An exciting opportunity is available to join the laboratory of Dr Morgan Herod to study mechanisms of hepatitis E virus (HEV) replication, funded by the Medical Research Council. You will use a range of molecular virology approaches to study proteolytic processing of the HEV polyprotein. We recently made the exciting discovery that the polyprotein of HEV is not processed by a viral protease, thus implicating a host protease as critical in controlling viral replication. This position will build on these results and focus on identifying and characterising the role of host proteases in HEV replication, and define the role for HEV polyprotein domains in the virus lifecycle. The position provides an opportunity to conduct ground-breaking research into virus-host interactions and generate a new paradigm for RNA virus replication. To achieve this, it will exploit recently developed HEV culture and replicon systems, to conduct a functional proteomic analysis.

You will have a background in molecular biology and expertise in the study of viruses. You will join a team of researchers focusing on mechanisms of positive strand RNA virus replication and host-cell interactions. You will be organised and willing to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in atmospheric science? Do you want to further your career in one of the world’s leading climate-research groups?

You will join a team of climate and atmospheric scientists at the University of Leeds to work on two complementary projects funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and Department for Transport (DfT) research programme “Jet zero: Aviation’s non-CO2 impacts on the climate”. You will work with Dr Alex Rap, Prof Amanda Maycock and Prof Piers Forster, employing the SOCRATES radiative transfer scheme and line-by-line models to quantify the contrail radiative forcing from climate-optimised aircraft designs and alternative fuels. You will also collaborate closely with the other researchers involved in the projects at the University of Southampton, Imperial College London, and University College London, as well as with our project partners Airbus and Rolls-Royce.

The ‘Contrail Assessment of Future Aircraft and Propulsion Architectures’ project is a collaboration between research groups at the University of Southampton and the University of Leeds. The overarching aim of the project is to assess the contrail climate impact of future low-CO2 aircraft by incorporating rigorous analysis of turbulence/microphysics interactions into climate-optimised aircraft design. The ‘Contrails from SAF and H2 combustion; from lab experiments to global mitigation policy’ is a partnership between Imperial College London, University College London and the University of Leeds. The aim of the project is to assess the impact of alternative aircraft fuels (sustainable aviation fuels, SAF, and hydrogen) on contrail formation and radiative forcing and model the feedback arising from the different aviation climate impacts on future aviation policy.

You will have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in the field of Atmospheric Science (or a closely related field). You will have knowledge of atmospheric and/or climate modelling and evidence of a strong commitment to publishing scientific results at an international level. Experience of radiative transfer modelling and quantifying aviation climate impacts are desirable.

Would you like to join a multidisciplinary team working with a large UK based multi-national facility, using advanced synchrotron X-ray techniques and complimentary laboratory imaging to investigate the mechanisms of new formulations on dental hard tissue?

This is an outstanding opportunity for you to work on an exciting project in the Division of Oral Biology within the Leeds School of Dentistry, in collaboration with Haleon and colleagues at synchrotron facilities. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will be using dual imaging and diffraction to assess the protective mechanism of action on hierarchical mineralised tissue structures in dental enamel brought about by the application of new formulations of a widely available consumer product. The project involves the use of routine laboratory imaging techniques and the dual imaging and diffraction beamline at Diamond Light Source to study and image oriented structures at multiple length-scales in hierarchically organised mineralised tissues, with and without treatment.

You will have experience working with diseased enamel affected by either caries lesions or erosive wear. Have a first degree related to dentistry or the physical sciences. You will also have experience working both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as well as a willingness to work flexibly and travel internationally and nationally to synchrotron facilities and collaborating institutes.

