About the Role
Teaching Personnel is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to join a fantastic school in Torquay that specialises in supporting students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and challenging behaviour. The school's primary goal is to reintegrate students back into mainstream education through personalised support and care.

This full-time role is term-time only, offering a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in young people's lives. You will be working closely with teachers and other support staff to create a safe, supportive, and structured learning environment, helping students develop the skills they need for success both inside and outside the classroom.

Key Responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for students with SEMH and behavioural needs
- Implement tailored learning and behaviour plans under the guidance of the class teacher and SENCO
- Build positive relationships with students to promote emotional well-being and social development
- Assist in the planning and delivery of engaging lessons and activities
- Support the reintegration process of students into mainstream education
- Promote and model positive behaviour strategies to de-escalate challenging situations

Requirements:
- Experience working with children with SEMH and behavioural needs (in a school or similar setting)
- Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with students
- A genuine passion for helping students overcome barriers to learning
- Understanding of safeguarding procedures and commitment to student welfare

Desirable:
- Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent experience
- Team Teach or similar de-escalation training (or a willingness to undertake training)

1:1 Learning Support Assistant Level 2
Salary Grade C (Points 5 - 7)
Temporary to 31st August 2025 in the first instance, dependant on funding
£23,500 - £24,294 (£12.18 - £12.59 per hour) pro rata
1130 hours per annum

GTS is looking to appoint a Level 2 Learning Support Assistant to work one to one with an identified pupil, to start as soon as possible.
The ability to communicate clearly, adaptability to meet a wide variety of situations, a sense of humour and a genuine desire to support and motivate young people in their learning, and an interest in supporting the social, emotional, and mental health needs of young people, are all essential for this post. A good all-round education and proficiency in literacy, numeracy and ICT are desirable.Principle Duties
To work with an identified pupil across the mainstream learning environment. To implement agreed work programmes in line with their needs to support in and out of the classroom. To work alongside all staff in preparing appropriate learning opportunities resources for the identified pupil

Undertaking evaluation and record keeping

What skills and experience we're looking for

We are seeking to appoint two enthusiastic and hardworking Learning Support Assistants/ Mentors who can build positive working relationships with our students and support them to make great progress. Our Learning Mentors work to support students who have a range of special educational needs both in class and through small group intervention.

Our provision for students with SEND has been transformed over recent years. These posts have come about because of the promotion of some of our existing team and because we want to grow our team so that we can provide even more support. We are ambitious for all students, particularly those with SEND. Earlier this year our SEND Team moved into our new purpose built accommodation. This new accommodation reflects our ambition to provide the best possible education and learning environment for all students so that they can live life to the full both now and in the future.

What the school offers its staff

We have an outstanding SEND Team who go above and beyond to meet the needs of students who need something ‘additional and different’ in school. Learning Mentors will work as part of this hardworking and dedicated team. In our recent building project we have transformed the provision for SEND students in our school. There are specialist facilities to support students with a wide range of SEND needs and we have significantly improved the accessibility for students with disabilities.

The team are currently trained to deliver a number of interventions outside of the classroom covering all four broad areas of need including literacy and numeracy, as well as, ELSA, Drawing and talking, Social Group therapy and active listening for active learning. We have built our provision and expertise over the last 4 years and are continually looking for ways to develop this further.

The team currently is made up of; The Assistant Headteacher (SENDCo), Deputy SENDCo, HLTA (EEA assessor), SEMH Champions and 10 learning mentors. These are additional Learning Mentor roles to work with our current Learning Mentors.
