Audience Researcher (Sound and Vision)

About us

The National Science and Media Museum is undergoing a radical transformation ready to inspire millions of visitors to Bradford City of Culture in 2025. Huge changes will be delivered through a £6 million capital project called 'Sound and Vision', including two new galleries, a new passenger lift and improvements to the main entrance.

The new Sound and Vision galleries, accompanied by a programme of activities, will showcase key objects and stories from our world-class collections of photography, film, television, animation, videogames and sound technologies.

We are now recruiting for an Audience Researcher (Sound and Vision) to join the Audience Research and Advocacy team at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford on a fixed-term contract (until December 2025), working 35 hours per week.

About the role

As an Audience Researcher (Sound and Vision) you will conduct audience research to support the development of the Sound and Vision galleries, learning resources, programmes, events and activities. Using evidence-based findings, you will make recommendations and provide advice for relevant teams at the National Science and Media Museum, and across the Science Museum Group, about the needs, wants and expectations of the project's target audiences.

You will be working with colleagues across the Museum to engage people across Bradford with the development of Sound and Vision, feeding back evidence-based findings from your research and testing to internal teams and external contractors. You will be an advocate for audiences needs, wants and expectations to key stakeholders including the Sound and Vision project team and external contractors to support the development of the galleries.

About you

Joining us you will be an effective communicator, with good interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with members of the public. You will have an understanding of a range of audiences and their potential access requirements.

Crucially, you will understand qualitative research methods and be able to work well as part of a team, with the ability to influence colleagues' ways of thinking. You will be a good problem solver, able to work on several projects simultaneously to enable you to meet to tight deadlines.

About the role

Explainers provide live interpretation in the museum galleries for all our visitors. They also deliver a wide-ranging and creative programme of activities and events for diverse audiences including schools, families, adults and community groups. They reveal the wonder of science by telling authentic stories about our collection and facilitating and supporting the learning of children and adults.

Your role is to engage with visitors and help them learn from our exhibits and collection. You will support with and deliver all learning activities inside the Wonderlab Gallery, an interactive space that encourages and inspires our visitors to investigate with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

One of the strengths of our Explainer team is its diversity and we encourage applications from all backgrounds. Our aim at SMG is to build Science Capital in society and help people think science is for them; one of the first steps in this is for people to see individuals like them in front-facing roles like this one.

About you

First of all, you don't need to be a science expert or have any particular qualifications in STEM. We are looking for you to have experience of working in a public-facing role using good customer service and communication skills. You will also be able to deliver presentations, performances or demonstrations.

Crucially, you will have experience of working with and communicating to a broad range of people, especially children and you will have the confidence to learn to perform or present to an audience and the ability to seek and learn from feedback.

The museum temporarily closed in June 2023 to undergo a once-in-a-generation transformation with huge changes through a £6 million capital project called 'Sound and Vision', including two new permanent galleries, a new passenger lift and improvements to the main entrance, thanks to support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

To support our Operations teams in delivering a world-class welcome when we reopen, we are recruiting a full-time Duty Manager at NSMM on a permanent basis.

As Duty Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the Museum, ensuring the health and safety of all our public spaces and supporting the front facing teams to deliver a high-quality visitor experience.

Working within a team of Duty Managers, you will be jointly responsible for the line management of our Visitor Experience team.

About the role

Leading by example, you will maintain the standards fitting for a national cultural site by conducting regular walk arounds, engage with staff and visitors, and use your problem-solving skills and flexible thinking to take control of incidents as they arise throughout the day. You will champion our values, both with visitors and staff, and support our mission to ensure that the National Science and Media Museum is a welcoming and inclusive space for all.

About you

You will have good communication skills and an understanding how to motivate and develop people and teams. You will be flexible and adaptable, able to problem-solve and, with support and training, be able to deal with difficult situations as they arise. We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Science Teacher to join a vibrant secondary school in Bradford on a long-term basis, starting in November. This is an exciting opportunity to teach students across KS3 and KS4, with the potential to focus on your specialist subject within the sciences.

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or PGCE in Science or a related subject.
• Ability to teach across the Science curriculum, with expertise in either Biology, Chemistry, or Physics.
• Experience teaching in a secondary setting, with a good understanding of the National Curriculum for Science.
• A valid Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply for one).
• Strong classroom and behaviour management skills, with a passion for helping students reach their full potential.

With the reopening of the museum with its own new shop, the Museum Retail team is looking for a new Retail Team Leader. You will manage our Retail Advisors to welcome visitors and provide them with an interactive and fun experience.

About the role

In this role, you will assist the Retail Manager by leading and motivating a sales team to deliver the day-to-day operation of our Museum Stores. You will also encourage excellent customer service, maximise revenue, championing customer interactions and maintaining visual merchandising to its highest standards.

About you

You will have good communication skills and an understanding how to motivate and develop people and teams. Bringing sales skills, you will be comfortable working to, and exceeding, sales targets. Excellent visual merchandising skills will be required, along with an understanding of best practice in the retail sector.
