The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position. As an Accounting Technician you will:

• Review routine, complex and unusual documents to verify accounting data, mathematical accuracy.
• Perform account reconciliations; processes, certifies, records and reports receipts and expenditures accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with governing regulations.
• Determine and initiates necessary accounting transactions, enter data into an automated accounting system, compare accounting transactions to source documents and correct invalid or erroneous entries.
• Perform research of current transactions, historical data, source documents, etc., to identify significant changes and determine related transactions and causes, to take and or coordinate corrective actions as needed.

Major duties include but not limited to:

• Assigns appropriate numerical and symbolic codes to obligate and to record data from documents into the general ledger accounts, obligation accounts, control points, cost centers and subaccounts.
• Performs a monthly review of the undelivered orders, accounts payable, accounts receivable, federal advance, suspense accounts.
• Responsible for posting each day's non-MCCF checks and electronic payments received.
• Ensures invoices are received and receiving reports processed.
• Works with Agent Cashier to update the cash account.
• Processes all deposits.
• Other duties as assigned

• Leads the team in identifying existing data resources, coordinating research areas and reviewing relevant legislation, regulations, SSA policies and other internal and external reports to accomplish project objectives.
• Develops comprehensive plans to accomplish complex and sensitive projects in accordance with applicable standards, policies, and procedures.
• Distributes and balances workload among the team members in accordance with work flow, skill level or job specialization, making adjustments in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely completion of assigned tasks.
• Trains or arranges for the training of team members as needed.
• Analyzes information gathered to evaluate compliance with program regulations, policies and procedures, to evaluate accomplishment of program goals and to assess the economy and efficiency of operations.
• Formulates findings by identifying the cause(s) of conditions and developing recommendations to address them.
• Prepares written reports, memos and other documents to summarize the results of reviews and to present recommendations. Develops special reports as projects progress when significant issues are identified that require immediate corrective action.
• Liaisons with SSA staff on program and operational issues and negotiates to gain acceptance of findings and the recommendations presented where differing points of view may be strongly held.
• Leads the team in identifying problem areas and researching and analyzing information that results in new project proposals which have a significant impact on SSA’s operations and/or save Agency funds in its programs and operations.
• Reviews completed work and written products to ensure that instructions, priorities, deadlines, and quality standards are met. Identifies work products that do not meet established standards, referring unusual situations to the Division Director.
