The Cardiology Team at UHS are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join an existing cohort of 12 SHO level doctors in order to deliver safe and effective care to cardiac patients within the Trust. The post is offered initially for 12 months and would suit a doctor aiming to complete an ‘FY3’ year or a more senior trainee looking for further experience in Cardiology to strengthen their CV.

This post provides a fantastic opportunity to experience both district hospital cardiology (serving the local Southampton population of 600,000) and tertiary centre cardiology (serving the Wessex Region of 3.5M). Successful candidates will be exposed to all aspects of cardiology and will have the opportunity to see many different clinical conditions. Junior doctors in the department rotate through all sub-speciality teams, including the regional ACHD service and the heart failure service, which has recently been awarded ‘Team of the Year’ by the patient charity Pumping Marvellous. It is, thus, an ideal post for those individuals wishing to take MRCP or those looking for further experience of cardiology prior to embarking on specialist training. Many previous applicants have found this a useful part of general practitioner training. The broad exposure to acute cardiology and also management of common conditions such as hypertension and angina have helped many others in their subsequent careers in primary care.

The department is a high-volume cardiothoracic centre performing upwards of 1200 cardiac cases and 800-900 thoracic cases per year, delivering some of the best outcomes in the UK. The unit has a strong ethos of training and research, with projects frequently leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals and international presentations. The successful candidate will work with 12 other senior house officers (including 3 FY2 doctors). The rota is based on a 1:13 on call shift pattern. There are 20 registrars supporting the SHO level doctors as well as advanced nurse practitioners on the wards and surgical care practitioners in theatres.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

This position provides training opportunities in the care for cardiothoracic surgical patients in the pre- and post-operative setting. The fellow will work at a senior house officer (FY2 – CT2) level and will have days allocated to cardiac and thoracic wards, cardiac high dependency unit and theatre. In theatre, there is opportunity to act as a first assistant in cardiac and thoracic cases, perform basic thoracic procedures and parts of cardiac procedures and progress to improve surgical skills and experience. There are many opportunities to perform ward-based procedures (such as arterial line and chest drain insertion) and undertake audit or research leading to presentations and publications. Full supervision and training will be provided for the involvement of the successful candidate in theatre (no previous operative surgical experience is necessary). Advice and support is available for candidates who are considering a career in surgery. Fellows with an interest in cardiothoracic surgery may have the opportunity to be trained to progress to a registrar position.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Applicants must have full GMC registration with license to practice. Other qualifications, MRCS part A or B or equivalent and previous experience in cardiology or cardiothoracic surgery would be desirable.

Routine ward-based skills such as peripheral venepuncture and IV cannulation, urinary catheter insertion, basic ECG interpretation and recognition of the deteriorating patient, history-taking and examination. This is a full time permanent position based at our customers distribution centre in Southampton

• Rate of pay: £22,912 per annum
• Weekly hours: 37.5 hours plus daily 30-min unpaid break
• Shift Patterns: 5 days out of 7 - Shifts between 06:00-14:00, 14:00-22:00 & 22:00-06:00 +0.50p per hour night bonus
• Working Environment - Mixed

A day in the life of a Warehouse Operative

As a Warehouse Operative, you will work as part of a dynamic and supportive team in what can be described as a fast-paced and target driven environment to ensure the stock entering or leaving the depot is accurate.

Our activities vary, so often, you may be required to work across multiple different workstreams such as Goods Inbound checks, Picker Accuracy audits and Load Adherence checks most of which require periods of manual handling.

Job activities

• Audit the Inbound accuracy of supplier deliveries on the GFR program.
• Audit Picker accuracy of stock destined for stores and fully investigate all errors found.
• Adhere to agreed audit and error verification procedures at all times.
• Maintain integrity at all times.
• Ensure the expected productivity levels are achieved, in line with customer expectations.
• Review daily targets in line with customer expectations.

WHAT YOULL DO Working in clinical research you will join an enthusiastic, driven and caring research team, to help provide support to embedded research teams across the trust and within our dedicated NIHR clinical research facility, for new and existing studies. Our team participates in research within many different specialities across the trust and in the community ie in colleges, universities and patients homes. There are always opportunities to gain knowledge and experience within a number of these specialities. WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR Enthusiasm, self-motivation, flexibility and drive will be required to ensure the success of this post. Clinical research experience is not essential for the role, full research training will be given; we have an excellent induction and ongoing education programme. You will be involved in all aspects of the research process from study start-up, recruitment and delivery, to study close. Team-working skills, flexibility and drive will be required to ensure the success of this post. You will need to have an excellent level of written and verbal communication skills. Good IT skills are essential. You will work in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, implementing studies to translate scientific discoveries into improved patient outcomes.
