Research Assistant/Postdoctoral Research Associate in Translational Physiology

Lancaster Medical School is seeking to appoint a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to lead a new research grant awarded to Dr Chris Gaffney by North West Cancer Research. The grant will be in prehabilitation and colorectal cancer. Specifically, we will test whether prehabilitation can have any neuroprotective effects during chemotherapy and is a collaboration between Lancaster Medical School, Lancaster Department of Psychology, and NHS Trusts in the region.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Main duties entail:

• Leading in the construction of new knowledge of how neuroplasticity can be impacted upon by exercise and chemotherapy.
• Recruiting participants to take part in research studies
• Designing studies and leading the scientific and methodological approach
• Ensuring research practices are compliant and up to date with Open Science practices
• Data collection from participants including data management and quality assurance
• Participation in project meetings; preparation and presentation of talks, posters and reports to disseminate the results of studies
• Day-to-day lab management including opportunities to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate lab members
• Managing lab engagement activities and online media

ABOUT YOU

The successful candidate will:

• Be a motivated and organised researcher and are excited and enthusiastic about the research
• Have (or submitted) a PhD in Physiology or Neuroscience with experience of working in human testing, preferably patient cohorts
• Be an excellent project manager and be able to lead the project independently and meet deadlines
• Have excellent quantitative research skills including in programming and statistical analysis

The Division of Health Research (DHR) within Lancaster University’s Faculty of Health and Medicine is seeking to fill a Research Associate position to work on the Suicide, self-harm and people with learning disabilities: a scoping study project. The position is for 12 months, full time, starting in March 2025, or shortly thereafter. This project is funded by Three NIHR Research Schools’ Mental Health Programme. This study is a direct result of public engagement work with researchers and health professionals, and self-advocates with learning disabilities.

In this role, you will join a team of academic researchers to review existing evidence about people with learning disabilities and self-harm and suicide. The project will help to clarify what we currently know about support for people with learning disabilities who self-harm and about suicide prevention for this group. It will also review how research on suicide and self-harm in adults with learning disabilities has been done.

You will play a key role in conducting the research and disseminating its findings. You will have an MSc or PhD in Health Research or a relevant social sciences discipline with robust experience of evidence synthesis. Experience of conducting systematic and/or scoping reviews is essential. The ability to work flexibly with varied stakeholders and to manage competing priorities, and to work independently as well as collaboratively are essential. Evidenced ability to write to academic publication standards is another key requirement for this role.

In addition, it would also be advantageous to have knowledge and/or experience within the project’s relevant topic areas such as learning disabilities research and/or self-harm and suicide research. Knowledge and experience of doing research with marginalised communities and groups would also be advantageous. Proficiency in using systematic review-related software such as EndNote, Rayyan.ai, Covidence, or similar tools for reference management, study screening, and data extraction would be another advantage.

This is a collaborative research project between four universities and practice and public collaborators. The project is led by Dr Magdalena Mikulak at Lancaster University with co-investigators from University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and University of Bristol. The post will be based in the Division of Health Research at Lancaster University (Health Innovation One), but hybrid and remote working is an option. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements, including working week and days/hours worked, flexible start and finish times or condensed hours.

The Benedetto lab is looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to join a wider collaborative project, studying how the gut-brain axis mediates gut bacterium effects on host thermotolerance in ectotherms. The position is funded by the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) for 40 months. The Benedetto lab is part of the Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences at Lancaster University, UK, where we apply integrated physiology approaches to understand how animal health is achieved through the interplay of organ systems and the gut microbiota, using C. elegans as a reductive model.

The current project aims to identify conserved and metaorganism-specific gut-brain-axis (GBA) mechanisms of thermotolerance in worms, bees and fish. It combines field sampling across three countries (Iceland, France and the UK) with laboratory experiments, involving microbial culturomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, metabolic modelling, and advanced live microscopy approaches. The appointee will primarily work with C. elegans and occasionally with bees, collaborating with research associates and PhD students working on worm, bee and stickleback models in collaborating institutions in the UK, France, Germany, and the USA. The project is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary in nature, providing an excellent opportunity for an ambitious early-career scientist to establish a strong research network and carve a path to full independence.

You are required to hold a PhD in a relevant field with a publication track-record commensurate to your experience, have expertise in C. elegans or other transparent model nematode genetics and microbiology, be familiar with online databases and basic bioinformatics tools, have a keen interest in multiomics approaches and microscopy, be willing to travel abroad for sample collections (in France) and work at collaborating institutions (USA, Germany, UK) as required by the project, and be willing to undergo training and acquire any additional necessary skills. We are looking for a highly motivated, highly organised and collaborative individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience in worm gut microbiology, omics analyses, field collection and successfully managing collaborative projects will be advantageous.

