Overview of the Role: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join Dr. Becky Carlyle's lab as part of a collaborative project led by Professor Paul Harrison (Oxford Psychiatry). The project involves partnerships with Professor Carol Robinson (Oxford Chemistry), Dr. Thomas Hyde (Lieber Institute for Brain Development), and Professor Gary Stephens (Reading Pharmacology). The ideal candidate will have experience with membrane protein enrichment and preparation for mass-spectrometry analysis. A key focus will be developing assays to detect and quantify calcium channel conformations and interactomes, contributing to research on psychiatric disease mechanisms within a vibrant, international team. This is a 3-year position, available immediately.

Key Responsibilities:
Optimize cellular and molecular approaches for membrane protein enrichment
Develop and implement mass-spectrometry assays for protein analysis
Manage academic research and related administrative tasks
Refine scientific techniques and protocols, testing and analysing hypotheses
Collaborate on scientific reports, journal articles, and presentations
Operate specialist lab equipment and advise colleagues on protocols
Represent the research group at meetings and seminars

PhD/DPhil in bioscience (or near completion)

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join Prof Molly Stevens’s lab at the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience Discovery. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with strong expertise in organic chemistry who is also a confident self-starter, a collaborative team player, and demonstrate a proven track record of first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals.

In this role, you will develop a diagnostic platform applying the in-house developed technique SPARTA™ to the analysis of extracellular vesicles as potential disease biomarkers. The post will involve a range of nanobiomaterial characterisation techniques and the application of multivariate data analysis methods for sample classification.

This post is available from January 2025 for a fixed-term of 12 months, with the possibility of part-time appointments being considered.

Key responsibilities:
• Develop Single Particle Automated Raman Trapping Analysis (SPARTA™) as a non-invasive disease diagnostic technique based on EVs as biomarkers.
• Develop a deep understanding of EV biochemistry, Raman fingerprints and surface protein expression.
• Evaluate the performance of the technique with model systems and patient samples.
• Undertake the associated data analysis and interpretation, ensuring validity and reliability of data at all times, including either developing or liaising with others to use chemometrics, ML/AI algorithms and/or multivariate analysis.
• Manage your own research activities, including administrative tasks associated with the project.
• Actively participate in the multidisciplinary environment of the Stevens Group and collaborate with external research groups.

Selection criteria:
• Hold, or be near to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in materials science, chemistry, physics, nanotechnology, or related field.
• Experience in single nanoparticle analysis techniques (e.g. SPARTA, nanoflow cytometry, imaging flow cytometry, super resolution microscopy, NTA)
• Experience in extracellular vesicle harvesting techniques (e.g. cell culture, antibody conjugation)
• Experience in chemometric data analysis including multivariate analysis.
• Proven track record of first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals.
• Ability to work independently and manage your own research and administrative tasks.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team.

The project, funded by the Michael J Fox Foundation and in collaboration with Lario Therapeutics, represents an exciting opportunity to undertake translation work at the interface between academic research and pharmaceutical target and drug discovery in an exceptional setting. This work will develop new inhibitors of calcium channels as a neuroprotective strategy to protect vulnerable dopamine neurons in Parkinson’s working with induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived dopamine neurons generated from Parkinson’s patients.

Duties include growth and differentiation of iPSC lines; leading on design and implementation of experiments and cellular assays in neurobiology (eg: calcium imaging, multi-electrode array (MEA), biochemistry, immunocytochemistry, cell and molecular biology; interpretation of data; preparation of data for publication; contribute ideas for new research projects and develop ideas for generating research income; manage own academic research involving small-scale project management; supervise a Research Assistant on the project; and act as a source of information to other members of the group.

