How You Will Contribute:
We are looking for an experienced Senior Director, Learning and Development, to join our team. If you’re someone who possesses the ability to devise long-term, overarching strategies, manage day-to-day operations to ensure the successful implementation of these strategies, and embodies that unique blend of foresight and attention to detail that enables you to see the bigger picture while also focusing on the smaller, integral parts, you’re likely an ideal fit for this role.
Reporting to the Vice-President, People Success, you will have global accountability for executing on Ciena's learning & development strategy and programs for 9,000 employees in the Americas, EMEA, APJ and India. You will leverage your experience and functional expertise, and through partnerships with senior level management, learning professionals and People & Culture Business Partners, drive a learning culture aligned to business priorities. Together with a team of skilled functional Learning Business Partners, you will be responsible for equipping Ciena employees with the knowledge and skills to unlock their potential.
- You will lead a team of 5 global Learning & Development professionals, providing day to day guidance and ensuring continued upskilling of the Learning & Development team members.
- Understand Ciena’s growth and business strategies. Work with senior leaders to translate what this means for functional learning priorities.
- Responsible for creating and driving the Ciena skills strategy, that is both aligned to Ciena’s strategic workforce plan and functional learning needs. Accountable for leading skills transformation projects such as WD Talent Market place. Lead project team and change management efforts
- Establish relationships with senior business stakeholders to understand their priorities, identify skills and capabilities needed to strengthen the organization, and prepare us for the future. Translate insights into a structured approach to developing functional learning strategies that span a timeframe of 1-3 years. Partner with the wider P&C organiation to ensuring learning priorities are aligned to functional people strategies.
- Bring innovation to the development of functional learning curriculum. Build creative and highly engaging learning strategies that address leadership, management and employee development
- Lead the team of Learning Partners to create functional curriculum that aligns to a 70/20/10 learning models, is innovative and delivers a great employee experience.
- Responsible for the ongoing technical training requirements of Ciena’s Products and Services organizations, including needs identification, development of learning material. Partner with functional L&D leaders and enablement teams where they exist to create and deliver learning strategies.
- Source technical, product-related, and professional solutions for multiple levels in the organisation
- Collect frequent feedback, and check for alignment ensuring that the learning team is constantly responding to and delivering high value learning content.
- Propose, agree and implement enterprise wide learning measures for success that demonstrate tangible impact of learning.

The Must Haves:
- A proven track record as a Learning & Development Leader preferably as a Director, Senior Director or AVP in a large, global organization.
- Knowledge of applicable learning and development practices from future-focused needs identification to measuring the ROI of learning initiatives.
- Work history in the telecommunications or software industries.
- Proven experience with innovative learning methodologies and their successful deployment/usage.
- People leadership, coaching and mentoring experience.
- Curios and commercially-oriented. Takes time to understand Ciena growth ambitions and performance. Actively looks to establish relationships with senior business leaders.
Assets:
- Degree in engineering, computer science, or a related discipline.