JOB PURPOSE Deliver a high quality diagnostic genetic laboratory service through undertaking clinical technical investigations Lead a nominated technical area by providing specialist skills and knowledge with regard to diagnostic processes, equipment operation and audit. Support the training of, and supervision of staff, including Healthcare Science Practitioners and Biomedical Support Workers. JOB DIMENSIONS The Leeds Genetics Laboratory at St Jamess University Hospital provides a diagnostic laboratory service to the population of Yorkshire and Humber. Specialist diagnostic genetic services are provided at a national and international level. The service is provided by over 70 staff, consisting of Healthcare Scientists, Healthcare Science Practitioners and administrative staff. The laboratory processes over 25,000 genetics samples per year, and generates around 20,000 reports, many of which are highly complex. The post holder will undertake a variety of clinical technical investigations working with Healthcare Scientists to ensure quality and appropriateness of tests. The post holder may be asked to participate in the development of new diagnostic investigations. Acting as lead in a nominated technical area, the post holder will train technical colleagues with regard to diagnostic processes. The post holder will undertake the quality assurance tasks as required to maintain the laboratorys accreditation status. Genetic Technologists may be required to participate in the DNA technical duty rota. They will also undertake receipt of deliveries arriving into the laboratory including entering audit details into the laboratorys computerised chemical inventory system. Genetic technologists will also participate in the quarterly Regional Supplies Centre ordering rota where they will provide some of the basic consumables of the laboratory via access to a budget of around £5000 pa. The post holder may be required to help support the training of other technical staff with regard to both of the above rotational areas. There will be close day-to-day working relationship with Translational Genomics Unit, including shared use of space, equipment and other facilities. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED ESSENTIAL Degree in a Science subject, or equivalent level of knowledge. Previous experience in a laboratory environment (including training period). Knowledge of routine and more complex analytical laboratory methods, quality assurance and problem solving. Have attained the basic competencies in a range of techniques used in a molecular genetics laboratory. Analytical (technical) skills and ability to analyse situations. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Clinical, Diagnostic and Laboratory Assist Clinical Scientists with the organisation and planning of patient testing in a nominated clinical technical area including dealing with unpredictable events such as analysis for pre-natal diagnosis. Handling telephone enquiries from consultants, doctors and nurses involving patient queries and requests for test results. The post holder would be expected to judge when to pass an enquiry on to the relevant Clinical Scientist. Performing routine molecular and cytogenetic analyses. This will include the use of the following routine analytical laboratory techniques: polymerase chain reaction, fluorescent sequencing, fluorescent mutation detection methods and restriction digests. All require dexterity as they involve repetitive micropipetting of small accurately measured volumes, gel manipulation or use of automated analysers. Perform routine processing of samples in a class II microbiological safety cabinet and working to containment level 2+. Maintain a high level of accuracy and reliability in defined routine, preparative and associated procedures. The post holder is responsible for maintaining paper and computer records of diagnostic data including the entry of data in to the Patient Management system e.g. test requirements, worksheets, test results. Acting as lead Genetic Technologist in a nominated clinical technical area the post holder is expected to be able to troubleshoot specialised analytical laboratory techniques, in addition to the more routine analytical laboratory techniques. The post holder would be expected to provide training to other staff, participate in the evaluation of new/replacement equipment/reagents and may participate in the development of diagnostic techniques for a nominated clinical technical area. Ability to use laboratory computer analysis systems involved in genetic diagnosis to process laboratory data, compare results and interpret data in addition to the use of more standard software packages. Participate in the routine internal audit requirements of the laboratory including checking tube alignments for members of staff prior to tube transfers e.g. during polymerase chain reaction tests. Preparation and running of agarose/acrylamide gels. This involves regularly work with carcinogens (e.g. ethidium bromide). Assist with the preparation of diagnostic and research patient samples for dispatch to other laboratories, including retrieval from storage, safe packaging and maintenance of associated paper and computer records. Managerial The post holder would be expected to supervise staff in a nominated clinical technical area as appropriate. Acting as lead in their nominated technical area, the post holder will undertake the annual quality assurance tasks for equipment, including the maintenance of computer and paper records required for maintaining the laboratorys Clinical Pathology Accreditation status. Suggest changes to Standard Operating Procedures, generally within the laboratory and more specifically to a particular nominated clinical technical area. Teaching and Training Newly appointed Genetic Technologists would be expected to be actively working towards the successful attainment of the laboratorys core competencies and gaining the skills, knowledge and other attributes required to become a lead for a nominated clinical technical area. The duties will include preparation of materials, equipment and chemicals for lessons, mounting and displaying work, maintenance of relevant machinery and equipment, constructing science apparatus and stock control. This is a varied role and would suit someone with laboratory experience and who is looking to develop their career as a technician. Training will be provided for the right candidate. To work as part of a team of Healthcare Scientists and Assistants and/or Practitioners within the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (HMDS) based within The St James Institute of Oncology, Bexley Wing. To undertake research and development work within the department as directed by the senior scientific team. To research scientific/medical information including complex literature searches. To co-ordinate, perform and report results for clinical trial samples and liaise with the Clinical Trials Management Group, clinical trials unit staff and trial managers/co-ordinators. To perform and interpret a range of specialist tests, both routine and complex using standard operating procedures (SOPs) To plan workloads and troubleshoot problems with assays and complex equipment. Be responsible for the good order of the laboratory and its equipment, stock control and for the maintenance of any associated documentation. JOB DIMENSIONS Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (HMDS) has a committed focus to developing novel laboratory assays to improve diagnosis and monitoring of haematological malignancies and the clinical trials and associated translational research supported by the department are a key part of the work within this role. The department currently provides central laboratory services for more than 50 national clinical trials and also provides laboratory support for clinical trials offered to local patients within Clinical Haematology. Laboratory investigations are becoming increasing important in randomisation and monitoring of patients in clinical trials, with many trials now relying on results from these investigations to make therapeutic decisions. Data from the laboratory also still plays a vital role in examining trial outcome with assessment of minimal residual disease (MRD) and genomics both well established as important factors when considering trial outcomes. Clinical trials support is provided to four main academic trials units as well as many commercial trial sponsors and the number of patients in a trial can range from <10 to 2,000+. The post holder will develop technical and analytical skills to interpret and discuss laboratory results with other scientists, clinicians, consultants and clinical trial unit staff. They will work both as part of a team and independently within the discipline working closely with scientific and clinical colleagues. They will be expected to be able to plan their own workload to ensure delivery of clinical trial results and progression of research and development activities. The postholder will be required to work in a number of different sections of the laboratory in order to full fill the required research work. Specific duties will depend on the section to which the postholder is working and the type of testing being undertaken. The postholder will be personally responsible for his/her own training, subject to the supervision and direction of senior staff. 5.
