The Supervisory, Medical Support Assistant in Community Care is aligned under the direct supervision of the Deputy Chief, Community Care. The primary duties of the Supervisory Medical Support Assistant (SMSA) may include but are not limited to:
- Plans and directs administrative and technical duties in support of referral management
- Assigns and evaluates work of subordinate staff
- Resolves complex problems so that patient services are met
- Evaluates new products, equipment, and systems and makes recommendations
- Identifies educational and training needs
- Makes final decisions on staffing selections
- Evaluates performance and takes disciplinary actions
- Plans and directs activities for support staff
- Extracts and analyzes data for reports
- Schedules appointments, consults, and tests
- Ensures transfer or medical records from and to the VAMC and other facilities
- Tracks patient's appointment status in the community
- Reviews VSSC or other reports to validate consult tracking
- Makes follow-up calls on a daily basis
- Verifies and updates demographics and insurance information
- Researches Optum database to assist Veterans with finding medical care in the community
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm To be discussed at interview

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66
. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Telework: Available This position may be authorized for ADHOC telework. ADHOC telework eligibility will be discussed with the hiring manager after completion of trainings and competency evaluation no later than 90 days after employment.
