Experienced (senior) legal counsel with expertise in engineering, construction, EPCM, fit-out and similar Capex procurement projects, demonstrating strategic value and competence in applying legal skills. A key contributor in ensuring that Lonza's projects in these specialized areas are conducted compliantly, efficiently, and with a focus on risk management. The incumbent has deep knowledge of engineering and construction law, including Swiss SIA norms. Familiarity with large project contracts, such as FIDIC, is instrumental.
Key responsibilities:
- Key contact to Engineering and Capital Sourcing functions for all legal matters.
- Contract Review and Negotiation: Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of engineering and construction-related contracts, including engineering, design & build and EPCM agreements, subcontracts, joint venture agreements, and procurement contracts.
- Compliance and Regulatory Affairs: Ensure that the company complies with all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards related to engineering and construction projects. Stay updated on changes in relevant laws and regulations.
- Risk Management: Identify and assess potential legal risks associated with engineering and construction projects. Develop strategies to mitigate risks and ensure project success.
- Dispute Resolution: Handle dispute resolution matters related to construction projects, including claims, disputes, and litigation. Work closely with external counsel retained for such disputes when necessary.
- Project Support: Collaborate with project teams to provide legal advice and support throughout the project lifecycle. Address legal issues that may arise during project execution.
- Bonds and Insurance: Oversee bonding requirements for construction projects, ensuring compliance and adequate coverage. Support on insurance coverage requirements and issues in cooperation with the Head of Insurance.
- Training and Education: Provide training and guidance to internal stakeholders, primarily SGIE and Capital Sourcing, on legal and compliance matters related to engineering and construction projects.
- Regulatory Approvals: If necessary, assist in obtaining necessary permits and approvals for construction projects.
- Other Tasks: Perform other duties as assigned.
Key requirements:
- Master degree in the field of Law (MLaw) or equivalent; LLM and/or doctorate (Dr./PhD) welcome
- English & German Business fluent. Other EU languages such as French, Spanish etc. is advantageous
- Admittance to practice law in Switzerland or EU preferred
- Several number of years of experience in Private practice or in-house legal counsel specializing in engineering, construction, EPCM (Engineering Procurement Construction Management) and/or FIDIC projects
- Ability to act independently and as part of a team
- Ability to provide solution-oriented, practical guidance in working with business management
- High degree of professional ethics, integrity and social responsibility
- Ability to anticipate legal issues or risks
- Demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the critical success factors needed to differentiate and translates corporate strategy into critical success factors through implementation of legal concepts that make Lonza more competitive
- Acts as a key communication link between operational layers and upper management
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, outside counsel, business partners and collaborators
- Excellent analytical skills
