Clinical Research Fellow ST3 – Medical Oncology

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Research Fellow in Cancer Drug Development. The aim of this position is to offer comprehensive specialist training in all aspects of running early phase oncology clinical trials including protocol development, regulatory procedures, associated translational research projects and presentation of research at meetings. Support and opportunities for pursuing higher research degrees are also available.

These full-time posts are available from August 2024 and will be for a period of up to 12 months in the first instance and there is potential opportunity to extend beyond 12 months. Applicants must demonstrate as part of their application, how they meet the essential requirements of the post. In particular, applicants should have a medical degree and GMC registration. Experience in oncology and clinical research are an advantage. Fluency in English and aptitude with writing and publishing manuscripts are essential.

The NIHR UCLH Clinical Research Facility (CRF) opened in February 2009 on the Ground Floor of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing of UCH, in the heart of Bloomsbury and is now located in a purpose built location on Tottenham Court Road.

It is a partnership between University College London (UCL) and University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust. The facility is funded principally by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).

The CRF is also supported by funding from Cancer Research UK and the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC). It has a remit to progress high quality clinical research in any domain but with a specific focus on early-phase clinical trials and experimental medicine

Clinical Demonstrates autonomy as well as the ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary healthcare team in identifying and meeting the needs of the patient and his/her family during various stages of the healthcare continuum. Coordinates and monitors the care of patients on clinical trials as follows: Participates in identifying potential patients for trials. Evaluates eligibility of potential patients. Ensures all pre-study tests are undertaken and results obtained. Acts as patient advocate and assists in obtaining informed consent in the first instance and as the trial progresses/unfolds. Registers/randomises patients onto study protocols. Provides general written and verbal information to patients and families on the concept of clinical trials and detailed education regarding the objectives, scientific rationale, treatment and investigations, side effects, self-care and follow-up for specific clinical trials. Participates in decisions concerning the treatment of patients on trials in accordance with the protocol. Where appropriate provides direct patient care within the expanded role of clinical trials (e.g. advanced history taking, toxicity and response evaluation skills, administration of experimental agents, etc). Systematically documents patient information in the medical notes. Schedules follow-up appointments, consistent with protocol guidelines. Collects and prepares biological samples as per protocol. Maintains measurable standards of nursing care for specific care needs for patients on clinical trials. Communication Disseminates protocol information and research results to health care professionals by one-to-one teaching, written information and/or in-service education classes. Educates multidisciplinary team about portfolio of clinical trials. To act as a primary point of contact for patients in specific trials. Educates patient and family about clinical trials, including the objectives, scientific rationale, treatment schedule, side effects and follow up plan. Develops programs of care for patients taking part in clinical trials. Establishes and maintains links with other hospitals and GPs. Management Mentorship to data managers and clinical trial practitioners. Provides cross cover for other trial practitioners, research nurses and assistants working in the clinical trials unit as directed by the Clinical Trials Manager. If the post holder has concerns regarding standards of consent /research process in general they shall report their concerns to the Clinical Trials Manager. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Post-COVID Service at UCLH which is a nationally and internationally recognised clinical service that cares for patients with Post COVID illness.

The multidisciplinary service is led by Dr Melissa Heightman, and care is provided by several Consultants from the Respiratory, Infectious Disease, Cardiology and Neurology departments with support from physiotherapists, occupational therapists and psychologists.

The post-COVID Service is actively engaged in clinical research and clinical trials relating to Post COVID Syndrome (such as via the NIHR funded STIMULATE ICP trial).

The post is 25% research based and 75% clinical.

A Vacancy at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


This is a full-time post based at UCH to start inAugust 2024for 12 months.

The successful applicant will join the UCLH Amyloidosis clinical services with opportunities to gain specialist experience in clinical and research aspects. The post holder will develop research projects alongside specialist training and experience in the field of amyloidosis and other dysproteinaemias. The post holder will be a sub-investigator across Phase 1 to 3 clinical trials in these disease areas. The post holder will be expected to attend the MDT at the National Amyloidosis Centre (NAC) and do clinic(s) as agreed with the team.

The successful applicant will participate in the weekly Amyloidosis Clinic and Plasma Cell Disorders MDT to gain clinical experience and will receive clinical and scientific teaching from involved consultants. There is scope to interlink with the specialist laboratories at UCLH NHS FT, where relevant for the development of diagnostic/prognostic tools for these diseases.

This post is suitable for a trainee who intends to pursue an academic career in haematology and wants to explore these multisystem diseases in detail. The post also provides training in transferable skills through clinical experience gained in complex plasma cell dyscrasias.

Clinical work will be based in the Macmillan Cancer Centre, University College Hospital, the Grafton Way Building (all part of the UCLH Trust) and NAC (Royal Free London NHS Foundation trust).
• To work proactively alongside the consultants and clinical and research teams in the care of the patients in the Amyloid Services.
• To join MDT meetings at UCLH and national amyloidosis centre.
• To undertake weekly clinics for assessment and treatment of patients with amyloidosis and related conditions.
• To be an active sub-investigator on clinical trials in Amyloidosis and related conditions.
• Critically analyse clinical research literature relevant to position and attend national and international conferences to keep abreast of field.
• Develop skills in managing clinical databases and relevant statistical approaches.
• To populate a database with the Amyloidosis patient cohort.
• To be actively involved in research writing and publication, through development of clinical and research projects applied to these patient cohorts.
• Attend and participate in relevant governance activities – including multidisciplinary meetings, trial teleconferences, presentation of research at national and international meetings.
• Maintain GCP updates and skills.
