Join us as a Behavioural Risk & Applied Empirical Science Audit Manager

• In this key role, you’ll be focussing on driving the adoption of empirical scientific research methods within the NatWest Behavioural Risk team and wider Internal Audit sector

What you’ll do

As a Behavioural Risk & Applied Empirical Science Audit Manager, you’ll collaborate with audit experts to understand critical business assurance and sustainability questions. You’ll work closely with a diverse group of talented and accomplished behavioural and data scientists, identifying opportunities for innovation, gathering resources and owning implementation.

You’ll also:

• Guide more junior colleagues in designing feasible research approaches, as well as in executing and interpreting insights
• Develop and manage effective stakeholder relationships and act as first point of contact when leading reviews
• Stay on top of latest applied empirical science methods and applications, as well as analysis and workflow management technology
• Stay at the forefront of empirical social science behavioural insight, sharing knowledge where possible

The skills you’ll need:

We’re looking for someone with extensive relevant technical and research leadership experience. You’ll hold an academic degree in a social science discipline, with a strong quantitative analysis element, or you’ll have a proven equivalent track record.

You’ll also have experience in empirical social science design and execution, covering statistics, causal inference and data science. Knowledge of large-scale business data handling such as databases and SQL would be beneficial, as would an understanding of retail banking, financial markets and code development and quality assurance practices such as Git, GitLab and GitHub.

In addition to this, we’re looking for:

• Enterprise level coding experience including object-oriented programming, ideally using Python
• Experience in drawing conclusions from different primary and secondary data sources
• Clear, concise and compelling communication skills to inspire others, maintain momentum and ensure work completion
• Experience role-modelling, supporting and supervising through coaching, feedback and development

What you'll do

As a Behavioural Risk Audit Manager, you’ll lead, or deliver part of, an audit engagement or behavioural risk innovation project, using your behavioural and data science skills and knowledge, with limited oversight. We’ll look to you to design new robust and feasible approaches to effectively identify and understand behavioural risk, particularly around good customer outcomes.

Your role will also involve:

• Contributing to innovative business insights to identify risks
• Identifying new opportunities and delivering new, or optimising existing research methods, to better identify and understand behavioural risk
• Building relationships with, and identifying new opportunities to work with academics on behavioural risk topics, managing engagements where relevant
• Making sure that audit tools and associated documentation is maintained to high quality through reviews
• Overseeing and coaching other team members where required
• Developing and managing effective stakeholder relationships and being the first point of contact when leading a review

The skills you'll need

To succeed in this role, you’ll need a relevant qualification in behavioural science with a strong quantitative element such as psychology, economics, finance, data science, or similar. You’ll also need strong experience designing, conducting, and analysing quantitative research methods such as quasi-experimental methods, surveys, lab, or field experiments.

You’ll demonstrate an in-depth understanding of behavioural science theory, particularly around consumer judgement and decision making or household finance. As well as this, we’ll expect an understanding of behavioural risk application in a risk, regulatory, financial services or consultancy context.

You’ll also need:

• The ability to source, prepare, and access data for analysis
• An understanding and experience of developing and testing hypotheses, and drawing inferences from primary research or large data sets
• Proficiency in Python or another coding language and the drive to further develop those skills
• Experience in drawing conclusions from different primary and secondary data sources
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Experience supporting, coaching, and developing a team

What you’ll do

Day-to-day, you’ll be leading your audit team as they deliver audit engagements on time and to budget while undertaking key aspects of assurance fieldwork and supporting assurance planning.

We’ll look to you to leverage internal audit methodology and tools. You’ll also make sure that our global methodology is fully compliant and accurate. That way the audit management tool is up-to-date. You’ll also build on our internal audit position and influence our evolution of control.

Your other responsibilities will include:

• Supporting the delivery of a flexible and risk-based audit plan that addresses regulatory requirements and provides independent assurance and impactful opinions
• Supervising the audit engagement team while supporting them through coaching to help them realise their potential
• Assuring regular audit engagements by supporting assurance planning to make sure key risks are covered while collaborating with internal audit teams in line with regulatory requirements
• Undertaking key aspects of assurance fieldwork while taking responsibility for work across the team so it’s delivered on time and provides reliable evidence to support issues and opinions
• Managing key stakeholders throughout audit engagements to understand business risks and to make sure effective discussion is undertaken about key risks

The skills you’ll need

To be successful in this role, you’ll be an established internal auditor or risk manager. We’ll expect you to understand risk management principles through a meticulously investigative approach. You’ll also have good written and verbal communication and stakeholder management skills.

You’ll be able to successfully lead a team in delivering projects while adhering to budget, schedule and quality. You’ll also support your team by identifying talent, coaching and feedback.

You’ll also need:

• Excellent knowledge of IT general controls
• Outstanding subject matter expertise and experience of technology risk management in infrastructure or cyber security
• Great knowledge of technology service operation either as an IT auditor or an IT practitioner
