Research Assistant/Postdoctoral Research Associate in Translational Physiology

Lancaster Medical School is seeking to appoint a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to lead a new research grant awarded to Dr Chris Gaffney by North West Cancer Research. The grant will be in prehabilitation and colorectal cancer. Specifically, we will test whether prehabilitation can have any neuroprotective effects during chemotherapy and is a collaboration between Lancaster Medical School, Lancaster Department of Psychology, and NHS Trusts in the region.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Main duties entail:

• Leading in the construction of new knowledge of how neuroplasticity can be impacted upon by exercise and chemotherapy.
• Recruiting participants to take part in research studies
• Designing studies and leading the scientific and methodological approach
• Ensuring research practices are compliant and up to date with Open Science practices
• Data collection from participants including data management and quality assurance
• Participation in project meetings; preparation and presentation of talks, posters and reports to disseminate the results of studies
• Day-to-day lab management including opportunities to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate lab members
• Managing lab engagement activities and online media

ABOUT YOU

The successful candidate will:

• Be a motivated and organised researcher and are excited and enthusiastic about the research
• Have (or submitted) a PhD in Physiology or Neuroscience with experience of working in human testing, preferably patient cohorts
• Be an excellent project manager and be able to lead the project independently and meet deadlines
• Have excellent quantitative research skills including in programming and statistical analysis

The Division of Health Research (DHR) within Lancaster University’s Faculty of Health and Medicine is seeking to fill a Research Associate position to work on the Suicide, self-harm and people with learning disabilities: a scoping study project. The position is for 12 months, full time, starting in March 2025, or shortly thereafter. This project is funded by Three NIHR Research Schools’ Mental Health Programme. This study is a direct result of public engagement work with researchers and health professionals, and self-advocates with learning disabilities.

In this role, you will join a team of academic researchers to review existing evidence about people with learning disabilities and self-harm and suicide. The project will help to clarify what we currently know about support for people with learning disabilities who self-harm and about suicide prevention for this group. It will also review how research on suicide and self-harm in adults with learning disabilities has been done.

You will play a key role in conducting the research and disseminating its findings. You will have an MSc or PhD in Health Research or a relevant social sciences discipline with robust experience of evidence synthesis. Experience of conducting systematic and/or scoping reviews is essential. The ability to work flexibly with varied stakeholders and to manage competing priorities, and to work independently as well as collaboratively are essential. Evidenced ability to write to academic publication standards is another key requirement for this role.

In addition, it would also be advantageous to have knowledge and/or experience within the project’s relevant topic areas such as learning disabilities research and/or self-harm and suicide research. Knowledge and experience of doing research with marginalised communities and groups would also be advantageous. Proficiency in using systematic review-related software such as EndNote, Rayyan.ai, Covidence, or similar tools for reference management, study screening, and data extraction would be another advantage.

This is a collaborative research project between four universities and practice and public collaborators. The project is led by Dr Magdalena Mikulak at Lancaster University with co-investigators from University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and University of Bristol. The post will be based in the Division of Health Research at Lancaster University (Health Innovation One), but hybrid and remote working is an option. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements, including working week and days/hours worked, flexible start and finish times or condensed hours.

The Benedetto lab is looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to join a wider collaborative project, studying how the gut-brain axis mediates gut bacterium effects on host thermotolerance in ectotherms. The position is funded by the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) for 40 months. The Benedetto lab is part of the Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences at Lancaster University, UK, where we apply integrated physiology approaches to understand how animal health is achieved through the interplay of organ systems and the gut microbiota, using C. elegans as a reductive model.

The current project aims to identify conserved and metaorganism-specific gut-brain-axis (GBA) mechanisms of thermotolerance in worms, bees and fish. It combines field sampling across three countries (Iceland, France and the UK) with laboratory experiments, involving microbial culturomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, metabolic modelling, and advanced live microscopy approaches. The appointee will primarily work with C. elegans and occasionally with bees, collaborating with research associates and PhD students working on worm, bee and stickleback models in collaborating institutions in the UK, France, Germany, and the USA. The project is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary in nature, providing an excellent opportunity for an ambitious early-career scientist to establish a strong research network and carve a path to full independence.

