The Sheriff Appeal Court (Civil), based at Parliament House in Edinburgh have an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to join the team as an Administrative Officer on a fixed term contract for an initial period of 6 months with the possibility of extension thereafter.

The Sheriff Appeal Court (SAC) Civil commenced in 2016, as part of the Scottish Civil Courts Reforms. The SAC (Civil) team is based in Parliament House, Edinburgh. The Court hears appeals against decisions from the sheriff courts.

Administrative Officers carry out a variety of general administrative duties to progress cases through the court or provide support to other functions within the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service.

The Key Responsibilities

To undertake a number of general administrative duties including:

To support the Clerk of Court and Assistant Clerk in efficiently processing the work of the Sheriff Appeal Court;

To establish effective communications and working relationships with the members of the Sheriff Appeal Court bench, legal practitioners and colleagues;

To process and distribute incoming mail which comprises of parts of appeal processes and other documents;

To assist in the processing of the daily business of the SAC (Civil), including, but not limited to:
*dealing with enquiries at the public counter, via mail, telephone and email;
*liaising with the procedural Appeal Sheriff;
*processing all aspects of civil applications received by the Sheriff Appeal Court, including stated case appeals;
*accounting for fees where appropriate;
*transmission of papers to the SAC bench and Court Clerk; and
maintaining the Sheriff Appeal Court Register

I am currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Secretary to join my clients team. The chosen candidate will be tasked with delivering thorough secretarial assistance to enhance the smooth operation of the business.

Your tasks will include:

Administrative Officers carry out a variety of general administrative duties to progress cases through the court or provide support to other functions within the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service.

The Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland (MHTS) was created on 5 October 2005 by virtue of section 21 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 ("the 2003 Act"). The Tribunal's headquarters are located in Hamilton and it also has staff who work throughout Scotland. The Tribunal discharges its functions through panels of three members: a legal member (who acts as Convener), a medical member and a general member. The judicial arm of the Tribunal is supported in its functions by the staff of the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service (SCTS).The primary role of the Tribunal is to consider and determine applications for compulsory treatment orders (CTOs) under the 2003 Act and to operate in an appellate role to consider appeals against compulsory measures made under the 2003 Act. The Tribunal also plays a monitoring role by periodic review of compulsory measures.

The advertised posts provide an excellent opportunity for the successful applicant to be involved in a vibrant and busy working environment with the prospect of developing their own learning through frequent contact with our judicial partners.


The key responsibilities:

Attend Tribunal venues (Hospital and Community based) to facilitate MHTS hearings acting as a facilitator for on the day administrative functions in line with set processes, maintaining regular contact with HQ.

Complete Risk Assessments at Tribunal venues dealing with any minor and immediate issues at the hearing and reporting any concerns to your Team Leader immediately.

Complete necessary hearings documentation within set timescales.
Travel throughout Scotland to facilitate hearings, which may occasionally involve working extended hours.

Making use of mobile IT equipment. This will be your responsibility to ensure this is secure at all times.

Collate all relevant case information, liaising with external stakeholders and the President’s Office as necessary.

Embrace multi functioning initiative across SCTS.

Work closely with our Continuous Improvement Team to maximise efficiencies within SCTS.

Complete mandatory E-Learning as required.

General administration tasks as required.

We offer 3 different modes of tribunal hearings – teleconference, in-person and WebEx. Clerks are expected to facilitate hearings via one of these methods. This will require travelling throughout Scotland to various venues.

The above lists will vary in some tribunals. The job holder may be required to undertake such duties as may reasonably be requested within the scope of the post.

Candidates who have been shortlisted at this stage will be invited to complete an online assessment. A link to the assessment will be sent by 13 August 2024, with the assessment requiring completion by 23:59 on 15 August 2024.

Following on from this, candidates who have passed the assessment will have their applications forwarded to the recruiting panel for review. Following this, successful candidates will then be invited to interview.

Interviews will be held week commencing 26 August 2024.
