About the role

We have a permanent, full-time opportunity for an Estate Assistant to join our Estates team working 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, from 08:00am to 4:00pm. You will be responsible for providing high quality grounds and garden services to our schemes based in and around Southend.

Reporting into the Estates Services Officer you will be responsible for providing high quality general maintenance services to our schemes. We are looking for someone who has good customer service skills as you will be interacting with our customers and colleagues. The work can sometimes be quite physically demanding. Job Purpose

To assist the Commercial Manager and the wider commercial team in providing professional quantity surveying support to the Capital Programme and Procurement Delivery across several long-term contracts.

To manage commercial matters for those contracts and projects with regards to contract set-up, management, pricing, service delivery, scope change and dispute resolution to ensure contract requirements are compliant with standards and co-ordinated to maximise profit delivery.

• To be commercial lead, or for larger projects to provide support, on a portfolio of client construction projects.
• To comply with all UKPN guidelines, our goals and procedures, and to identify and report areas of non-conformance to the Regional Commercial Manager and wider commercial management team.

Qualifications:

• Quantity surveying experience and a track record in managing complex, high value and varied contracts from a quantity surveying perspective.
• Degree qualified in quantity surveying or other relevant business discipline
• Non degree holders may be considered if they have a record of success with experience in similar roles.
• Professional qualification or membership of the RICS, CIOB, ICES or other relevant Chartered Institute would be an additional advantage.

Colas are recruiting and have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor in the Essex/Hertfordshire area to effectively carry out quantity surveying duties as directed by the Commercial Manager/Senior Quantity Surveyor/Quantity Surveyor as appropriate, ensuring that projects are managed effectively in line with Colas’ governance, policies, and procedures.

As well as either having or working towards an appreciation and knowledge of the activities listed below, the Assistant Quantity Surveyor should look to apply their knowledge and learning in their day-to-day duties. The Assistant Quantity Surveyor will assist the Commercial Team and other members of the project team in the following activities.

Assist and support the financial and commercial processes, commercial management and contract administration, familiar with standard forms of contract such as NEC, FIDIC and JCT, assist with the use of planning and programmes, assist with cost planning and pre-contract cost control, project/commercial management reporting, assist with recording works progress and assessing the effects of delay, prolongation and disruption, assist with the interpretation and development of bills of quantities, schedules of rates and activity Schedules.

The perfect candidate will need to demonstrate they have the drive and ambition to fulfil the roles responsibilities, be motivated, eager to progress their career and carry out their duties in a safe and efficient manner, an excellent communicator, client focused with good commercial awareness and commitment to business success. You will have good time management/attitude to change, ability to plan and prioritise your own workload working under pressure to meet deadlines.

You will also have:

• 1 - 2 year’s previous experience in quantity surveying or similar commercial role in highways or infrastructure sectors.
• A valid driving licence as there will be a need to travel across sites.
• A-levels or BTEC Extended Diploma; and GCSEs – English and Maths grade C/4.
• Be qualified or working towards or prepared to work towards a HND or Degree in Quantity Surveying (or other commercially related discipline).
• Working towards or prepared to work towards professional membership of an appropriate organisation (for example, RICS/CIOB/ ICES).
• Excellent knowledge of standard forms of construction contracts notably NEC.
• Have excellent numeric and computer literacy skills and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Holds an appropriate Construction Skills Certification Scheme card or prepared to obtain one.
