About the role:

As a quantity surveying graduate joining SSEN Transmission, you will follow a specialist pathway. Specialists will work with experts in their specialism, gaining exposure within a business area for the duration of their graduate programme, with the aim of providing experience that will lead to a substantive post.

Working as part of our multi-disciplined Procurement and Commercial team, we have the opportunity for a recent or upcoming graduate to join our graduate programme and gain the knowledge and experience needed to work towards a Junior Contract Manager role.

Our Procurement and Commercial team are responsible for helping the business to procure services and materials in a timely and cost-effective way. We work across the SSE Group, ensuring our businesses get the best possible service and value from our supplier network, as well as ensuring all service providers are compliant and continue to meet contractual obligations and business need. You will have learning opportunities across various types of projects to develop your procurement and commercial management skills.

You will be supported in your role with a placement plan, regular meetings with your line manager and networking with key business leaders through quarterly placement reviews. Your placements may include but are not limited to the following teams; Finance, Regulation, Development, Assurance with experience in our engineering and operations teams to give you the knowledge to develop into a Junior Contract Manager role.

What do I need?

Youll have a minimum of a 2:2 in a relevant Quantity Surveying / Construction in the Built Environment degree.

We'd love you to have some practical work experience that reflects your passion for the energy sector, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team. You'll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges and should have a genuine interest in SSEN Transmission and the prospect of a long term future with us.

What is the role?

Our Trainee Site Construction Management programme lasts for three years and combines work-based learning experience and formal training and workshops, including an SVQ in Construction Site Management.

This programme will develop your knowledge and experience to become a Site Manager. Whilst on the programme you will organise work on our project sites, making sure all tasks are completed safely, on time, and within budget. You will liaise with contractors, surveyors and builders to ensure a project is on track and ensure there are enough staff, machinery, and materials to complete the job.

You will gain real hands-on experience, build an invaluable network, and develop a unique set of skills which will shape your career. Due to our size and diversity, we can offer you a structured yet challenging development programme where you will have the support of the Learning and Development team and a business mentor to assist you in reaching your full potential. You will be assigned a Site Construction Manager (SCM) that will help manage your day-to-day activities on site, ensuring that you get the breadth of knowledge and experience to help you complete your training.

The programme will support your career development into a Site Construction Manager position taking responsibility for your own site. SSEN Transmission projects typically appoint a full-time site representative or Site Construction Manager onto each major site. They play a pivotal role in the team and act as a full-time on-site link between our contractors and the rest of the SSEN Transmission project team, including the project manager. They also play an integral link with our operations team. Projects are typically construction of new, or modification to existing transmission voltage (132kV and above) assets including substations, overhead lines, and underground cables. This can include major civil works and buildings.

What do I need? 

To be considered for this role, we would love you to:

- Have some previous experience working on an active construction site in any capacity, or alternatively have studied HNC Construction Management. Please note, we are unable to accept applications from those that have already completed, or are working towards achieving, a Masters degree.

- Be highly organised and self-driven with the ability to manage your time well.

- Be flexible in your approach to work to maximise your chances of success, and you should be happy working alone or as part of a team.

- Be comfortable to spend some time living away from home whilst on different learning placements across SSE.

- You will need to hold a full UK Driver's Licence, or be in the process of learning to drive, as there will be a requirement to travel to a number of our project sites.

SSEN Transmission has an opportunity for a Site Construction Manager. The role is required on a major project in the Western Isles where we are designing and building a 132kV Trident wood pole line from Harris to Stornoway to replace the existing overhead line.

The key duties & responsibilities will be:

- Represent the SSEN Transmission business on-site and be the key site-based point of contact, this will also include interfacing with contractors, and key stakeholders on site.

- Ensure the project is executed in accordance with relevant requirements, particularly relating to statutory and legal obligations, Health and Safety, Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, Quality & technical compliance, personnel and industrial relations.

- Work closely with the appointed contractor(s) and the operations team to ensure the works are delivered to the project programme, in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

- Ensure site activities comply with planning consents and SHE legislation, and routine reports and KPIs are submitted to the Project Manager.

- Develop effective relationships with contractors, suppliers and the community, acting as a leader on site and champion for a positive safety culture.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- Previous on-site experience working on the construction, maintenance and commissioning of 132kV overhead lines.

- Working knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation and CDM 2015 Regulations - ideally within a high voltage electricity construction environment.

- Experience working with multiple contractors/sub contractors in a site-based environment to drive construction activities to time and budget.

- Previous on-site supervisory or management experience for large construction projects and an understanding of quality requirements and experience in monitoring inspection and test plans.

SSEN Transmission has an opportunity for a Site Construction Manager. The role is required on a major project in the Western Isles where we are designing and building a 132kV Trident wood pole line from Harris to Stornoway to replace the existing overhead line.

The key duties & responsibilities will be:

- Represent the SSEN Transmission business on-site and be the key site-based point of contact, this will also include interfacing with contractors, and key stakeholders at site.

- Ensure the project is executed in accordance with relevant requirements, particularly relating to statutory and legal obligations, Health and Safety, Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, Quality & technical compliance, personnel and industrial relations.

- Work closely with the appointed contractor(s) and the operations team to ensure the works are delivered to the project programme, in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

- Ensure site activities comply with planning consents and SHE legislation, and routine reports and KPIs are submitted to the Project Manager.

- Develop effective relationships with contractors, suppliers and the community, acting as a leader on site and champion for a positive safety culture.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- Previous on-site experience working on the construction, maintenance and commissioning of 132kV overhead lines.

- Working knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation and CDM 2015 Regulations - ideally within a High Voltage electricity construction environment.

- Experience working with multiple Contractors/Sub Contractors in a site-based environment to drive construction activities to time and budget.

- Previous on-site supervisory or management experience for large construction projects and an understanding of quality requirements and experience in monitoring inspection and test plans.

- Strong communication skills with the ability to challenge others along with experience in resolving conflicts and planning site activities.

Please note, a full current driving licence is essential due to the requirement to travel to and be on site.