You will have excellent knowledge relating to neurodegenerative disease and practical experience in neuronal cell culture and in techniques relevant to molecular and cellular neuroscience. The ability to innovate, trouble-shoot technical problems, be meticulous in practical work and in record keeping is also essential. Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to work on a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary project to develop transgenic rodent models of Parkinson’s disease. The work will support projects seeking to use rodent models of disease to understand the earliest stage of neurodegeneration at a point in which neuronal dysfunction precedes neuronal loss, offering an early therapeutic window for therapy. The post will be based in the Laboratory of Molecular Neurodegeneration in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, and is supported by the Wellcome Trust and an international consortium funded by an Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP) grant.

Duties include colony management, breeding and maintenance of lines of transgenic rodents; collection of brain tissue for gene expression analysis; general laboratory management, preparation of data for publication; contributions to wider project planning and determine the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses. You will have a good working knowledge of molecular and cellular biology, excellent practical experience of working with animal models and an interest in pre-clinical in vivo models of neurological disease. Previous experience of the management and maintenance of transgenic rodent lines would be an advantage. The ability to innovate, trouble-shoot technical problems, be meticulous in practical work and in record keeping is also essential.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position provides coordination of investigational and research protocols. Coordinates operational aspects of research projects including project preparation, subject recruitment, protocol execution, data collection, and coordination and database entry.

CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Promotes research study initiation and review. Acts as the project representative and professional resource for coordination of staff, sponsors, research institutions, contract research organizations, regulatory agencies, and involved institutional departments. Reads and evaluates clinical research protocols. Attends departmental, committee, and sponsor meetings for the purpose of gathering new or revised information concerning existing or potential clinical research projects.

2. Ensures that the clinical research staff and/or students conduct the clinical aspects of the projects appropriately and adhere to the clinical trial schedule, which may include: maintaining, dispensing and recording drug and medical device supplies according to regulations; assisting in obtaining informed consent from project participants; assisting in the development and implementation of case report forms; instructing volunteers on protocol requirements and explaining procedures and consent forms; performing research patient registration; ensuring that clinical research staff conduct the clinical aspects of the projects appropriately and adhere to the schedule of the clinical trials; serving as an advocate for the research participant, assisting them through the research process; and/or, performing other related activities.

3. Develops and maintains regulatory and legal documents per guidelines and regulations of the research/study sponsor and the participating institution per IRB, FDA, PHA and other applicable regulatory agencies. Assists in annual reporting to Federal agencies as required.

4. Performs accurate data collection and reporting according to protocol requirements and completes applicable forms and/or other required reports in a timely manner. Facilitates and conducts site reviews with sponsors and other related agencies for the purpose of evaluating the accuracy and quality of the collected data. Develops and implements patient tracking and follow-up systems. Coordinates with participating physicians offices and staff for patient follow-up.

5. Assists in educating patients about research studies and in obtaining informed consent from project participants. Develops and maintains educational tools, educates research team members and assists staff in the conduct of the investigational therapy. Performs medical record reviews. Assists with patient recruitment, screening, diagnostics, treatment and education. Utilizes clinical knowledge and assessment skills necessary to evaluate, report and record accurate medical information, including responses to therapy.

6. Assists in the development and maintenance of budget and/or contract agreements. Follows policy requirements for reporting patient enrollment in an effort to ensure compliance with billing. Assists in the development of accounting reports and in coordination of billing systems.

7. Coordinates and safely implements research activities through interactions with research staff, internal and external investigators, study sponsors and Institutional Review Board (IRB).

8. Participates in the development of clinical research protocols. Performs accurate and timely data collection and reporting according to protocol requirements. Facilitates and conducts site reviews by sponsors and other related agencies for the purpose of monitoring the accuracy and quality of the collected data. May hire, train, conduct performance reviews, and direct the workflow for the department staff.

9. This position provides collaboration with various clinical and administrative positions, as well as research staff. Maintains primary facility assignment but may be asked to collaborate elsewhere either inside or outside of system. Conducts presentations to academic, professional and layperson organizations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 

Must possess a thorough knowledge of nursing and healthcare as normally demonstrated through the completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Requires a current Registered Nurse (R.N.) license.

