The Histopathology Department at Dorset Country Hospital is looking to recruit a well-motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our friendly team as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist. The post is permanent and full time reporting to the Head Biomedical Scientist / Histopathology Laboratory Manager.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic, motivated individuals who are committed to the provision of a high-quality service, with a background of working in a diagnostic laboratory and have specialist knowledge of Histopathology processes, ideally having completed the IBMS Specialist Diploma for Cellular Pathology.

The post holder will be involved with the delivery of routine and urgent histology, non-gynaecological cytopathology, andrology and immunohistochemistry samples through the laboratory in collaboration with other laboratory staff and department personnel.

Applications from HCPC registered individuals without an IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology may be considered for an offer of a position subject to progress towards completing the Specialist Portfolio; a Band 5 position may be offered, dependant on circumstances.

Once fully trained, the post holder would be expected to lead and be part of the Histopathology team, working as a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist within the laboratory to ensure the satisfactory delivery of the complete range of service offered by the histopathology department, in collaboration with other laboratory staff. You will be working closely with Consultant Histopathologists and laboratory staff whilst communicating regularly with other service users in the hospital.

Dorset County Hospital Foundation NHS Trust is the leading provider of healthcare in West Dorset, and the Histopathology department is fully UKAS accredited to ISO15189 (2012) and is well-equipped to provide a full diagnostic service to the acute hospital, as well as the community services in the West Dorset area. The department has a LIMS in partnership with laboratories across Dorset (One Dorset Pathology), along with a lab-wide replacement of equipment through a new managed equipment service contract for the Southern Counties Pathology (South 6) network.

You would be joining a friendly, welcoming team of approximately 25 staff who are committed to the provision of a high-quality service, working alongside Biomedical Support Workers, Associate Practitioners and Biomedical Scientists and reporting to the Histopathology Laboratory Manager.

Skills and expertise are achieved and maintained to perform duties in the Histopathology department including but not limited to:
• Specimen Dissection / Transfer
• On-Call cover for overnight breakdowns of tissue processors
• Embedding
• Microtomy & Cryotomy
• Staining of Special Stains
• Microscopic QC of H&E, Special Stains and Immunohistochemistry
• Case allocation to Consultant Pathologist
• Immunohistochemistry
• Non-Gynae Cytology slide preparation
• Andrology Analysis of Semen samples

To assist with maintaining the training and competency of departmental staff in order to support the department’s activities

Training records are updated and maintained for staff members as appropriate

To maintain the systems for error logging to standards required by UKAS and the Trust

Ensure working within technical areas is safe, of necessary standard, and cost effective

Working closely with colleagues and provide support to meet the Pathology Quality Management System, SOPs, audits, policies etc

Carry out Audits within the department as appropriate

Role and Responsibilities

What you'll need to succeed
The role is Front End leaning and that is the core experience we need, you must have 4+ years commercial experience building applications with TypeScript/React and the surrounding ecosystem. You'll also have worked with Babel, Vite and NPM.

It's a LAMP stack environment so the Back End is PHP based using Laravel Framework. The perfect candidate will have both PHP and Laravel, but they are comfortable speaking to people moving across from a different back end tech such as Node.js or Python.

We'd ideally like someone confident working with API's and in an Azure cloud environment.

In this role you'll be expected to use initiative to complete elements of the roadmap so there's creative license here, you'll also speak directly to Marketeers about projects and solve problems on the go so it's very real-time/dynamic. Those used to working with a tight structured approach in a larger corporate may not suit.

You will carry out well-being checks and respond to emerging changes in circumstances, identify and manage risk including safeguarding taking accountability for ensuring that appropriate actions are taken, and controls are in place to manage the risk. You will engage with older people and their families and support them to identify issues that are important to them and how they would like to progress them. Developing relationships with partner agencies that provide well-being opportunities, you will support customers to produce and access a programme of well-being and social initiatives, onsite and virtually, that helps support and give a voice to issues affecting older customers such as improved well-being, reduction in loneliness and dementia awareness.

You will routinely carry out health & safety, fire safety and warden call system checks ensuring both compliance and achievement of consistently high service standards, and identify and manage risk including safeguarding, taking accountability for ensuring that appropriate actions are taken and controls are in place to manage the risk.

The ideal candidate will:

Experience of working in a housing environment or recent demonstrable experience of frontline customer service.
Good general IT skills including Microsoft Office applications and a willingness and aptitude to learn our in-house systems.
Excellent record-keeping skills, ensuring that all information is clearly represented and accurately captured.
A motivated and committed self-starter with strong organisational skills, with a passion to deliver innovative services.
Ability to work collaboratively and communicate information clearly and effectively with customers, colleagues, and a wide range of contractors, external agencies etc.
Thinks practically and logically and produces high quality work, overcoming problems/issues to meet deadlines.
Delivers excellent customer service, including response and resolution of customer feedback and complaints with support from managers as required.

To assist in the planning, organisation and implementation of resuscitation training and education both within the Trust and to external organisations, in accordance with the guidelines of the Trust, the Resuscitation Council (UK) and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation. To assist in the planning, organisation and implementation of resuscitation and deteriorating patient simulation education programmes using high and low fidelity simulators and other relevant equipment. The post holder will work with a wide range of staff both internally and externally in accordance with the guidelines of the Trust. To work as a member of the cardiac arrest team providing specialist clinical advice, including specific advice on and interpretation of complex documentation and procedures on clinical and related professional issues. To attend cardiac arrests/emergency situations, involving adults, paediatrics and trauma patients both leading and operating as a team member as required. To participate in research and audit in relation to Resuscitation. To participate in trials and evaluations of resuscitation equipment across the Trust.
