Job Responsibilities:

Duties for the position with Denali National Park and Preserve include but are not limited to the following:

Assists with the collection and compilation of data necessary for implementing the adaptive management component of the 2012 Denali Park Road Vehicle Management Plan (VMP). Duties include:

• Collect data using hand-held Juno GPS units while traveling in a concessioner-operated buses or a government vehicle transiting all or part of the 92-mile Denali Park Road.
• Collect data on wildlife sightings using binoculars and a range finder.
• Collect data on VMP indicators (number and type of vehicles at a wildlife stop and rest stops, amount of time hikers have been waiting to be picked up by a bus).
• Collect vehicle traffic data from monitoring locations.
• Install and maintain traffic counters, download and process data using specialized software.

At the GS-04 level: You serve as a crew member on invasive plant control and ecological restoration projects in the front country or wilderness areas. Duties include:

• Assisting in the implementation and monitoring of restoration, re-vegetation, and long-term monitoring projects for front country and wilderness restoration programs.

Positions are being recruited in both Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks including positions in the Lodgepole, Grant Grove and Cedar Grove Subdistricts.

EMTs will be assigned ambulance duty, responding as the initial provider for most EMS calls. EMTs will request assistance from other trained personnel as necessary. The park employs approximately 25 permanent rangers who have certifications ranging from EMT to Paramedic. The parks respond to roughly 350 calls annually ranging from first aid to advanced life support. EMTs respond to roughly ten fatal incidents each year. EMTs will conduct appropriate patient assessment, make a transport decision, and work within established NPS Protocols under medical control. EMTs will make base hospital contact via phone and radio patch. Patient care will be documented appropriately in the field to allow for electronic reporting after the call. EMTs will keep supplies stocked and notify their supervisor when supplies need to be ordered. Ambulances will be cleaned and organized for effective response. Equipment will be decontaminated and cleaned after every call. EMTs will plan, prepare for, and execute EMS training for local responders. EMTs may conduct other emergency services operations with appropriate certifications including Search and Rescue, structural and wildland fire, extrication, and visitor services. The parks respond to roughly 150 SAR incidents a year, with a handful of them requiring technical rescue. EMTs will be responsible to respond as directed to manage foot and vehicle traffic in congested areas. EMTs may be assigned project work during slow periods or intermittent down time.

Housing: Available rental housing units may include tent cabins, mobile homes, apartments, or traditional houses and housing/rooms will likely be shared with other employees, interns, volunteers, etc. Units may be rustic, located in wilderness areas, with few if any modern conveniences. Pets (other than service pets) and overnight guests are not allowed; units are to house assigned employees only.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks represent an extraordinary continuum of ecosystems (96% designated wilderness) arrayed along the greatest vertical relief (1,370 to 14,505 feet elevation) of any protected area in the lower 48 states. They are the highest, most rugged reaches of the Sierra Nevada Mountains (including Mount Whitney at 14,505 feet elevation) and feature the world's largest trees - Giant Sequoias. Sequoia National Park is the nation's second oldest national park (established September 25, 1890) and encompasses 404,863 acres. Kings Canyon was established on March 4, 1940, and encompasses 458,847 acres. Duties include but not limited to:

Incumbent reports to technical supervisor or Pathologist. Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis considering physiologic processes and requirements. Accepts and/or documents incoming patient specimens using the designated computer system (or backup system) as per established policies and procedures.

Controls physical conditions and responds to time factors to ensure that the physiological state of the specimen and the quality of patient care is maintained. Reports all specimen problems according to established guidelines. Verifies accuracy, completeness and validity in the testing process. In microbiology, specializes in performing gram stains, infectious disease testing, immunochemical fecal occult blood testing, vaginosis DNA testing, and complex PCR testing. Performs a variety of diagnostic tests and makes macroscopic examinations of cultures of numerous species of bacteria for the purpose of positive identification when performing pharmacy aseptic technique assessments.

In hematology, performs complex testing such as coagulation studies including prothrombin testing, activated partial thromboplastin testing, fibrinogen testing, and D-Dimer testing. Performs body fluid crystal analysis and microscopic urinalysis reviews. n chemistry (typically in the specialized chemistry unit of the section), performs blood gas testing.

Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Maintains laboratory in a clean and safe condition according to agency and accreditation requirements. Troubleshoots and repairs instrumentation. Recognizes indicators of malfunction and evaluates validity of data.

While performing a full range of biochemical tests, must have an extensive knowledge of instrumentation to install, calibrate, troubleshoot and resolve problems. Calibrates at timely and/or established intervals to minimize break downs and delay of procedures. Performs and monitors quality control. When controls fall outside acceptable limits, employee uses independent judgment, in conjunction with standard operating procedures, to evaluate the validity of data in relation to the test system and assay procedures, correlating and integrating information and perform additional testing to confirm abnormal results. Monitors specimens and the environment for acceptability.

Helps to maintain an effective liaison with biomedical engineering personnel from Healthcare Technology Management and/or manufacturer's technical service representatives to help assure optimal uninterrupted services. • Kings Canyon NP, CA Telework eligible position with supervisors approval, You may be expected to travel for this position up to 15 nights/month, Regular Drivers License required.
• Whiskeytown NRA: Whiskeytown, CA (GS-6 only) Telework eligible with supervisors approval, Government housing MAY be available, Drivers License required.
• Yosemite NP: Yosemite, Ca (GS-6,7,8) Telework eligible position with supervisors approval, You may be expected to travel for this position up to 16 nights/month, Drivers license MAY be required.

Important duties at the GS-06 level, include:

• Lead field crews to implement vegetation and ecological restoration project work.
• Controlling invasive exotic plants using a variety of herbicides as well as manual-mechanical methods.
• Assisting in the implementation and monitoring of restoration, re-vegetation, and long-term monitoring projects for front country and wilderness restoration programs.
• Using GPS to map vegetation and other features.
• Identifying vascular plants to species level using dichotomous keys.
• Leading volunteers.
• Photo documentation of projects.
• Using a variety of computer programs including Geographic Information System (GIS) software to compile, and report data and other resource management information.
• Compiling and presenting educational programs to staff, volunteers and the public.
• Assist in preparing reports, plans, and guidelines. Maintain and organize computer databases.
• Install, operate, and maintain resource management equipment. Perform equipment inventories, evaluate quality assurance compliance, order and calibrate parts and equipment/supplies.
• Provide training to others involved in resource management projects and field research.

• Assist staff in planning field research and resource monitoring programs. Schedule, coordinate and carry out a variety of field activities.
• Develop and using databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected field data using standard statistical methods.
• Provide work direction and guidance to lower graded technicians, volunteers, or YCC enrollees.
• Assist in preparing draft news releases and provide information to individuals, local organizations and schools.

• Coordinate the implementation of scientifically credible ecological restoration or vegetation projects
• Collect, maintain, summarize, and report on natural resource data in order to ensure highly credible data acquisition and reporting
• Provides advice, assistance, training to field crews, students, student conservation assistants, and volunteers involved in resource management projects and field research.
• Assist staff in planning field research and resource monitoring programs. Schedule, coordinate and carry out a variety of field activities.
