Overview of the Role: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join Dr. Becky Carlyle's lab as part of a collaborative project led by Professor Paul Harrison (Oxford Psychiatry). The project involves partnerships with Professor Carol Robinson (Oxford Chemistry), Dr. Thomas Hyde (Lieber Institute for Brain Development), and Professor Gary Stephens (Reading Pharmacology). The ideal candidate will have experience with membrane protein enrichment and preparation for mass-spectrometry analysis. A key focus will be developing assays to detect and quantify calcium channel conformations and interactomes, contributing to research on psychiatric disease mechanisms within a vibrant, international team. This is a 3-year position, available immediately.

Key Responsibilities:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join Prof Molly Stevens’s lab at the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience Discovery. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with strong expertise in organic chemistry who is also a confident self-starter, a collaborative team player, and demonstrate a proven track record of first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals.

In this role, you will develop a diagnostic platform applying the in-house developed technique SPARTA™ to the analysis of extracellular vesicles as potential disease biomarkers. The post will involve a range of nanobiomaterial characterisation techniques and the application of multivariate data analysis methods for sample classification.

This post is available from January 2025 for a fixed-term of 12 months, with the possibility of part-time appointments being considered.

Key responsibilities:
• Develop Single Particle Automated Raman Trapping Analysis (SPARTA™) as a non-invasive disease diagnostic technique based on EVs as biomarkers.
• Develop a deep understanding of EV biochemistry, Raman fingerprints and surface protein expression.
• Evaluate the performance of the technique with model systems and patient samples.
• Undertake the associated data analysis and interpretation, ensuring validity and reliability of data at all times, including either developing or liaising with others to use chemometrics, ML/AI algorithms and/or multivariate analysis.
• Manage your own research activities, including administrative tasks associated with the project.
• Actively participate in the multidisciplinary environment of the Stevens Group and collaborate with external research groups.

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to work on a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary project to develop transgenic rodent models of Parkinson’s disease. The work will support projects seeking to use rodent models of disease to understand the earliest stage of neurodegeneration at a point in which neuronal dysfunction precedes neuronal loss, offering an early therapeutic window for therapy. The post will be based in the Laboratory of Molecular Neurodegeneration in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, and is supported by the Wellcome Trust and an international consortium funded by an Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP) grant.

Duties include colony management, breeding and maintenance of lines of transgenic rodents; collection of brain tissue for gene expression analysis; general laboratory management, preparation of data for publication; contributions to wider project planning and determine the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses. You will have a good working knowledge of molecular and cellular biology, excellent practical experience of working with animal models and an interest in pre-clinical in vivo models of neurological disease. Previous experience of the management and maintenance of transgenic rodent lines would be an advantage. The ability to innovate, trouble-shoot technical problems, be meticulous in practical work and in record keeping is also essential.

Applicants must hold a BSc/MSc in a relevant area of research and will have excellent practical experience of working with animal models.

The Cragg lab alongside other groups within Oxford (Wade-Martins and Magill), London (Kittler) and Germany (Liss) are conducting a collaborative Wellcome funded research project to explore the physiological roles of Ca2+ in dopamine transmission to gain insights into the potentially toxic roles of Ca2+ in Parkinson’s disease.

This project will exploit state-of-the-art tools to understand the roles of Ca2+ influx, storage and signalling within dopamine axons in wild-type animal models of Parkinson’s. This project will compare the Ca2+ biology across striatal territories to improve our understanding of the role of Ca2+ in health and disease. Our recently published data suggests that the roles of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels are dynamically regulated across striatal territories in a manner that correlates with risk factors of Parkinson’s [REF].

In this project we will develop a better understanding of the downstream coupling of Ca2+ to mitochondrial function to better understand the selective vulnerability of a subset of DA neurons in Parkinson’s, and potentially identify druggable targets that could neuroprotective potential in the treatment of Parkinson’s. We are now seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Scientist with a strong interest in Ca2+ biology to join us as part of this exciting collaboration.

Duties include contributing to overseeing the management and genotyping of animal model colonies and parkinsonian models; adapting existing and developing new scientific techniques and experimental protocols; testing hypotheses and analysing scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate; contributing ideas for new research projects and developing ideas for generating research income.

You will have a strong background in electrophysiological and/or electrochemical and/or photometry techniques, to investigate neural circuits or synapses of the central nervous system. Applicants must hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant area of neurobiological research.

Job Description:

The Mind & Morality Lab, directed by Dr. Julia Marshall, investigates children’s social cognition. The lab is especially interested in understanding how children learn to cooperate with one another. We work with children from around age 5 up until 12 in laboratory, public, and school settings in addition to working with adults through online data collection platforms.

The Research Assistant’s responsibilities will be multi-fold. First, the Research Assistant (RA) will be responsible for coordinating and conducting research with children. This will involve managing a database of families and recruiting families to participate in laboratory studies. Second, the position will also involve reaching out to schools, coordinating school visits, and maintaining relationships with these schools. Third, the RA will help with lab-related tasks, such as administrative duties, performing statistical analyses, developing lab presentations, and recruiting and managing undergraduate research assistants.

This position will allow for independent research on the lab’s research topics under the supervision of Dr. Marshall.

This is a 100% grant funded and fixed-term position for one year with the possibility of renewal depending on the funding source.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor of Science or Arts in psychology, cognitive science, computer science, or related field is required and 1 – 2 years of related research experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A strong background in conducting statistical analyses in R and/or Python, and computer programming or web development skills are strongly preferred.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
• An ability to work independently and with a team
• Takes initiative
• Strong attention to detail and an interest in working with children.
• Very responsible, good time management skills
• Administrative experience and experience working with children is preferred 
• Must be comfortable interacting with children of all ages, with undergraduate students, and with parents and community members 
• Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

• Valid Driver’s License preferred for participant recruitment and testing
• Flexible work hours but must be able to work on some evenings and weekends.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Coordinates supply needs on a routine/scheduled basis to ensure adequate supply levels are available to meet needs. Provides administrative support for Receiving, Distribution, Central Service, Linen, Par Stock, Copy Center and Mailroom. Provides customer service with integrity, caring and excellence.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Inventories and maintains adequate supply levels. Maintains inventory control, ordering supplies and specialty equipment. Utilizes hand held devices for inventory replenishment. (40%)
• Interacts with both internal and external customers and exchanges information regarding availability of supplies, product identification and provides recommendations. (20%)
• Orders, receives supplies and stocks/delivers to assigned location. Receives supplies into database, verifies packing slips, completes required documentation. (35%)
• Responsible for maintaining department statics, including but not limited to, charging departments for stock requests, pulling and filling pick tickets, updating work and excel documents as necessary. (5%)
• Performs other duties as assigned or required including working weekends, evenings, holidays and shifts as assigned.

• Experience in materials management within a healthcare setting preferred.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Transports soiled equipment and performs decontamination and disinfection functions utilizing automated equipment and manual cleaning. (30%)

Minimum

  • Pass a nationally accredited central service exam within 18 months from hire date
  • Maintain one of the following: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) OR Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT)
