Key tasks of the Post:

You will be responsible for assisting patients and ensuring the best customer journey throughout including :- undertaking ophthalmic imaging and diagnostics including visual field, visual acuity tests and retinal scans/photographs provide support to patients in clinic who may be elderly or sight impaired. working efficiently and proactively to ensure the smooth running of clinics.

The consultants share the inpatient respiratory service duties, including consultant cover for the respiratory base ward, respiratory HDU, medical outliers, the reporting of GP X-rays and review of medical patients by consultation request from non-respiratory wards, ITU and HDU. In line with the Needs Based Care Model the consultant will also contribute to the speciality take and front door in-reach. These activities are rostered equitably among 9 consultants across the year. The department has a dedicated respiratory HDU within the main respiratory ward (ward 10). There is also a respiratory step down ward for female patients adjacent to this (ward 3). Both in-patient and out-patient services are based at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital. Currently just over 140 beds are allocated for use by General Medicine and related specialties. The appointee will work as part of the Neurology Multi-Disciplinary Team. There will be an opportunity to develop a subspecialty interest relevant to a DGH, service need and applicant’s interest and experience. The appointee will have MBBS or equivalent, a Certificate of Completion of Basic Medical Training or equivalent and 2 years’ experience in neurology at registrar level. The appointee should also have MRCP or equivalent grade.

The Neurology Department currently has 8 substantive and 2 locum consultants.

Dr Paul Watts, Clinical Director, Dr Amit Batla, Professor Anette Schrag, Dr Anna Cohen, Dr Floriana De Angelis, Dr Anna Latorre, Dr Sara Collorone, Dr Mara Sittampalam and Dr Talal Al-Mayhani. A specialist registrar from the Royal Free attends once per week on a Tuesday and sees ward referrals and holds an outpatient clinic in the afternoon. The service is also currently supported by two Senior Clinical Fellows.

The department is also staffed by three MS Specialist Nurses, a Parkinson’s Disease Specialist Nurse, and an Epilepsy Specialist Nurse. There are Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy Departments, which are well equipped. Swallowing and Language Therapy Services are supported by the Speech and Language Service and Dieticians, with assistance, as required from a Nurse Specialist in Nutrition.

The Neurology Department currently has four secretaries and an admin lead.

Over 2000 new out-patient referrals and over 1500 in-patient ward referrals are received each year. Almost all in-patient referrals are seen within 48 hours of receipt of the referral and most are seen the same day. There are currently 11 General and Specialist Consultant Out-Patient clinics per week including a monthly MS clinic, a monthly Parkinson’s Disease Clinic and a monthly Botulinum Clinic. In addition, a clinic for pregnant women with epilepsy held every 6 weeks.

The post holder would be encouraged to participate in audits / research with allocated time in their time table. The appointee would have access to all our Library facilities, and be encouraged to attend the Regional Specialist Registrar Programme Teaching Sessions. The appointee will be entitled to study leave as prescribed by the deanery. They would have an allocated Educational Supervisor for all e portfolio activities.

This post would have all the training elements of the current Specialty Registrar programme with opportunities where available to support outpatient clinics whereby they have a specialty interest. Provision of a medicines management service at ward level including responsibilities for the safe storage of medicines and medicine returns. To obtain patient medication histories, using all available sources, including patients own medicines and the Summary Care Record according to departmental processes and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) whilst obtaining patient consent. This includes a responsibility for entering patients admission medicine history onto the electronic prescribing system (ePMA). Includes counselling / demonstration of inhaler and other medical device techniques. To assist the pharmacist in delivering the Keogh standards across medical wards ensuring medicines optimisation for all patients has been undertaken within 24 hours of admission. To undertake initial pharmaceutical assessment of new patients and prioritisation of patients for pharmacist review, according to protocol. To support the supervision of a small team of junior pharmacy technicians, senior pharmacy assistants and preregistration staff within the division, organising and directing their work in a fluid manner to ensure an efficient and responsive service to patients and wards. To deputise for the Lead Medicines Management Technician within the division where appropriate. Supporting team rotas for technical ward based staff. Prioritising workload in pharmacy dispensaries.
