently and effectively.
- Act as a single point of contact to partner agencies to provide expertise
- Promoting the development of the Coroner's Service.

About You
To succeed at this role, you will have personal resilience and professionalism when dealing with potentially sensitive, confidential, or distressing queries.
We're looking for someone who can demonstrate excellent communication skills and communicate on a number of different levels and adapt their style to suit the specific needs of the customer.
You will be responsible for effectively managing your own workload as well as coordinating tasks for others, demonstrating flexibility, multitasking, and effectively prioritising various responsibilities to meet the needs of the bereaved, HM Coroners, and partner agencies.
You will have keen attention to detail, be comfortable working independently and be at ease in this fast-paced, agile environment with rapidly changing deadlines, workloads, and priorities.
