Two (2) Research Fellow posts to deliver research for the development of innovative AI algorithms for the management and optimisation of usage of healthcare system and patients’ data. The two posts are part of a collaborative project with the Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care System funded by NHS England. Skills and experience required
The successful candidate will have significant experience in Software Engineering and Databases and significant experience in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. You will have knowledge and experience in database frameworks (e.g. SQL, Tableau, Hadoop, NoSQL) and developing software projects as well as knowledge and experience in AI/ML frameworks (TensorFlow, Scikit-Learn, PyTorch, etc) and developing AI/ML projects. The ability to implement specialised innovative ideas into code (Python, R) and excellent written and oral communication, and IT skills is essential for this role.

You will be able to organise your own research activities to deadline and quality standards and be self-motivated with the ability to meet deadlines. The ability to understand complex problems requiring in-depth knowledge and the ability to collaborate with others is essential. Excellent interpersonal, and organisational skills and being flexible and adaptable to workload and team requirements as well as effective in a team setting are essential. You will also be able to demonstrate initiative and the ability to learn new skills.

Main duties and responsibilities
Applications are invited for a 36-month postdoctoral position, to lead and publish original scientific investigations in the area of galaxy formation and evolution. A focus will be on harnessing the unprecedented area, depth and statistics afforded by new observational surveys to perform some of the first statistical studies of dwarf galaxies outside the local neighbourhood.

The successful applicant will combine data from new deep-wide surveys – e.g. the Hyper Suprime-Cam surveys and the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) – with state-of-the-art cosmological hydro-dynamical simulations. You will work with Professor Sugata Kaviraj and his group. Group members have LSST data rights and hold several leadership roles within LSST, including in pipeline development. The group is heavily involved in cosmological simulations (e.g. Horizon-AGN and NewHorizon) and in developing machine-learning techniques for the analysis of large surveys.

You must also regularly contribute to a positive and productive working atmosphere within the Centre for Astrophysics Research, by contributing to the various meetings, seminars, talks and journal clubs that make CAR (and UH in general) a vibrant and dynamic place to work.

The post – one of 8 new STFC-funded postdoctoral positions awarded to CAR as a result of the STFC Astronomy Grants scheme (2023) – is available from 01 April 2024 and the successful candidate will ideally be in post as soon as possible, and no later than 01 October 2024.

The successful applicant will use theoretical, chemodynamical simulations of Milky Way-type galaxies to interpret the Galactic archaeology survey observations of the Local Group (including the Milky Way Galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy M31), as well as those of very-nearby galaxies with James Webb Space Telescope. You will work with Professor Chiaki Kobayashi and her group, who have been running cosmological and zoom-in simulations of galaxies incorporating her nucleosynthesis yields. DiRAC high performance computing facility will be available as well as the UH local cluster and data storage. The project also plans to include the effects of binary stars, in collaboration with Dr. Robert Izzard at University of Surrey, under the UK-wide network on nuclear astrophysics BRIDGCE (BRIdge the Disciplines related to the Galactic Chemical Evolution, https://www.bridgce.ac.uk).

You will also be expected to regularly contribute to a positive and productive working atmosphere within the Centre for Astrophysics Research (CAR), by contributing to institute seminars, journal clubs, group meetings, etc. that make CAR (and UH in general) a vibrant and dynamic place to work.

The post – one of 8 new STFC-funded postdoctoral positions awarded to CAR as a result of the STFC Astronomy Grants scheme (2023) – is available from 01 April 2024 and the successful candidate will ideally be in post as soon as possible, and no later than 01 October 2024.

Skill and experience required
You will have a track record of research in a relevant area of expertise in observational or theoretical astrophysics. You will also have a record of submitting/publishing scientific research in leading astronomical journals, presenting your work at scientific conferences, workshops or seminars.

You will ideally have some experience of working on hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies, spectroscopic surveys of stars, or the evolution of single and binary stars.

Qualifications required
Minimum of a first degree (or equivalent qualification), or higher qualification in a relevant discipline as well as a PhD (or equivalent qualification) or must have been approved for the award, or equivalent experience.

Main duties and responsibilities
Applications are invited for a 36-month postdoctoral research fellow position working alongside Dr. William Alston on X-ray timing studies of accreting black holes. The post will be based at the Centre for Astrophysics Research (CAR), and the associated Centre of Data Innovation Research (CoDIR) group.

The Research Fellow will execute a research program focussing on the inner regions of accreting black holes across the mass range, with a focus on timing studies using X-ray reverberation and quasi-periodic oscillations. This includes analysing data with traditional signal processing methods, as well as developing machine learning based methods to use on the observed data. The program will involve the development and extension of current theoretical models to describe the X-ray reverberation and quasi-periodic oscillations signals and subsequently model these to the available data. Recent, large observing programmes awarded to the PI and their collaboration network on facilities such as XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, NICER and Swift will be utilised.

You will be expected to lead, prepare and submit articles for publication in refereed journals, utilizing both new and archival data, as well as to regularly compete for telescope time.

You will also be expected to contribute to a positive and productive working atmosphere within the Centre for Astrophysics Research, by contributing to the execution and organisation of various meetings, seminars, journals club, organised outreach activities, etc. that make CAR (and UH in general) a vibrant and dynamic place to work.
