Investigation Learning Lead

What you will be doing

In this dynamic role, you will take the lead in managing and coordinating investigations on the HPC Project from start to finish. This includes initiating investigations, gathering evidence, analysing findings, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions to ensure lessons learned are embedded to prevent future occurrences. You will own the Investigation Review Meeting, providing essential support to the committee, while also empowering trained investigators across the project to complete investigations promptly. Your responsibilities will extend to overseeing the governance processes for accepting recommendations from all investigation levels and managing a dedicated team to handle the supporting administration, including utilising the Project’s electronic learning tool. Additional responsibilities include:


- Review and enhance the Project’s investigation processes to identify areas for improvement.
- Provide expert advice on applying investigation processes, using best practices to elevate output quality.
- Lead incident and investigation matters, fostering the development of trained investigators from NNB and Contract Partners through the Investigator’s Community of Best Practice.
- Deliver tailored training for investigators and Sponsoring Managers to ensure their success.
- Manage the most complex cases, driving them forward in line with challenging KPIs and performance standards.
- Analyse investigation outcomes to identify risks, assessing whether proposed actions are adequate to prevent reoccurrence.
- Produce high-quality analysis and documentation, setting a standard for less experienced investigators.
- Conduct trending analyses of investigation causes, alerting relevant areas to trends requiring further improvement.
- Engage stakeholders to ensure effective communication of lessons learned internally and externally, monitoring success.
- Provide specialised feedback on Effectiveness Reviews following investigations and corrective actions.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for you to join us as our next Learning & Improvement Lead where you’ll play a critical role in ensuring the HPC Project fulfils its commitment to effective self-regulation, maintaining compliance with Nuclear Site Licence (LC7) requirements by recording and learning from site incidents. It plays a pivotal part in enhancing both conventional and nuclear safety throughout the project's lifecycle, while also sharing valuable insights with the broader EPR Programme.

In this role, you will manage a team of Internal Learning Coordinators and take charge of overseeing the daily management of all Observations & Incidents reported into the Project Reporting Tool. You will ensure the Internal Learning Screening Meeting runs smoothly, with corrective actions identified and driven to completion. You’ll also be responsible for creating, adapting, and managing Key Performance Indicators to assess the overall health of the organisational learning framework, while making proactive recommendations for process improvements.

What you will be doing

In this role, you will be responsible for developing and delivering targeted training and briefings to ensure all site personnel have a solid understanding of reporting culture and learning systems. You’ll work closely with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring effective knowledge transfer and collaboration, while driving continuous improvement in inspection modules, learning processes, and corrective action management. Additionally, you will lead communication campaigns to promote learning initiatives across the project and keep systems updated with site standards and HS&E regulations. Additional responsibilities include:


- Lead on-site visits to engage with workers, gather feedback, and drive improvements in partnership with Communications, HSE, Quality, and Security teams.
- Ensure the Site Reporting System is efficiently used, providing input for system updates and improvements.
- Act as the liaison between Site and Client Safety & Env Teams to validate and maintain accurate reporting data, ensuring correct accident classifications and alignment with project indicators.
- Evaluate learning opportunities, balancing safety, quality, time, and cost for appropriate responses.
- Oversee Quality Check strategy, using feedback to drive improvements in user performance.
- Lead the strategy for the Inspections Module, working with teams to refine checklist content and ensure data output is used effectively in relevant forums.
- Monitor trends, creating reports and taking proactive action when adverse trends emerge.
- Manage the Internal Request for Learning Process, ensuring timely, high-quality responses.
- Actively gather feedback through various methods, leading User Groups to capture improvement ideas and drive changes.
- Represent the L&I Manager in project meetings and forums as needed.
- Chair Internal Screening Meetings and cover for External Learning and Investigation Review Meetings when required.


Who you are

To succeed in this role, we’re looking for you to bring a proven ability to influence and drive the adoption of new processes within a regulated environment, paired with strong analytical and critical thinking skills. You’ll thrive in fast-paced, delivery-oriented settings, have a solid understanding of engineering projects, and bring expertise in health, safety, and environmental practices within construction. Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and confidence in presenting are essential, along with familiarity with high-hazard industries and a strong grasp of statistical analysis and KPI interpretation. Additional requirements for this role include:


- Degree in a relevant subject matter (or equivalent education) would be advantagious
- Extensive experience in creating KPIs, metrics, and data analysis in heavily regulated industries (Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Rail, etc.).
- Trained in Root Cause Investigation, with hands-on experience leading or supporting investigations.
- Internal ISO 45001 Auditor qualification is a plus.
- Proven ability to conduct field inspections using tools like i-auditor.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) with additional knowledge in reporting systems like PowerBi or Business Objects.
- Experience in promoting and applying error reduction techniques.
- NEBOSH General Certificate, NVQ Level 6, or NEBOSH Diploma in Health & Safety preferred (or working towards).

As a Training Instructor, you will be employed within EDF’s Nuclear Skills Alliance (NSA), a collaboration between Nuclear Operations and Nuclear New Build (NNB), providing technical skills and knowledge for various phases of the nuclear lifecycle. You do not need nuclear experience, but strong experience instructing within a complex environment would be beneficial. Think you’re ready to step into the nuclear industry, then apply today!
As well as the technical training required for your role you will also receive training to become a Fleet Certified Instructor (FCI), so while prior experience in training may be beneficial it is by no means essential.

Hinkley Point C: Reporting into the Eng & Tech Training Group Head, the Training Instructor will be responsible for delivering key engineering and scientific fundamentals training to people across the business.As well as delivering the training, they will ensure that the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) is applied by regularly evaluating the effectiveness of training courses, acting on trainee feedback and ensuring training materials are kept up to date, ensuring technical accuracy and quality and exploring opportunities to make the training as engaging and rewarding for trainees as possible. They will also be responsible for taking ownership of Training Requests, as well as representing the team in training committee meetings.

What you’ll be doing…

Reporting to either the Maintenance and Skills Training Group Head or the Engineering and Technical Training Group Head will be based at either Hinkley Point C or Gloucester Business Park. A hybrid working arrangement will be supported. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:


- Undertaking Fleet Certified Instructor (FCI) training within 2 years.
- Developing and delivering Maintenance and Engineering Training related training material.
- Delivering training in classroom and plant simulator environments, as well as providing coaching and mentoring of trainees to expedite learning.
- Acting as course coordinator for responsible training areas.
- Leading and delivering training to groups from 1 up to 20 people, depending on the subject and environment.
- Acting as the subject matter expert for your area and demonstrating a deep understanding of the relevant company standards, becoming the company expert and representative in your areas.
- Ensuring company values, safety and OpEx are embedded throughout the training, training material and lesson plans.
- Communicating with line managers for the successful development of competence within your staff.
- Maintaining relationships with both Nuclear Operations and EPR stakeholders and Subject Matter Experts for development of material.
- Communicating with external contractors if required, to provide training support services.
- Fully contributing to the business plan of the NSA and NNB in support of achievement of our company organisational goals.


Who you are…

A relevant training qualification would be needed for this. You will have experience in deploying effective training methodologies (Systematic Approach to Training). Along with experience in training, learning and continual improvement processes. Do you have experience of promoting training across a large, complex major project organisation. Are you able to lead training projects and have knowledge of external training standards and procedures.

An understanding and experience of modern learning methods, as well as experience in utilising technology for training delivery. You will have the ability to multi-task and juggle different priorities, working well independently with the capability to influence.

In addition, we are looking for someone who:

- Has a thirst for learning and able to get to grips with fundamental Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.
