The Opportunity:

This Research Associate position will contribute to the Centre for Electronic Frontiers (CEF) within the Institute for Integrated Micro and Nano Systems at the University of Edinburgh, which is funded by EPSRC and in collaboration with colleagues at Imperial College London and University of Manchester.



This position is also affiliated with a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies held by Regius Chair of Engineering Prof Prodromakis, Director of CEF. The appointee will support the delivery of the vision of this 10-year programme that aspires developing Embedded AI Hardware solutions for Lifelong Learning applications.



This post will involve the development of integrated circuits (IC) for a wide range of embedded AI hardware applications such as AI accelerators, autonomous sensors, biomedical implants, robotic systems, adiabatic computing, and hardware security modules, etc. It will also involve validating and demonstrating the performance of the developed ICs in solving real-world problems.



This role is UE07 and is available on a fixed term basis initially for up to 24 months.

Your skills and attributes for success:

A PhD in Electronics, or an undergraduate/master degree plus industrial experiences as a senior IC designer.
Proven track record of research or industrial experience in analogue and mixed-signal IC design.
Experienced with EDA design flows; has one or more successful IC tape-outs and is experienced with IC testing.
Capable of working collaboratively with researchers from different disciplines or technical background, able to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
Capable of working independently, exercising a high degree of initiative and demonstrating a pro-active and flexible approach to work.

SALARY: £86,964 - £102,310 per annum

HOURS: Full Time - 35 hours per week

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Architecture and Software Development

• Strong Software Architecture background and experience of agile development practices with a history of technical leadership

• Experience across the entire software development life cycle from inception, through build to production

• Active involvement in architecture and design governance

• Experience of risk, infrastructure, resilience and security architecture practices and concerns

System Design

• You understand and acknowledge the impact of system design decisions on scalability, resilience, and supportability

• Experience of API design and architecture patterns, messaging technologies (Kafka, MQ)

• Experience of building applications through containerised microservice architectures, with a working-to-strong understanding of cloud methodologies

Payments Domain knowledge

• Knowledge of Payments System Architecture such as Account Posting, ISO20022 messaging, Faster Payments, CHAPS and SWIFT.

MAJOR TASKS/JOB ACTIVITIES

• To empty litter and recycling bins.

St Augustine’s is a Catholic secondary school of approximately 960 students situated in the west of the City of Edinburgh. Its catchment area encompasses five Catholic primary schools extending from South Queensferry in the north to Balerno in the south. However, as a result of parental choice, our current S1 contains students drawn from 31 primaries

St Augustine’s stresses the importance of high levels of achievement for every student and there is a strong sense of community within the school. The post is full time in a busy Craft & Design department. Emphasis is on getting the best possible outcome for each of our students so resilience and creativity are welcome qualities for applicants. A range of abilities from Nat3 to Advanced Higher.

Your Responsibilities:
An ability to coordinate with other disciplines and liaise effectively with clients and suppliers.
Responsible for running projects independently.
Preparing conceptual, schematic, and detailed design of water and wastewater infrastructure assets including treatment works, pumping stations, sewers, and pumping mains.
Preparation of Appraisal Reports and Business Cases.
Supervision Senior Engineers, Project Engineers, Graduate Engineers and Technicians.
Preparing contract documentation for construction projects.
Leading design team meetings and client liaison meetings as appropriate.
Supporting large schemes and leading small schemes within the technical design team and providing technical guidance to our water and wastewater project teams.
Developing, with training and support, your technical skills towards becoming an industry expert
Ensuring efficient project delivery, and supporting our project managers.
Operating in accordance with corporate and regulatory health and safety, environment, and quality standards.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:
Previous experience in wastewater or water infrastructure design or project management
Strong technical design experience on multi-disciplinary projects
Infrastructure civil engineering including infrastructure developments; drainage and site layout and multi-disciplinary design leadership
Good communication skills and ability to engage with all members of the project team
You should demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team sharing knowledge and best practice
Good understanding of the CDM requirements
Proactive and keen to take ownership of client relationships and contribute to the growth of our business
Good motivation, influencing, and people management skills so that you can lead a team and provide support for developing engineers whilst continuing to develop your career.
Qualifications:
Preferably degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a relevant technical subject. Postgraduate qualifications are an advantage.
Chartered or working towards chartership

What you'll do

As an Enterprise Architect, you’ll be defining and communicating the current, resultant and target state architecture for your assigned scope. You’ll be making sure that the architecture links to, and is informed by, our overall strategy and architecture, and produces the architecture outcomes.

We’ll look to you strongly influence the development of business strategies at an organisational level, identifying transformational opportunities for our businesses and technology areas associated with both new and existing technologies.

As well as this, you’ll be:

• Translating architecture roadmaps into packages of work that allow frequent incremental delivery of value to be included in product backlog

The skills you'll need

To succeed in this role, you’ll need expert knowledge of application architecture, and at least one business, data or infrastructure architecture with an in-depth knowledge of the remaining disciplines. You’ll have excellent communication skills and storytelling ability with the ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to colleagues, up to senior leadership level, ensuring wider stakeholder buy in for the strategies being delivered. Along with a good understanding of Agile methodologies, you also have experience of working in an Agile team.

As well as this, you'll need experience of enterprise architecture in a large regulated financial institution and experience of assessing and defining options to modernise the core of a large enterprise or major financial institution.

You’ll also demonstrate:

• The ability to lead and drive the architectural design for a major core banking transformation journey and experience of defining roadmaps
• Experience of developing, syndicating and communicating architectures, designs and proposals for action
• An understanding of industry architecture frameworks, such as TOGAF and ArchiMate
• Experience of working with business solution vendors, technology vendors and products within the market
• A background in systems development change life cycles, best practices and approaches aligned to knowledge of hardware, software, application and systems engineering
• The ability to balance strategic and interim designs, providing pragmatic solution designs