The post holder will provide clinical management and operational leadership for the research practitioner workforce working across the Trust, which will include all aspects of research. The post holder will be responsible for leading the research practice, research skills, development and training of the research practitioner workforce within the Trust. The post holder will ensure the implementation of team objectives to enhance the performance and development of the research practitioner team and act as a role model for the research practitioner team. The post holder will work with the team to facilitate the Trust research aims at a local level being mindful of the effective use of resources to ensure timely set up and delivery of studies to agreed targets.

Leadership and management of a newly formed team within the Research and Development Department. This team will be made up of experienced Research Practitioners from Bands 3 to 6, working across the Trust sites, carrying out Clinical Research in a number of diverse disease areas. We are seeking a senior post-doctoral research associate to join the laboratory of Prof Mick Urbaniak in the Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences at Lancaster University, UK for a period of one year. This BBSRC funded project will investigate heat shock signalling and response in African trypanosomes using a combination of genetic and proteomic techniques.

Lancaster University has a world-class reputation as a centre for excellence in teaching and research. The Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences, within the Faculty of Health and Medicine, is a rapidly growing, innovative and vibrant Division whose research effort is directed towards understanding basic cellular and physiological mechanisms that underpin disease states. Our lab investigates how trypanosomes use post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression to respond to changes in their environment, such periods of fever within the mammalian host (see Ooi et al (2020), DOI: 10.1016/j.jprot.2020.103735). You will be joining a small, dedicated team in a well-equipped laboratory space with facilities including Biohazard Category 2 and 3 laboratories.

You are required to have a PhD in Biochemistry or a related subject, and a strong background in either trypanosome cell biology or quantitative proteomics. Experience of molecular biology, cell culture techniques, and the analysis and interpretation of data is essential. Experience of working with the African trypanosomes Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma congolense, RNA and proteomic techniques would be an advantage, although training will be given.

AI4ME brings together the BBC, Lancaster University, and the University of Surrey to design entirely new types of media experiences that can adapt to individual preferences, accessibility requirements, devices, and location.

AI4ME builds upon the rapid changes underway within the industry in how media experiences are produced and delivered, from television and films to video games. In television and broadcast media, the prevalence of Internet-based delivery supports the independent transport of different parts of a stream – including audio, video, and additional media experience components – to be composed together at the point of playback. This paradigm is enabling new forms of hyper-personalised and immersive storytelling and represents both opportunities and new challenges in the network delivery of these experiences.

At Lancaster we are building the world’s first hyper-adaptive end-to-end delivery infrastructure to deliver personalised object-based media experiences at scale. By combining novel systems-building technology with intelligent networked systems that operate across the cloud to edge continuum, our approach is capable of delivering highly personalised experiences whilst making efficient use of network compute and delivery resources.

Lancaster Physics Department and the Cockcroft Institute for Accelerator Science wish to appoint a postdoctoral research associate to work in laser- and THz-driven electron acceleration programme.

You will have experience in experimental ultrafast lasers and optics, and in electron-beam dynamics modelling. Training and expertise in areas other than your principal expertise will be available to support the post.

You will join a group of researchers from Lancaster Physics, Lancaster Engineering and Manchester Physics departments. The group operates ultrafast laser laboratories at Lancaster and Manchester Universities, and a combined laser and electron beam laboratory at Daresbury National laboratory. The THz-driven electron programme has successfully demonstrated acceleration and phase-space manipulation on CLARA 35 MeV beams, and has also established an experimental capability for THz driven interactions with 100 keV photoelectron source.

You will be based (principally) at Daresbury National Laboratory, and will provide experimental leadership in the research programmes for laser- and THz-driven MeV electron injector for particle accelerators, and in developing an ultrafast electron diffraction capability for condensed matter science. Opportunities for developing an aligned personal research activity will be available.

The post is initially for 18 months, with potential for further extension at Cockcroft Institute grant renewal in 2025.

We wish to appoint a passionate researcher to undertake advanced applied research in novel single and multibeam antennas/arrays in the W-band and sub-THz frequencies for high capacity wireless link for 6G.

This is a six month appointment with possibility of extension depending on fundings.

Your will work in close collaboration with the research group at Lancaster by using facilities at TWT Fab (http://wp.lancs.ac.uk/sub-thz-electronics/) at the School of Engineering and with national and international partners to design and realize emerging W-band and sub-THz X-haul (backhaul, midhaul and fronthaul) wireless systems using novel and state-of-the-art single, multibeam and beam scanning/switching antennas.

Experience in the use of three dimensional electromagnetic simulators (CST, HFSS), 3D mechanical CAD and knowledge of RF technology is essential.

Substantial experience in antenna measurements is required for the Senior Research Associate position.

You should hold a PhD in relevant disciplines or have industry experience preferably in the antenna sector.