You are required to hold a PhD in a relevant field with a publication track-record commensurate to your experience, have expertise in C. elegans or other transparent model nematode genetics and microbiology, be familiar with online databases and basic bioinformatics tools, have a keen interest in multiomics approaches and microscopy, be willing to travel abroad for sample collections (in France) and work at collaborating institutions (USA, Germany, UK) as required by the project, and be willing to undergo training and acquire any additional necessary skills. We are looking for a highly motivated, highly organised and collaborative individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience in worm gut microbiology, omics analyses, field collection and successfully managing collaborative projects will be advantageous.

The Role
Reporting to the Building Management System (BMS) Technician, the Electrical Controls Assistant will undertake planned and reactive maintenance and operational monitoring of the Building Management System and other installed energy control systems. This role will enable efficient and reliable energy control and maximize energy cost savings and carbon emission reductions for the University. The Electrical Controls Assistant is part of a small, dedicated team working to improve the control and consumption of energy across the University Campus.

Primary duties will include reactive and preventative maintenance of Building Management System installed controls and related engineering systems. Responsibilities include faultfinding, diagnosis and correction, system administration, control system modification and extension, liaison with end users and third party system stakeholders. The Electrical Controls Assistant will also provide absence cover for the BMS Technician as required.

The Electrical Controls Assistant will have experience of working on electrical building services and a strong interest in electrical systems controls, IT networking and computer / logic controls associated with building services engineering systems. Training and development on energy controls provided, and further training in electrical engineering may be available. The Electrical Controls Assistant will occasionally be required to work outside of normal working hours.


Major Duties

Following training and familiarisation, the successful candidate will:
• Be responsible for the reactive and preventative maintenance of the Building Management System and other energy control systems.
• Conduct daily reviews of the University’s BMS.
• Respond to breakdowns of the BMS and related systems including out of hours work where required.
• Contribute to the maintenance of BMS documentation.
• Deliver small projects related to the BMS.
• Liaise with the BMS Technician, Energy Manager, Estates Engineering and Maintenance colleagues, academics, students, staff members and other stakeholders of the BMS and other energy control systems.

These duties will be performed under the supervision of the BMS Technician, however the post-holder will be proactive and undertake numerous duties independently.


Minor duties

• Provide absence cover for the BMS Technician.
• Promote and support delivery of energy management initiatives.
• Attend project and site meetings as appropriate.
• Support project contractors on BMS installations as required.


Other duties

• To undertake any necessary training and development.
• Maintenance of confidentiality of information; it will be necessary to comply with requirements related to The Data Protection Act 2018 controls and implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance.
• At all times to carry out your responsibilities with due regard to the University’s code on Equality and Diversity, University Health and Safety Codes of Practice

In particular, we are looking for lecturers who could contribute to teaching in subject areas outside of Sociology, Psychology and Ethics/Bioethics to complement existing staff expertise. You will join a supportive team made up of clinicians and academics to deliver and take responsibility for the development and organisation of various components within the curriculum. This will include contributing to lectures, workshops and tutorials and involvement in all aspects of assessment.

We are looking for candidates whose research interests broadly align with research themes of LMS, who will join a research group aligned to their expertise. You will be supported to develop your own programme of research and will be encouraged to develop collaborative research within the Faculty of Health and Medicine and the Faculty of Social Sciences in line with our research strategy. You will also be encouraged to supervise dissertation projects and PhD students.

As the Director of Widening Participation, you will continue to develop and implement the department’s widening participation strategy to improve access to studying medicine to underrepresented groups. You will be the academic lead on the department’s outreach activities, working closely with colleagues across the university and in local NHS Trusts to deliver on and off campus events to school students. In addition, you will work closely with the Director of Admissions and the Medical School Admissions Team to assist with all aspects of recruitment and selection to the undergraduate and gateway year programmes.