Experience typically gained through two years clinical research experience or experience related to clinical area in which research study is based. Previous relevant experience working in a clinical research setting. Knowledge of medical and clinical terminology. Excellent organizational and task management skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality of patient and study information. Ability to maintain knowledge of Federal and State regulations governing practice as well as Institute policies and procedures related to medical and nursing practice. Excellent human relations, organizational and communication skills.

Ability to conduct computer-based literature searches is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s Degree or advanced certificate degrees preferred.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing research clinical conduct and data collection and entry support for oncology focused clinical research studies.  Duties include handling key operational functions for oncology research studies and abstracting relevant research related data from medical records and source documents, populating, and coordinating use of research data bases and data sources, quality review, training, report production, and submission of collected research data. 

CORE FUNCTIONS

1. Under the direction of the RN Specialist, Clinical Research Coordinator or principal investigator, coordinates research protocols including arranging necessary appointments and procedures, working collaboratively with other departments and institutions, and maintaining contact with study participants.

2. Maintains patient calendars, screening, and enrollment information utilizing departmental databases/tools to ensure compliance with protocol requirements.

3. Completes initial intake on participants for research studies. Determines participant eligibility based on study specific criteria. Verifies that patients have completed appropriate registration materials and maintains related records and information. Obtains and reviews relevant medical history with participants.

4. Accountable for completing entire informed consent process, which includes proper consent discussion & documentation according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and departmental SOPs while assuring compliance with all relevant IRB and applicable regulatory agency requirements. 

5. Collects required data by utilizing Cerner and other electronic databases, records obtained from external physician’s offices, patient interviews, and other sources. Accurately enters data into the clinical research forms through computerized databases.

6. Maintains and updates department specific databases. Develops and implements efficient data collection tools and methods. Develops and manipulates spreadsheets. Performs internal data quality reviews for accuracy and quality of data collection. Prepares, updates, and organizes tracking logs and patient research files. Identifies and communicates important protocol and data management issues or problems to leadership.

7. Submits data to appropriate agencies and maintains established quarterly reporting rates. Uses electronic data capture. Complies with federal reporting requirements. Answers requests for requested data, extracts data from assigned facility data base and generates reports as needed. Submits forms and other reports in a timely manner and maintains all source documentation. Performs data outcomes analysis, creates data reports, and works on special data management projects as assigned.

8. Facilitates monitoring and audit related activities as directed and assists in training of new staff members as directed.

9. May serve as a backup, collecting and processing phlebotomy specimens for analysis using appropriate or specified equipment. Ensures proper labeling and obtains pertinent clinical and protocol information on request forms. Performs vital signs and EKG as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must possess relevant knowledge as typically obtained by completion of an associates degree in healthcare, research, or related field and two years previous research or health care experience or equivalent knowledge/experience in a healthcare or research setting.

Knowledge of regulatory affairs and current issues concerning the conduct of clinical research or health care operations. Knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to interpret laboratory reports and understand disease processes and testing with an understanding of disease staging and status. Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to provide effective customer service. Must be proficient with common office software including web based and ability to conduct computer-based literature searches.

Summary:

The Research Assistant position will focus on assisting the laboratory with making progress toward its experimental goals. The Research Assistant will conduct research, record, analyze, interpret data, and coordinate manuscript preparation. This position is expected to work closely with the PI, graduate students, and postdocs to assist in their projects as needed. The Research Assistant will also be responsible for placing orders, lab organization, as well as coordinating IACUC protocol submission and assisting with animal colony management.

The Chellappa lab is interested in understanding the interactions between the host and microbiome in driving cellular metabolism and host phenotypes in aging and age-related diseases. The lab uses a range of techniques, including 16S sequencing, metagenomics, metabolomics, CRISPR screens, bacterial work, cell culture, and mouse models. The mission of the lab is to train next-generation scientists to conduct rigorous research and equip them with skill sets to advance their careers.

This is a fixed-term position with a current end date of 5/31/2026, which may be extended based on available funding.
